I wrote an article for www.wiinintendo.net about initial reactions to the press conference in september, and how people feel now. Here's an excerpt below:

Back in September of last year (2006), Nintendo held a much awaited press conference that would unveil the last coveted details of their highly anticipated next(new)-gen console, the Nintendo Wii. Nintendo of America president, Reggie Fils-Aime, took the stage in New York and fulfilled every fanboy’s dreams by finally setting a price and release date. November 19th, 2006 at a price point of $249.xx, the Wii would see its worldwide debut, in North America. Included in the box: 1 Wii Console, 1 Wii Remote Controller, 1 Nunchuk Controller, all cables and usuals (manuals, etc.), and Wii Sports packed-in. As expected, the internet gaming community (watching live feeds via several sources) exploded with praise and criticism in nearly equal amounts. What were the main gripes? Do we even remember at this point? As far as I can remember, the complaints that most came up with were:

• The price
• The inclusion of Wii Sports
• The release date
• The exclusion of a second Remote/Nunchuk combo
• A few other small details

I, admittedly, feverishly argued each of these points in Nintendo’s favor that day, regardless of the fact that, obviously, I would’ve loved it to be released sooner, as well as cheaper. Despite which side you were on then, we all have an infinitely better grasp on what the Wii is now, and how far our $249.xx went. What do each of those objections look like in the post-launch light, and did Nintendo silence those asking, “Is it worth it?”

It's really fun. But a few more games need to come out (Square/Enix VC games, Super Metroid, MP3, SSB:B). But, that's just to keep me happy.

Yeah they justified it. The best Zelda ever (IMO), Trauma Center, Wii Sports, the hilarity of Rayman, Elebits, and that's all in the first month. I got a Wii launch day and I don't regret it one bit.

I'm not buying a Wii until more games come out. Why should I? For an extra 50 bucks I can get Gears, RS6, GRAW, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, and a lot more I don't feel like listing. The 360 is the best buy right now in my opinion.

$250 for a bunch of fun, yet basically old games with tacked on new control mechanics? Meh, IMHO no. Sure they may be fun, but right now its not providing anything new gameplay mechanic wise. Same-old, same old.

Nothing new gameplay mechanic wise? You just completely contradicted yourself. Games play out entirely differently simply for the fact that there are new control mechanics. The best example is elebits.

No, gameplay mechanics are not directly due to game control scheme changes. Elebits is just another mindless drone shooter with "WTF ZOMG LIGHT SHOOTER GUN LAWL" feling tacked on. It really hasn't revolutionzed crap about what we're playing. You can change how we play all day, you aren't changing the core gameplay.

Very well, 80 bucks, but I still think it's a better buy. There are a ton more games out for the 360, so even if you knock out the last 3, there's still more reason to get a 360 than a Wii right now. Which is why I bought a 360 instead of a Wii.

Hey, at least you admitted it. You can't even use a 360 core without buying SOMETHING else.

I don't think $250 is worth getting a Wii right now. I'm still waiting for a game that utilizes the Wiimote to the point where it would be impossible to play that game with a regular gamepad. That or SSBB :P

Good article. The Wii just needs a lot more games. Right now they don't have a whole lot of quality titles and that could hurt it down the road. More exclusives would be good.

No it hasn't no console can JUSTIFY it's price at launch, maybe in a years time like 360. 360 wasn't worth it when it first came out. If you are slightly more wealthy than someone then yeah it probably has. But really $250 is a lot of money and The wii still has a lot to prove. New gameplay ideas which are merely half baked with some titles isn't that impressive, i'm not bashing Wii as a whole but everyone who is having an orgasm about it.

Sure you can. You can play games on it immediately without buying anything else. The core to me is like a test run. I can see someone buying it just to see if they are going to like some of the games and then selling it if they don't or upgrading it with the HD if they plan on keeping it. I honestly don't know why M$ even created the Core though. They should have stuck with the Premium only.

Yes they did justify the price tag, I think that is quite obvious. Especially considering you can buy $200 worth of games right now. But I still like the Playstation 3 better even though it's kinda hard to keep away from a Wii IMHO.

We're talking about which system is the overall better buy. So we might as well add the price of every game you'll buy for the Wii too, and the 360. But going by what you're saying, fine, 20 bucks for Kameo. Still a better buy IMHO. Or are we talking about right out of the box?

Yes, out of the box. You don't need to buy a single game when you purchase a wii console, as wii sports is packed in. So you have to buy one for the 360, because no game is packed in.

$250 isnt worth it now or later. Its esp not worth the up to $430 the average 4 person house will spend on it, before getting a proper game. It would have been worth $250 last gen.

Well then yeah, I agree, the Wii has more out of the box than the core. But I still think buying the 360 is a better buy right now because it has a bigger back catalog. Even if you buy the Premium and one game, the 360 is a better buy because of the bigger back catalog of games. But for out of the box, yeah, the Wii wins.

Wii Sports is not worth $50, so IMO the $250 pricetag isn't justifiable. The system should be $200 or less.

Wii Sports is not worth $50, so IMO the $250 pricetag isn't justifiable. The system should be $200 or less.Timstuff
What's it worth then?

[QUOTE="SmashBrosLegend"][QUOTE="septic_death"]In that $250 they put around $5 on the video card, OH WAIT................. they used the ones from the gamecube they didn't sell.!!Xbox360gamer1
Wii GPU: 243 mhz Gamecube GPU: 162mhz you=fail

Hold on while I build a PC that PWNS the Wii for less then that

CPU:    AMD Athlon 64 3400+ 2.2Ghz - $50
GPU:     Nvidia  7600GT  , 590MHz, 256mb , 12 pipelines  -$89
RAM:   Corsair 512mb -$35
Mobo:  ASUS 939 micro ATX -$39
DVD: Lite-on DVD  -$15
PSU : Atrix 400 WATT -$15
Wi-Fi- ****** USB G adapter $10

That shoudl be under $250

Umm... I'm pretty sure that comes to 253.

[QUOTE="Hoffgod"]Yeah they justified it. The best Zelda ever (IMO), Trauma Center, Wii Sports, the hilarity of Rayman, Elebits, and that's all in the first month. I got a Wii launch day and I don't regret it one bit.

"The best Zelda ever" was supposed to be for the GC a year or 2 earlier. No. The Wii price should have been $150 since it is literally a small GC.

I'm not buying a Wii until more games come out. Why should I? For an extra 50 bucks I can get Gears, RS6, GRAW, Oblivion, Mass Effect, Bioshock, Halo 3, and a lot more I don't feel like listing. The 360 is the best buy right now in my opinion.

fatzombiepigeon

Ehhh, ignore, it's already be pointed out.

Unfortunately, for $50 more with the 360 you don't have the ability to save games. You'd need to buy a memory card that costs another $40, so the price difference is more like $90.
