I've heard that the game isn't as good as everyone was expecting, but why is that? any particular reason?

Story is mediocre at best and terrible at worst depending on how much you care about the setting or last 2 games.Serious balance issues in hell and inferno difficulty. Much less about actual difficulty and much more about gear checks, cheap enemy combos, and incredibly punishing damage.
Still plenty of lag issues. You may see you dodged an attack but nope you didn't the latency says so, enjoy yet another frustrating death. And that's not including the disconnects and the fact that nephalem valor drops when you leave even if you didn't want to.
Terrible item randomization. I mean how many times must I see a rare crossbow as a DH only to identify it and see it has intellect strength and no damage at all? How many times must I waste crafting materials on garbage that nobody would wear? For every semi-decent piece you get you have to wade through hundreds of items that are completely useless junk. They want you to use the auction house to buy upgrades and it's painfully obvious.
Definitely feels unfinished. The RMAH didn't even go up until almost a month after release, and even still they haven't released the commodity or gold sales. PVP is not in. Plenty of stats like attack speed are fundamentally broken and only now getting fixed. Builds aren't balanced. Some minor but still very noticeable bugs made it into the final game.
I'm actually saying this as someone who still plays all the time. Mostly because my friends are. The game is fun and captures the addictive feel but it has some glaring flaws compared to blizzard's usual pedigree.
All I do now is run siege breaker, and heart. That's all that's worth doing.I'm most likely taking a break until 1.03 as most of my friends just don't play this anymore.
