Microsoft mind reading patent application
From ZDNET - "Microsoft invents lots of things from a pure technology standpoint. I've intimated that many such things exist in IPTV (the Microsoft division I work in), but I consider the Tablet PC (a form factor that hadn't been tried before), .NET generics which escape the problem of code bloat found in C++ templates, and custom SQL aggregation functions written in .NET that are a feature of the next version of SQL Server (Yukon) to be good examples."
From typepad - "Microsoft invests billions of dollars in both invention and innovation. The Microsoft Research Labs produce amazing inventions every year. Many of them are incorporated seamlessly into existing Microsoft products. Many others are extraordinary inventions, but don't fit with any Microsoft product."
As for the iPod Informationweek lists a story from 3005 that states "According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, patent applications that cover much of the technology associated with the iPod were submitted by Microsoft,"

Apple did develop the Ipod first, they had a patent for it back in October of 2002, whereas Microsoft had a patent for "a system for automatically generating music playlists based on one or more seed songs selected by the user." No where in there does it claim that the patent was for a portable device as a user friendly MP3 player or as such.
That article was only written cause of the filed complaint of Microsoft not developing such a device before Apple had it out on the market. Not to mention such a device wasn't even in development at Microsoft until after the Ipod was fully released and selling like hot cakes. Then low and behold Zune was released.
Fact of the matter the Tablet PC bombed utterly, they don't even sell those in general public stores anymore. As well as .NET which does nothing new or innovative that I couldn't of already done on some email or Messenger. Oh and ZDNet is owned by Microsoft by and by. If they are investing billions into junk like Vista and .NET, then it's no wonder why millions of users switch to Leopard or Linux.
Already every single major corporation may have a Windows running on their PC, but in the background, Linux is the one that is keeping their corporation working properly on their servers.
