Wtf???

Quote:

NVIDIA contacted us today after we published the "PlayStation 3 GPU Less Powerful than GeForce 7800" story based on a report found at The Inquirer. Derek Perez, NVIDIA's Director of Public Relations, was kind enough to provide us the actual paragraph from the September issue of PSM. Here is the information from the blurb in question:

There's no doubting that NVIDIA's new 7800GTX is the ultimate in PC graphics technology. The card's G70 GPU, which is more than twice as powerful as two of NVIDIA's previous top-of-the-line 6800 boards, shares a lot of similar workings with the PS3's RSX chip - only it isn't as fast. Oh, and it retails for $599.
The article actually says the GeForce 7800 GTX is not as fast as the RSX graphics processing unit that NVIDIA developed for the PlayStation 3.

We apologize for any confusion and we'd like to thank NVIDIA for providing the exact info.

Dee dee dee?? A 7800GTX is still a great card in case you didn't know. Combined with the Cell and a closed architecture, that makes the PS3 a very powerful console.

Btw, for those of you who don't know, a 7800GTX is basically the same as a 7900GT. Last I knew, a 7900GT can run any PC game to date. Couple it with the Cell in a dedicated gaming console = greatness.

I know I have a 7800gs but the article is old so it is misleading about power and some people don't care/know about graphics cards.

You can't use a benchmarking program on both a PC and a PS3 and get exactly the same optimization on both platforms.

I'm never going to fine nVidia's comment but I will post the 7800 GTX's specs and the RSX's specs.

RSX:

550 MHz G70 based GPU on 90 nm process

302 million transistors

24 parallel pixel pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

8 parallel vertex pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

256MB GDDR3 RAM at 700 MHz

7800 GTX 256 MB:

430MHz G70 GPU using 110 nm process

302 million transitors

24 pixel pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

8 vertex pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

256MB GDDR3 RAM at1.2 GHz

7800 GTX 512 MB:

550MHz G70 GPU using90 nm process

302 million transitors

24 pixel pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

8 vertex pipelines (27 FLOPS per pipeline)

512MB GDDR3 RAM at1.7 GHz

Those are true statistics and as you can see, the RSX has a 28% higher core clock speed but its memory is clocked much lower(yes I know it can access the other memory but using two different types of RAM is extremely tedious to program and generally inefficient. Thats why you never see PC's with multiple formats of system RAM. maybe different brands, but they are always the same format.). When you bump it up to the 512 MB not only does it have more VRAM, but it also has the same core clock speed, and the memory is clocked a full GHz higher.

That wasn't the point though... Of course if you have a single hardware config its going to end up getting more out of it but that doesn't change the fact that it is honestly an aging card already. the 7800 GTX has in no way shape or form reached its peak on the PC and I believe Crysis in DX9 will illustrate that. When you give developers as gifted a Crytek a team of 120 people and $30 million, your going to see miracles. That's why I can't understand how everyone is saying Crysis won't be properly optimized.... I mean seriously, look at Crytek's last game, Far Cry. With Far Cry they had maybe $1 million budget, 25 people and a rushed schedule. And look at the hardware that runs the game at the graphical fidelity it has. A 6800 can max the game out EASILY and yet it still compares very nicely to a lot of games even today. I'm not worried about gameplay, graphics, or optimizations with Crysis at ALL. I am however still not sure they will get the net-code perfect or have a top-tier story. From the looks of the beta and all the previews those worries are unfounded though.

Xenos is not capable of Direct x10 in any way, shape, or form.

FACT

The Xenos only shares some architecture similarities with the HD2000 series. In fact, I've seen it strongly suggested that it is similar in performance to a X1800XL.

The Xenos is actually the early prototype R600 card. It has some R600 architecture but it is mainly the R500 architecture. The Xenos isa bitstronger in terms of pure specs than its sister card, the X1800XT.

The Xenos is actually the early prototype R600 card. It has some R600 architecture but it is mainly the R500 architecture. The Xenos isa bitstronger in terms of pure specs than its sister card, the X1800XT.

yor are igth but it is more closer to the 1900x theanr500 ala it being r600 x2000x but weakerfor

sorry, but that is just PR damage control.

the RSX has only 128 BIT MEMORY INTERFACE.

the 7800gtx has 256 BIT MEMORY INTERFACE

THE RSX IS A BUDGET GPU SOLUTION. A LOW END VIDEOCARD LIKE THE 8600GT / GTS IS 2 TIMES FASTER.

im a PC gamer first but do enjoy my ps3 and 360. One point that isn't mentioned is the fact that a RSX or R500 can do quite a bit due to it being in the controlled environment of the console. A 7800GTX or X1800XT couldn't do gears of war like it is done on the 360 or Fight Night Round 3 or Heavenly Sword. I think virtua fighter 5 arcade boards use a 6800GT or something last last gen. The reason it looks so good is because the game was completely optomized for the 6800gt. There is NO WAY god of war 2 would work on some integrated 4MB GPU like the PS2 has.

So basically...even if the 7800GTX was IDENTICAL to the RSX; it would be moot because a 7800GTX in a console would be much more efficiently used than a 7800GTX in a PC

end thread.
