What do you guys think? Both companies have been pretty outspoken about the JRPG decline, or did the JRPG developers do this to themselves?

Wouldn't JRPG developers be the one killing their own games? Western arrogance is getting quite big if you ask me.

So how is Xenoblade's story?

I read a basic summary of it and played through the game. Thought the story was great.

Read an in depth summary of the plot the other day. Thought the story was amazing.

The characters are a bit lacking though, run of the mill for the most part.

That article is full of crap. The guy from Bioware said FF13 was not an RPG, not JRPG's in general. He then claims he takes the high road, oh the irony. Yes, the high road, that would be the Fox news high road of misquoting people for your own indulgence.

No. There you go. A nice simple answer. The JRPG hasn't died. Never even got close, and it's more than likely that it never will. WRPG will never compete with JRPG. They are far too different to be in contension with one another. It's like pitting Forza against Alex the Kid. Everything is fine. Just keep buying the games and they'll keep coming thick and (kinda) fast.

As to "sameness" or "easiness" or "no choice" complaints: please look at the Shin Megami Tensei franchise. That should be enough to dispel those three.

I don't think any company making WRPGs had anything to do with it...I stopped playing JRPGs because of the linearity - no such thing as "New Game", just a restart.

Nah, not really. The fact that the companies making JRPGs refuse to change the formula has more to do with it. Heck, I realized JRPGs are second string role-playing games back when I first played the original Fallout. After that it became clear the Final Fantasy games I loved so much were really the minor leagues. At least back then the formula was tinkered with a little bit here and there. Now it's a barren wasteland of gameplay mechanics that are now two generations old.

The only game that comes to mind is Breath of Fire II. I found a video of fight near the end of the game where the group fights a purple dragon. Half way through, a second purple dragon makes an appearance; can't beat that. =P

I was having a hard time enjoying JRPGs this gen until I started playing Eternal Sonata. This game is awesome and really reminds me of JRPGs from old.

Really JRPG developers hurt themselves by failing to innovate, or readily accept this generation (as a whole).

They are far from dead though. Heck a JRPG won GS GOTY last year.

Then there was Valkyria Chronicles before that too.

Can't say they killed it. After all, I found Bioware's RPG horrible and Bethesda's RPG mediocre. If anything, RPGs as a whole have turned stale.

Oh yeah? I've actually played only three JRPGs from this generation, so maybe I'll check Eternal Sonata out sometime. Just recently purchased a DS, so I have a feeling I'll be picking up a few more JRPGs.

hakanakumono

I'm really hoping the 3DS finds a median between presentation and budget with affordibility in this genre. But HD might not be the problem, I think it may just be lack of keeping schedule, I don't see why JRPGs need to take so obnoxiously long to come out.
