Microsoft mind reading patent application

From ZDNET - "Microsoft invents lots of things from a pure technology standpoint. I've intimated that many such things exist in IPTV (the Microsoft division I work in), but I consider the Tablet PC (a form factor that hadn't been tried before), .NET generics which escape the problem of code bloat found in C++ templates, and custom SQL aggregation functions written in .NET that are a feature of the next version of SQL Server (Yukon) to be good examples."

From typepad - "Microsoft invests billions of dollars in both invention and innovation. The Microsoft Research Labs produce amazing inventions every year. Many of them are incorporated seamlessly into existing Microsoft products. Many others are extraordinary inventions, but don't fit with any Microsoft product."

As for the iPod Informationweek lists a story from 3005 that states "According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, patent applications that cover much of the technology associated with the iPod were submitted by Microsoft,"

Apple did develop the Ipod first, they had a patent for it back in October of 2002, whereas Microsoft had a patent for "a system for automatically generating music playlists based on one or more seed songs selected by the user." No where in there does it claim that the patent was for a portable device as a user friendly MP3 player or as such.

That article was only written cause of the filed complaint of Microsoft not developing such a device before Apple had it out on the market. Not to mention such a device wasn't even in development at Microsoft until after the Ipod was fully released and selling like hot cakes. Then low and behold Zune was released.

Fact of the matter the Tablet PC bombed utterly, they don't even sell those in general public stores anymore. As well as .NET which does nothing new or innovative that I couldn't of already done on some email or Messenger. Oh and ZDNet is owned by Microsoft by and by. If they are investing billions into junk like Vista and .NET, then it's no wonder why millions of users switch to Leopard or Linux.

Already every single major corporation may have a Windows running on their PC, but in the background, Linux is the one that is keeping their corporation working properly on their servers.

those were just the links I found in the first page in my generic google search. I'm not about to go long and into depth about what MS has developed and invented on a Gamespot thread in SW. MY main point was that while yes, MS did buy or copy many of the products they have (Such as DOS) other companies do exactly the same thing. They purchase technological rights to make money. That is how companies get ahead in this world. Especially in the Computer community. Every large scale company does this. Yes even your beloved Sony. They hire people to develop products or purchase the rights to the develop products outright. This does not make a company bad, it just makes it smarter than it's competitors. I'm tired of people hating on MS because it's "the cool thing to do". Bill Gates has far more business sense than anyone in these forums. He took a market that needed improvement and went all out for it whether it was purchasing the competition or copying their products.

And every major corporation most likely has Unix running on their servers not Linux.

Wrong on the Linux part, true Unix is a standard program for functionality, however Linux was decided to be just as functional as Unix as well as more user friendly for networking engineers. It's more widely used in business than Unix.

Company's do buy different patents when if it's in their intrest, and yes Sony does this as well. However Sony did come up with the idea of the Cell and brought it to IBM and Toshiba to help them develop it, so in that respect Sony does come up with their own ideas. As well as the Sony Bravia engine for their HDTV's and Blu-Ray.

Microsoft on the other hand has as been stated many times before, either stole or bought almost all the products that have made them famous. The infamous of course was buying DOS just to sell it again at millions more, and the most notorious was stealing the GUI interface from Apple.

M$ didn't get to be M$ without everything they've ever done. Sony should have realized who M$ were instead of thinking this kind of thing couldn't happen. M$'s history is full of moves like this, and that's just what we consumers know about! Great business move, like always M$.

For the Linux/Unix part: Perhaps then you can tell me why every multiplatform server provider doesn't list Linux on their site but does list Unix.

As stated, yes I am perfectly aware of DOS but again, if you see an oportunity to make loads of money and don't take it you are a fool. What you are commending Sony for is outsourcing with regards to the Cell. Something MS does in abundance. One thing MS did invent/improve on was the DirectX API, which was developed jointly by MS and nVidia who also developed the custom GPU for the original Xbox. Gates and Allen also developed the MBasic computer language while in college.

You obviously don't understand what I am getting at with Linux being used in Networking. "Netcraft in 2006 announced that 8 of 10 most reliable Internet hosting companies ran Linux distributions on their web servers." If you need a link I can get it for you. Not to mention how Linux is the main Operating System used in most Super Computers. Unix is not as popular in companies as it was back in the 1990's which indeed it was used then.

Also yes, Sony does outsource, that is quite different than buying someone else's ideas, and much greater than outright stealing them. I don't know why you are defending Microsoft so much, it is a known fact that many Computer Techs despise the Windows Operating system as well as the company that supplies it. It's a good American company in size only, however it's a bad company in reputation as well as integrity.

Eh, bash MS for "stealing" all you want Cows but I think we all know the truth. MS is a cornerstone company in the computer industry globally, where Sony a dime-a-dozen hardware manufacturer that has a long history of trying to force garbage tech on its users, failing more often than not (lucky for us), supplant perfectly functional technology with overly complex trash that is all hype and broken promises, being a "me-too!" company in a half-dozen areas of hardware production that others got to first...

Sony could drop off the face of the earth and there would be another company instantly to fill the void left by their absence. If MS were to similarly disappear, the computer industry would literally fall apart. MS has unified a flagellating industry creating a much needed global standard for software and compatibility, forcing everyone else to make their products work together rather than letting computers and digital media be divided into a series of companies vying for control, making an already complex industry a nightmare for the consumer. Criticize them all you want, but MS has brought *so* much more to the table than Sony in tech, and its importance in things working in this world is exponentially greater.

Looks like an intresting book to me. Also dosn't seem impossible, if M$ did contract IBM to make them a CPU and there's no clause stopping them using the cell then they proberbly would use the technology.

Both the ps3 and 360 cpus are based on powerpc, the authors of that book is just trying to create controversy to sell the book. IBM still would have built MS a powerpc cpu designed for gaming even if Sony didn't approach them first. The cell is over hyped in the first place, it isn't the amazing advancement that Sony claimed it to be. Sony could have just used an intel quad core cpu, the supercomputer on a chip was all bs.

Where exactly did theft take place? The cell was a joint project between Sony, IBM and Toshiba. IBM was free to build cpus based on cell tech, and they built one for MS. There was no theft, Sony just didn't place enough restrictions on what IBM was allowed to do.

you obviously don't know what you're talking about. RROD is mainly caused by GPU overheating, not the CPU. also, this problem is no longer present in the newer models of the 360. get your facts straight next time

he's absolutely right, computers run every thing now, even hospital equipment, they all use windows, if sony went down it would mean the end of an entertainment company if microsoft went down it would affect everyone, windows runs everything and MS runs windows.

What do you mean I don't know what I'm talking about? I was a victim of Microsofts crappy hardware, I never said any specifics on what goes bad, I just said that they didn't build a reliable system, sorry if it was confusing.
