That's competition for you.
The Wright Brothers created the airplane, but if others didn't get involved, aviation wouldn't have evolved like it did today.
So, sure M$ copied from Sony, Sega, and Nintendo, BUT, now we have LIVE, so it's all good. Just keep it coming.
BUSINESS is BUSINESS.
Was what M$ did underhanded, and sneaky? Sure. But M$ always has been this way, as long as it's legal folks. Sony should have anticipated this, and they failed to. Despite what I think is wrong or right, this was perfectly acceptable.
Microsoft essentially let Sony pay Millions for an advanced chip, and had the same team make one for them, but cheaper.lol. It wasn't a direct steal, it was more having the team already experienced due to Sony's money.M$ approached them, because it was smart.
Sony paid, and M$ used. It was just smart, and I doubt Sony will use IBM again, or if they do, they will definately protect themselves better.

yea microsoft cant make their own technology that's why they are making the damn central processing unit for the successsor to xbox360.
[QUOTE="II-FBIsniper-II"]Yes, Microsoft stole from Sony, got their product out before Sony could, and spent less money on it. :roll:c1o2d3yThats what the article says... I know. You know, except the stealing part.
I am not really sure what they took since both CPUs are completely different form each other. But if it's basically saying they're the same then the 360 would be more powerful then the PS3 since it has a better graphic card. In other words the limit of the 360 is also the ps3s limit.

It's not saying they are the same, it's saying the 360 got a much cheaper 'Cell-Type" Chip from the Cell Creator's. The Cell is still better, but Sony had to wait longer for it. They waited, but didn't get the results they should have from IBM.
[QUOTE="choffy"]Nope because they bought the damn thing. How is that stealing?XTy
It wasn't. They got Sony to pay for the expensive Research and Development, and basically got a cheap Cell. Good deal.

MS and IBM playing smart, Sony doing it wrong. Two friendly american companies, cutting out the Japanese corp. I wonder what fun stories next gen will bring. Last gen. we got the ATI and Xbox scandal.

Microsoft just did what any smart competitor would do in that they waited, layed low, and waited for the right time to make a move. Sure, it's unethical because it's practically stealing, though they paid for it, but that is the way of competition. Let them do the work (and money-spending) for you :PSony spent $400 million to design a chip for the 360  PWNEDCheckingAvailabPwned indeed. I just have to thank them for making the 360 what it is today :)
MS didn't steal, they legitimately bought the technology. Sony was just dumbCheckingAvailab
Yeah, stupid Sony for making a CPU that Microsoft couldn't even dream of making. Darn them for having an idea and furthering technology ahead instead of sticking with the old.
They should be as smart as those Microsoft executives who just know how to slap money in peoples faces buying everything that they can't make for themselves. Yeah Microsoft is so smart.
You should be happy, if Sony hadn't thought of the Cell back in 2002 when it was being developed, your 360 wouldn't of been as high end as it is right now. Even though the PowerPC isn't as good as the Cell, it just goes to show Microsoft can't make hardware as shown before when they had to buy all their parts for their previous console.
Hold on, I was to understand that the 360's 3 Core CPU was built from the Power PC chipset (64 bit), what used to be in Mac's during the G4 generation just before they're switch to Intel.AdobeArtistdamn, i thought it was G5, cos i heard they used 3 G5's (one to simulate each core) when building the cpu, i must have misread it, it was in the book "xbox 360 decloaked"

if i remember correctly, the ps1 would not have existed without nintendos techYou do realize that Microsoft is just the name of a company right? IT's the people that are hired by that company the do the 'making of things'. If MS wanted to hire someone or pay someone, much as Sony did, to produce something then they would. if i remember correctly, the ps1 would not have existed without nintendos techYou are somewhat correct. Nintendo wanted to make an CD attachment for the SNES, kinda like the Sega CD. But in order to do they hired Sony to make the gaming attachment. After Sony had almost finished the attachment Nintendo broke the contract with Sony to go with Philips.
But it didn't end there, Ken Kutaragi decided that he could make a gaming console for Sony alone, the project was then put in place for the PSX.
And Japanese companies certainly play nice with each other sometimes too. Companies that do alot of business together, like MS and IBM, have very tight bonds more often than not. Its not like they violated any agreements or laws. Two friendly american companies, cutting out the Japanese corp. I wonder what fun stories next gen will bring. Ok, when has Microsoft ever made a break through in the hardware industry? Actually name one thing that Microsoft has developed at all that they haven't either bought or stole?
DOS - Nope bought that from a guy that developed DOS in his garage for $300.00 so they could sell it for millions to various companies. When it was supposed to be IBM exclusive might I add, also known as QDOS.
Windows - Microsoft was going to merge with Macintosh in which Apple showed the executives at Microsoft the GUI interface. Well surprisingly the contract fell through and not so long after Windows 3.1 was born.
Xbox - Parts bought from different manufactures.
Zune - Rip off on the Ipod.
Can anyone summarize the article for me? I cant read it right now :P.TREAL_Since
Sony and IBM were working on the Cell. MS went to IBM for design input on a new CPU for their new system, the 360. IBM showed MS what they were working on with Sony for the Cell, and they used some of the things that they learned on the Cell in the CPU for the 360.
Learn from one project to improve on the other. The issue people take is that Sony was funding the development of the Cell, which lead to the knowledge that IBM used in the 360's CPU. Its not illegal, its just the knocks of business.[QUOTE="TREAL_Since"]Can anyone summarize the article for me? I cant read it right now :P.SpruceCaboose

The knocks of business :(.All you need to do to find out what MS has brought new to the hardwrae industry is look up 'Microsoft patents'. And believe me MS holds an enormous number of patents. I think I've actually read that MS holds close to the largest number of patents out of every other company. I think it's hillarious that you're thinking of MS as a sentient being and you aren't thinking of them as a company with many sentient beings, each individually committed to their own tasks. I'm well aware of the past turmoil MS, as a whole, has caused for it's competitors but you fail to understand this is big business and Sony or any other company, to get ahead in the market, has to cut corners and what not. IF you see somethign that could make you a lot of money go for it by any means you can. How else do you think MS, or Sony for that matter, became so powerful?Ok, when has Microsoft ever made a break through in the hardware industry? They hold a number of patents, really? Must all be junk since they buy from everyone else. Also this whole sentient being thing, I have no clue what your getting at there. Microsoft started out with Bill Gates and he just hired a bunch of people like this.
But I guess Microsoft just needs more Developers, Developers, Developers!
and Sony hired a bunch of people to. My point is that if MS wanted to develop something they would hire a developer to do it. ITs no different than paying for the rights to dostirbute and already made product. Ones developed while the other isn't. Sony does exactly the same thing. They hire people to develop specific products. As both companies have mounds and mounds of money they can do this. in 2006 MS Landed it's 5000th patent which I'm sure will give you some idea of the number of patents they hold to this day. IF you want to talk about stealing or copying technology look no further than Sony itself. They are after all the ones that came up with the tacked on six axis controls after seeing what Nintendo was up to with their next system. They hold a number of patents, really? Sixaxis, are you kidding me, after what Microsoft took the Sixaxis is peanuts. The Sixaxis has also been confirmed multiple times to have been in development long before the Wii mote was announced in private or public.
Not to mention those 5000 patents that Microsoft has, are you kidding me? Microsoft has not released anything that is new to the general public be it something for their GUI operating system, again taken from Apple. Heck, Hanes patented a type of Sock just cause they added lettering on the bottom. That is how easy it is to patent something just cause you added a little of nothing to something thats old.
So again I ask, if you can give me something new and innovative that Microsoft has developed without stealing or buying, than by all means, lets hear it. That is unless you want to bring out the Table Computer which is just an Iphone only the size of a table. Innovative, WOW!
