Gameplay wise DMC is better.
Presentation wise GOW is better.
My personal pick is probably DMC.

DMC - a real action game

GOW is a casual buttonmasher with stupid enemies and a great story

Even though God of War is overrated, I'll choose it over Devil May Cry.

God of War. I've never understood the draw of DMC, I think it's a horribly slow action game with really limited combat options and stupid enemies, then they just put in irritating boss fights to make it seem hard... God of War might be easy, and it may seem like a button masher but it's a hell of a lot of fun, and Chains of Olympus for PSP is one of the best handheld games ever because just going on and killing loads of enemies for 10 minutes is pretty much perfectly suited to a handheld, but you can play it like a proper full game as well and play through the awesome story mode.

There hasn't been a BAD God Of War game, there HAS been a bad Devil May Cry. Simple enough then, though the better DMC's really have a case, GOW is just more interesting to me.

dmc for those who prefer crazy combos. gow for those who prefer epic story along with enjoyable gameplay. For me, GoW of course.

IMO DMC has been getting steadily worse (with a few moments of bliss) GOW improved in its sequel but i guess thats the problem DMC has got 5 games, GOW has got 2 (released), i know it won't happen but it should be compared when GOW is at 5 games, (though saying that DMC2 was rubbish imo)

I have played both, DMC and GOW, and i have to say that i like much more DMC, but to be honest is not about gameplay or presentation, because they are equally great, i choose DMC because of the overall plot (demons and stuff) and of course because of Dante, is so cheese over the top super inmortal cool guy, is so likeable.

DMC is leauges better. God of War is merely a pretty button masher. DMC is a challenging arcade game that rewards skill and strategy.

I prefer DMC for having a deeper combat(its a tie between this and NG).. Its mostly offense, but it's about sty-le. Which usually increases difficulty as the AI gets more aggressive the better you are doing. The boss fights are usually a blast, and i love the characters overall(storylines are usually stupid, but hey its typical Capcom Camp and its fun) God of War is a good polished gameoverall. BUT I HATE kratos with a passion. It isn't possible for a character to be any less badass than he is, and still be called a badass.

On Dante Must Die in DMC4, if you don't kill all the enemies and bosses after two minutes, they Devil Trigger and get twice as hard. Its sick.

To be frank, I like them both equally. God of War has an unsurpassed cinematic presentation with a serious tone in its rich story, attractive mythological artstyle, and refined gameplay that makes button-mashers look good. DMC has an over-the-top presentation aspect that is both cool and cheezy, and never takes itself too seriously. The gameplay is fast-paced, adrenalized, fluid and defines the hack&slash genre. So yep, I like both, A LOT. GoW has a superior story and presentation, and DMC an incredibly-satisfying combat system and coolness factor.

yeah but the puzzles are way better in GOW. Also, the bosses are funner. And there are various action sequences that are added in that change up the gameplay and make it fresh and fun. Not to mention the presentation is top notch.

Also, GOW is a button masher, but if you get really good at it, it's really awesome look at this vid: here

God of War beats DMC in every avenue. Just kills it.

Better story, more versatile gameplay, less annoying character.

I always felt that DMC had better platforming, but the game was so repetitive and stupid that it didn't mean much for the overall product.

GoW, anyday. I tried DMC 1, matter of fact, i owned it. I just found it really irritating, and this is from someone who loved the Onimusha series, and every NG game except for the 2d versions and i'm yet to play NG2.

in Combat? HELL NO. DMC hands God of War its ass in that department. Sure the God of War game design is better with addition of puzzles, and less repetition. That said if we are talking just pure combat for gameplay. DMC spanks God of War.

But you can't get a good rating in DMC by button mashing. There is no rating system in GoW at all. That's the point, you can easily as button mash in GoW as you can not. Its not the same as DMC, you actually have to vary your moves and keep things fresh to get more orbs and a good rating.

Then you are playing the game for all the wrong reasons. DMC is arcade styIe, like all the cIassic console action games of the old days. Having a rating system increases replay value. Hell, I've beaten GoW twice (one of those times was to catch up for GoWII) and GoWII once. I've played DMC3 three times through, am almost finished DMC and have almost finished DMC4 twice. I'm becoming a huge DMC fan and will be going back and trying my hand at the higher difficulties because the rating system gives me the ability to improve with each passing mission (I just got two A ranks on the first two missions). Hell, I'm playing DMC3 on Son of Sparda (Hard) as I post this... and just rocked the first boss, hard.

I'm gonna have to disagree with this. I prefer DMC as well but the replay value for me revolves more around beating all difficulty modes rather than the score per mission. Also IIRC hard mode on DMC3 isn't called son of sparda, that's 4 no?
