  • Dynamic 4K/30 fps target
  • Lowest resolution of 3264X2160p(85% of native 4K) was recorded
  • Sticks to native 4K most of the time
  • Draw distance is improved, combining the higher XBO mid range LOD plus distance LOD of PS4 Pro
  • Improved God Rays close to or matching highest PC settings
  • Some hitches when were observed when loading during roaming but not often enough to be a problem
  • Frame rates are not as stable as PS4 Pro
  • Roaming in CPU bound areas drops on both consoles, though it should be improved on X
  • Might need another patch to iron things out

I beat it on my PS4 but tempted to pick it up on Xbox, However after beating Fallout 3 again, I still prefer that game over FO4.

I also haven't played Fallout: New Vegas, which people claim is better than these 2.


Glad most of the FPS issues are gone, I remember a quest that took me to a factory and the FPS on my PS4 was godawful, felt like it dropped to 15-20 fps range.

@Zero_epyon: Such a terribly optimized game on any platform lol.

I don’t like the god rays effect at all either, so I have to turn it off every time I launch the game, because that one graphics option doesnt save.

The 85% native 4K sounds impressive, looking forward to trying it later...yes I know big landscapes with not much, but I love the setting in the Fallout games and mostly 4K is more than enough imo to get a good upgrade from the base version, I remember it looked pretty good to me on the base XOne anyways.

@Alucard_Prime: It looks like it basically runs native 4K the majority of the time and only drops to 85% in the most extreme stress cases.. I'm sure its gonna look good in either case tho

I really think we need to stop pretending "PC" is some static quantity in the same sense as a console.. Maybe list the specs you're referring to?..

This also goes for DF.. When they reference the "PC version" they should list all the applicable specs..

This is such a terribly optimized game.

Even running on a GTX 1080ti with an I5 6600K clocked at 4.7 i get drops to 45 in the cities, its insane.

GTX970 producing superior results to Xbox X....... But....but....but....teh....GTX1070.

GTX970 = Native 4k at all times, Xbox-X = Dynamic resolution and can drop to 85% of native 4k

Prior to AMD Bulldozer, PowerPC has FMA math advantage. Intel Haswell delivered FMA math features hence removing PowerPC's advantage.

Prior to Intel Core 2, Pentium III/IV has 64bit SIMD hardware while PowerPC G4 has full 128 bit Altivec SIMD hardware. AMD K8 Athlon 64 has 128bit FADD and 64 FMUL SIMD hardware hence not fully 128bit SIMD hardware, but delivered respectable math IPC when compared PowerPC G4/G5. Intel Core 2 delivered full 128bit SIMD hardware for X86 CPU market.

My point, PC CPU hasn't been advance with math features.

With start of 1st gen Intel Core i7, FMA advantage is nearly useless when PowerPC's memory write latency is inferior Intel's low memory write latency (the killer feature to drive the GPU at the highest fps).

My concern with PowerPCs has been NB/MCH quality.

Intel's SIMD extension run away with AVX-512 bit wide extension (for SkyLake X) leaving the competition for dead.. AVX-512 also has 32 register model just like PowerPC's 32 register model.

X86's smaller register model has a workaround with "register window" tricks. A lot of hardware tricks to make X86 instruction set sing...

Dynamic resolution is 4K most of the time but don't forget that the devs also made other improvements to the game. Had the devs just improved the resolution to 4K and made no other improvements you could bet this game would be locked at 4K.

Another one from the Techpowerup Vega 64 review so using mature drivers.

Game was tested at Ultra settings (So above X settings) with a locked 4k resolution (So above X), even the RX580 is out performing X and the GTX1070 is pulling a 50%+ lead.

@Antwan3K: yeah I played it yesterday and it looked like a huge improvement to me, everything is just so much more detailed and defined and in this game it helps a lot considering you are constantly examining your environment and trying to pick up little objects and such, so much easier on the eyes now it feels.

3. Not accurate. Dynamic resolution is programmed to kick in if the engine cant hit whatever frame rate the developer decides. It doesnt only happen with a GPU bottleneck.

Yes it does, if you're CPU limited dropping the resolution won't all of a sudden make the CPU deliver more throughput.

If you're CPU can only deliver 24fps then dropping the resolution and allowing the GPU to deliver more throughput won't change that 24fps bottleneck on the CPU.

If your GPU can only deliver 24fps then dropping the resolution will allow the frame rate to increase as it reduces GPU bottleneck.

This is hardware 101.

@scatteh316: that is true. It's like telling an artist to paint a portrait. Two separate job. You (the cpu) say hey paint this portrait. The artist (the gpu) then paints it. Whether he uses water based paint, oil based paint, crayons (these are different resolutions) doesn't affect the job of you telling him to paint the portrait. So let's say you have a stuttering problem (cpu bottleneck) whether he draws with oil based paint or a pencil (low vs high resolution) won't change the fact that he has to wait for you to get your words out before he can draw.

Hope that makes sense did that on the fly lol

It's a good thing I can do both :)

Back on topic, I beat the game on PC but Fallout 4 wasn't as fun as New Vega was. Looking at the vid from DF, it runs like ass in a wooded area at daytime, and that's running mod free. I think they overdid it with the God Ray enhancement and the FPS suffer for it. Keep in mind this is a Bethesda game after all, there games are always a buggy mess and I'm not even surprise they aren't even trying anymore.

I think this one would be better.

The buyer (CPU) says paint this portrait and gives 5 colours to use even though the artist (GPU) can handle 10 colours which limits the portrait..........The artist is limited by the customer.

Or

The buyer (CPU) says paint this portrait and gives the artist 10 colours to use but the artist (GPU) can only handle 5 colours which limits the portrait....... The customer is limited by the artist.

This is the game on my PC. We can go on and on about specs, but it's pointless. This is what you can achieve on PC.

@scatteh316: actually, you're right about how the hardware works, but I believe he's right about how the dynamic scaling mechanism works. Specifically, dropping the res won't fix the frame drop in the case where it's a CPU issue, as you noted, but that doesn't mean the code is smart enough to know that. I believe it will drop in response to the failing framerate, regardless of the cause. This is why we have a game with dynamic res and YET the framerates still dip: because, as you noted, in this case the resolution is dropping to solve a problem that the resolution cannot solve.

Like I said, I have a PC that I play games on but it doesn't even begin to touch the Xbox One X so the "PC" version of Fallout 4 is vastly inferior for me versus what's on Xbox One X..

That's because specs don't matter. Why should they? Unless you set a specific price range, then the sky is the limit. In the end, it's all about what you choose(or can choose to afford). I'm running a 1080 gtx with a 7700k, because it's a choice for me.

@Antwan3K: I know what you mean. There are a wide range of possible specifications for a PC. Generally speaking, I think when people state 'PC' blankly, they are referring to a top-range PC.

Personally, I know my PC outperforms the Xbox One X, although I do not play games in 4k. I play them in 1080p with high frame rates. My PC runs Fallout 4 above 60fps and includes a GTX 1080 and a AMD Ryzen 5 6 core processor.

Like I said, I have a PC that I play games on but it doesn't even begin to touch the Xbox One X so the "PC" version of Fallout 4 is vastly superior for me on Xbox One X..

I don't think it's asking too much of PC enthusiasts to actually be a bit more specific with their claims and I'd actually like to see DF do the same..

It's pretty much said by DF almost every time that PC can beat console "with the right hardware." It's even said in the video of the thread. The Xbox One X is equivalent to an RX 580. So any PC with that or above can outperform the Xbox One X, sometimes while pushing better quality visuals. This doesn't need to be repeated each and every time.

Dynamic resolution is frame rate dependent. Honestly, it doesnt even have to be frame rate dependent. It can be whatever the developer wants.

I think he WANTS it to be GPU limited, but thats not the only reason that resolution drops, that is what i was getting at.

Fallout is a CPU intensive game............mostly because of the outdated engine which is compounded by them trying to add modern rendering techniques to such an old code base.

It is not that Pro or X1X is weak when it comes to GPU, its the CPU................and even I7s struggle with the engine.
