2 things.

1) The handheld market. Its grown so large in Japan and has taken many JRPG that would have otherwise been on consoles.

2) JRPG devs just arent as daring as they were in previous gens. I think its really unlikely we'll see something as risky as Xenosaga series or Vagrant Story.

whoever said Final Fantasy 13 outsold every WRPG this gen, it couldn't possible have outsold Fallout 3.

they've made them worse imo. It seems now that any game with a leveling system is called an RPG

They are fading away. They're not selling well on consoles in japan, and real bad in the west.

Not at all, the slow decline has been more from the fact that development cost (Because of hardware) has risen. But hey, it's a decline, not death. Just look at all of the ones we have out and the news ones we're getting soon. I'm still enjoying the genre to be perfectly honest.

JRPGs and unoriginal developers in Japan killed the JRPG. All Bioware and Bethesda did was allow us to play amazing games while we watch Japan sink.

I'd take Mass Effect, Fallout 3 and Oblivion this gen over the top 50 JRPG's ever. But thats me, I love Lost Odyssey and Final Fantasy 7 though.

Last time i checked FF13 outsold any WRPG this gen

despite FF13 being the worst FF

jasonharris48

Gee cuz Nintendo couldn't put out Mario Watches Paint Dry and sell 7 million copies just because it has Mario in the title even though it would be the worst Mario game ever.

FFXIII was a long awaited and hyped game from a well established franchise. That doesn't mean it isn't a lame boring game that many people regret buying because it was the same as the last ten releases.

Judging by that last sentence I take it you never played FFXIII and you hardly know anything about the game. It was nothing like past FF titles (same goes for FFXII). Plus most of the main stream FF titles are different from one another.

I don't have to play FFXIII to know it is point A to point B like the last 12, save FFXII which was somewhat more open. Same thing, different story.

almost all games we play we have to travel on linear paths. ff13 world opens up atleast you would know that if you played it.

Doesn't sound like he has played a FF since the first one.

Well you couldn't be more wrong. I've played FF games since the NES. Every release in the U.S. I owned and played except for the most recent FXIII which I just haven't gotten around to yet. I loved FF games so much I played FFXI online for 6 years from the PS2 launch until I hung up my mmo shoes a few months ago. The only MMO I ever played and I only played it because it was a part of the FF franchise. FF is in my blood. FF games made me love RPG games since the very first one I played back in 1990. The franchise and JRPGs in general have NOT evolved or developed much at all. That's fine. They aren't my favorite anymore. This isn't an arguement saying JRPGS SUCK. Just telling the truth. They haven't done much different in 20 years and some people have moved on and put JRPGs at the bottom of their play list.

Yeap. That's why some of us got bored with them.

VladJasonDrac

I don't think that's a feature people should except when it comes to JRPGs though.

Then why lump them in an RPG category if they have as much customization and choices as an action adventure title like Batman:AA?

Haven't played many JRPGs, have you?

Sweet so then games like Batman:AA are now JRPGs then. it has pretty graphics a cool story and you can get XP to put into powering up your weapons. Never mind guys I apologize. I guess I really do still love JRPGs and the last Batman game proves it. My bad.

I have no idea what your talking about, I'm saying a good amount of JRPGs have customization.

Bioware killed jRPGs when they released Baldurs Gate 2. Bethesda killed themselves when they released Oblivion. Bethesda are probably the most overrated RPG devs. Oblivion was a cliche'd mess, and Fallout 3 was an overpatriotic, "lol you can blow mutants limbs off" childish, and fake gaming experience. They completely failed to capture the original Fallouts grim, macabre tone. Bioware are also a shadow of their former selves.

No their not. Explain to me how FFVII,FFVIII,FFIX,XIIwas similar to FFX (gameplay wise, story, characters, customization wise)? Having a opinion is one thing but mindlessly bashing something you know nothing about is a different story.

High production costs this gen killed JRPGs. Japanese companys just cant compete with US companys. Thats why most of the games dont sell well becuase most have **** graphics and no advertising. The only company that can is Square Enix but instead of trying to appeal to the JRPG fan they are trying to bring in new fans and thats why they havent made a good game in 10 years.

The best JRPG Ive ever played came out a month ago, so I dont think so.

YuriSH

I'm going to be very disappointed if Xenoblade doesn't end up being in my top 5. I have a friend who says it's one of the greatest rpgs ever, but you man I think each post you make references to Xenoblade in some kind of way lol it's getting a bit ridiculous lol.

Xenoblade is a complete flop in sales. If you don't live in Japan, I wouldn't expect to see this game.

That's OK though. The Last Story looks great. So good it might be the first jRPG I like.

Game pics.

Game trailer.

Imo both these devs suck, their games are souless, Bioware is better then Bethesda, but still needs to get some more talent imo. They are extremely talented in a lot of areas but the fail hard somewhere, their games always feel the same, it's like once you've played a Bioware game you've played them all. Bethesda imo is the most shocking "successfull" dev ever. I don't understand how their games get such high scores.

I know what you mean with Bethesda once you get past the open world you realize how bad alot of things are in the game. I tried to play oblivion again and I couldnt even make it out of the sewers becuase the gameplay is so boring.

i think the bad JRPGs killed the JRPGs, personally.
