Peter Moore [former VP of M$ and creator of Xbox] was so adamant that GTA IV was the key to Xbox 360's success that he even put a fake tattoo on his arm to gloat at E3.

This all came to an impasse today as Take-Two revealed in a meeting that GTA IV in fact sold 50/50 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 of the 13 million units. It was further clarified that GTA IV sold 50/50 not only everywhere, but in the US as well. This was a bit confusing as the Xbox 360's user base is literally twice the size of the PS3 base in the US.

Honestly, I had a difficult time believing this myself despite the fact it was coming from Take-Two. Microsoft put a great deal of marketing budget behind GTA IV with exclusive commercial deals and enticement of exclusive DLC. This proved two things to me today - DLC does not sway gamers into buying a game on a specific platform and franchise platform loyalty does indeed exist.

From what I remember if a certain amount of the DLC did not sell, TakeTwo would have to pay back the 50 million.

Maybe MS should've spent that money on some good first/second party exclusives rather than DLC for a game everyone stopped caring about 5 minutes after finishing it.

How many people even knew that DLC was coming exclusively to the 360 when they purchased it last April? I know i did, but i'm talking about the casuals.

That's the other thing. The article points out that most people who bought GTA IV had already owned a 360 or PS3, so it wasn't much of a system seller. I know I bought my PS3 in December of 2008 and had no interest in the game.

Harsh, but there is definitely a lot of truth to this statement. To be fair to GTA, I loved it the second time through, when I wasn't expecting anything from it.

And what the hell is a second-party exclusive? I've been awake for about 36 hours, but I am pretty sure that makes about as much sense as a Second Person Shooter.

GTA was always a system-seller for me last gen, but last gen each GTA was such a radical improvement on the last in terms of new additions. GTAIV was stripped to the bone, and while arguably a better game for it, it certainly lacked the WOW factor of the 3 from the previous gen.

NPD research has shown that 75% of gamers prefer retail over DD:

http://www.edge-online.com/news/npds-frazier-consumers-prefer-retail

In a recent poll topic on Gamespot's System Wars forum, hard copy is the clear winner as well with 75% of voters preferring a hard copy over DD.

http://www.gamespot.com/pages/forums/show_msgs.php?topic_id=26804834&page=0

So it looks like M$' plan to hype DD has backfired.

The DLC sold a reported 1 million already and an expected 2 million by Oct. 2009. 20 bucks a pop - you do the math. :P

Oh, I'm sure DLC itself sold well, but it didn't affect sales of the 360 or the GTA IV game itself as Take Two confirmed.

Take Two has nothing to say about 360 sales. Even if it didn't improve its sales (which are actually higher than the PS3), I'm glad to being able to play that DLC.

I hear ya but the GTA series had/has a better following on the Sony systems and seeing as the total 360's/PS3's out there are fairly close in numbers, something tells me RS is quite happy with it being multiplat and happier yet, they are continuing to earn money from the 360 version through DLC but the PS3 revenue is sorta dried up right now so .. just sayin. :)

Lost and Damned is the first GTA game (except the GBA one) that I haven't bought on day one and played through obsessively. I really wish it was out for PS3, but that said, it's absolutely not worth buying a new console for. A new full GTA game being exclusive would do it though, absolutely.

When the numbers don't go their way, Xbots resort to personal attacks and making up imaginary numbers like 8 million. Desperate times for desperate measures, I suppose.

It's hard to see GTA V going exclusive considering, if the GTA IV sales are true, Rockstar would be losing roughly half a fanbase (and profit).

Well tbh anyone who really wanted the DLC would have gotten GTA4 on the 360 anyway.

And whilst Im sure its brilliant, its DLC, and why anyone thought that DLC would shift consoles, even if it is as good as a full game, I will never know.

Fact is its DLC, if the same game were realeased on disk, things might have been different, but to normal consumers DLC is just an add on...

I think a lot of people are looking at this situation the wrong way. Just because GTAIV and the DLC did not boost console sales for xbox360, people assume MS wasted their money. This is simply not true. To get some perspective, you have to think back to the PS2/Xbox days. PS2 was the dominant console and MS needed to do something, anything to claw away some market share from Sony. Paying a mountain load of money for GTAIV and DLC did just that. It didn't boost sales but neither did it boost the PS3 sales and as a result, both consoles are still toe to toe. I am not spinning but I really think this is a victory for MS and the Xbox360. Imagine the damage had GTAIV remained a Playstation exclusive. The same thing will happen when FF13 is released. MS will be in the console wars for a few generations to come. The aim this gen is to make money, plant its brand name into the living rooms of the public, and offer itself as an enticing alternative to the PS3. So far it has achieved and exceeded those goals.

it's not an imaginary numbe, just off by 1 million, the OFFICIAL (ie FACT) install base for the 360 is 28 million, 21 million for the ps3, that'sa gap of 7 million, when cows find themselves losing an argument they always cry foul, listen SONY are in LAST place, they are the ones who are desperate, cos they are the only ones not making a profit on there hardware, MS does not even have to sell any more 360's to carry on making money off of it, and remember the 360 is just a sideshow for MS, they don't even need it to make money from it. and if you think the most expensive console is going to outsell the cheapest by 7 million 3 years then you have no sense of reality at all, face it MS are making money, xbots are getting more games and cheaper hardware, all i see is cows getting desperate, you don't see xbots making a million threads to justify there purchase, you posting a million threads bashing the 360 and MS is desperation.

For some reason I think Rockstar knew this right from the beginning. Knowing as in the DLC isn't going to be a system seller, and all their intent was was just to make a tad bit more money out of it.

That's incredibly dumb on every level imaginable.

1. GTA has NEVER been an exclusive game

2. The 360's userbase is still larger than the PS3's, and even if by the time GTA 5 comes out and the PS3 has surpassed the 360 in sales the margin won't be that large, so just dismissing a large part of the people that bought the last game in favor of releasing an exclusive GTA would be the most bonehead manuver in the history of videogame business decisions EVER. We are talking millions of people. Rockstar isn't walking away from that kind of money. Especially when GTA is such an expensive game to make.

Microsoft was already strong in the US even witht the original Xbox... this gen they are so much stronger... imo they should've spent their money on buying exclusivity from square-enix... on Dragon Quest that game would've boost console sales over there quite easily... anyways imo more than what the gta dlc did here in NA.

If you put aside your fanboyism for a minute, you would see that the DLC was released too late to know if it affected sales. Most people thought that it would release last fall because thats what they were told, then it got delayed. So those "affected" people would already have the game based on that assuption........no?? Geez!! Some people

http://www.edge-online.com/news/npds-frazier-consumers-prefer-retail

In a recent poll topic on Gamespot's System Wars forum, hard copy is the clear winner as well with 75% of voters preferring a hard copy over DD.

So it looks like M$' plan to hype DD has backfired.

microsoft never hped DD , a lot of original xbox games had downloadable content, i have never heard a statement from MS pushing DD.

When asked if they would support a Blu Ray add on MS answered claiming that formats are the past and they are preparing for the future which is DD. Thats also why they teamed up with Netflix.

From what I remember if a certain amount of the DLC did not sell, TakeTwo would have to pay back the 50 million.

Its still a waste of time if they don't make a ton of money on it.

The DLC sold a reported 1 million already and an expected 2 million by Oct. 2009. 20 bucks a pop - you do the math. :P

I am doing the math, are you? So, 2 million by October 2009 @ $20 a pop, that's 40 million. So, by October they still aren't pulling a profit, right? Not to mention, the numbers you gave were from Pachter and not from MS themselves.

You do know that MS paid for TWO episodes right?? the other will be out sometime this fall, so it was well worth it imo.

Great point. I thought of this after submitting and knew someone was going to catch it. I guess it comes down to whats an acceptable profit? If MS invests 50 million into something, how much do they expect out of it? Plus, don't you have to account for the cost of development? Wouldn't that mean that only part of the $20 for each game goes to MS?????
