For all of Microsoft's talk about a digital distribution future, I find it wierd that Sony is the one that is actually pushing the barrier as far as digital distrubtion is concerned. I mean all the console manufacturers have their services where they sell smaller, simpler games and/or older games but Sony is the only one that is offering downloadable versions of big, modern games. As of right now you can download Warhawk, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Gran Turismo Prologue, Siren, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and by the end of this holiday season you can add Burnout Paradise, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Wipeout HD to that list. Hell, throw in the PSone c1assics and the typical downloadable games (i.e. Super Stardust HD, PixelJunk Eden, PixelJunk Monsters, Bionic Commando Rearmed, MegaMan 9, etc.) and the PS3 is the only system that I could see as even having a chance of fulfilling my gaming needs soley with it's downloadable content. Sony is doing the same thing with the PSP, but to an even greater extent offering many of it's best games (Jean D'arc, Loco Roco, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Wipeout Fusion, Ape Escape, etc.) for download.

Thoughts?

You know what I say? A huge meh! to digital distribution. It's alright for smaller arcade experiences that are inexpensive, but when it comes to full fledged retail style games, I'll take my case, instruction booklet, artwork, and disc. I don't dig paying the same price for a less expensive avenue of selling games.

Why did you quote my PSone C1assics comment, that is not even what this topic is about, those games as well as the games on the Virtual Console and the Xbox games available for download are all old games. Nobody is going to buy an expensive HD system to play old games from previous generations. My point is that games like Warhawk, Siren, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty, Wipeout HD, SOCOM: Confrontation, Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Burnout Paradise are all recently developed HD games that make use of the PS3 hardware. They're not small, simple games (i.e. Super stardust HD, Geometry Wars, etc.) nor are they older games.

Xbox had Marketplace..which is Digital Distribution. 360 had Xbox Originals on marketplace before PSN had their stuff. So quit acting like Sony is doing more DD than MS. Just quiet.

What about Xbox Originals? My Ninja Gaiden Black takes up 6GB on my HD. And if your going to talk about digital distribution, make sure to mention TV and Movies, because if you did, you would know that MS was WAY ahead of that curve before Sony. Don't pick and choose, state everything.

Sony is doing more...full version game downloads (this gen games, and last gen games). Sony is doing more than MS when it comes to DD on consoles.

Agreed. Xbox had the TV/movie/arcade distribution LAST gen and cows think Sony freaking invented DD on consoles cause they release 3 games.

I guess they figure that when people are going to be spending $60 on a game, they would rather buy a retail copy and get a disc with it. That's really the only thing holding digital distribution back.

Although, they ARE making progress. Just take a look at games like Portal: Still Alive, Vigilante 8: Arcade, Phantasy Star Universe, The Maw, and WarWorld.

They don't just mean games though. Take one look at their movie and tv show library and you'll know what they're talking about.

So you think Sony has surpassed MS when MS just got Netflix to add a ton more movies? Marketplace gets new shows every month as well. It gets at least one new arcade game every WEEK standard. Xbox Originals are added frequently. Yet because sony releases glorified expansion packs and demos you think Sony is doing DD better? Be real.

Ninja Gaiden Black . . . again, an old game. Please don't tell me this will be one of those threads where I feel like I'm talking to a brick wall. As for TV and Movies, they're both doing it, but I'll admit Microsoft blazed the trail in that area but I'm obviously talking about digital distributed games. These are sophisticated HD video game consoles, people don't buy these systems to primarily play old games or watch tv/movies. They buy them to play cutting edge HD games and Sony is the one blazing the trail as far as bringing that experience to the digital download arena.

pay attention. he said "including ps1 c1assics" so his response was. what about ninja gaiden.

also why would i do that, if im gonna pay full price i want to get the box, the manual etc.

he also mentioned a bunch of arcade games which 360 does have + movies and tv shows.

the name of this thread should be "i can use up alot of my hdd space with games"

No, I hear you very clear, but please don't pretend that Sony is doing the consumer a favor by offering DD. This way they get to cut out the middleman and can gain more profit per game.

That is the only major difference but guess what? That is a HUGE FRIGGIN difference. The primary purpose of a PS3 or a 360 is to play actual PS3 or 360 games and the PS3 is the only system that is offering digital versions of that primary experience. Sony is doing the same thing with the PSP, but to an even greater extent offering many of it's best games (Jean D'arc, Loco Roco, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Wipeout Fusion, Ape Escape, etc.) for download.

What?! When the hell did I say Sony is doing anybody a favor? I never made any mention of this being good for the consumer or the industry. I simply pointed out that Microsoft talks about Digital Distribution as the future of gaming so much, oftentimes to discredit Blu-ray's victory over HD-DVD and yet Sony is the one pushing Digital Distribution of Video Games harder then Microsoft.

Well, you do have a point, the games are more important. But i think the reason MS started off going the TV/Movie DD route is because that idea has already taken off, and people would much rather rent a quick movie then go out and buy one at a store. Gaming on the other hand is different. Most people have no problem going out and buying games (and getting a hard copy) that can occupy them for a long time.

But read my first post, i did list some examples of how MS is making progress in that department. Another example is that they've been increasing the max size limit for the arcade games.

[QUOTE="hopesfall2own"][QUOTE="bez2083"]What about Xbox Originals? My Ninja Gaiden Black takes up 6GB on my HD. And if your going to talk about digital distribution, make sure to mention TV and Movies, because if you did, you would know that MS was WAY ahead of that curve before Sony. Don't pick and choose, state everything.dream431ca

Agreed. Xbox had the TV/movie/arcade distribution LAST gen and cows think Sony freaking invented DD on consoles cause they release 3 games.

dream431, read the post above yours.

I did. MS might have had it first, but Sony has surpassed MS when it comes to DD.

Be real.

Sony's movie and TV lineup is being increased every month as well, and you forgot that Sony releases full version, this gen games like Warhawk, Siren, Burnout Paradise...also full PSP games.

No i didn't forget, i mentioned them, note "glorified expansion packs and demos" :)

Then you're ignoring the facts and replacing them with things that make you feel better ;)

i deleted that, u refresh quick ;) But anyways, you can't place your bread and butter argument for Sony's DD with just talking about 4-5 full games available. That doesn't compare at all to the massive library Marketplace has. Some of the "arcade" games are full fledged as well, there's just no way you can say because of a few games sony is doing it better.

Oh you mean Playstation 2 had Xbox LIVE Marketplace on it? Ok then, now be quiet.

LOL wut?

Xbox had Marketplace..which is Digital Distribution. 360 had Xbox Originals on marketplace before PSN had their stuff. So quit acting like Sony is doing more DD than MS. Just quiet.

Sony is doing more...full version game downloads (this gen games, and last gen games). Sony is doing more than MS when it comes to DD on consoles.

*laughs* sorry but microsoft did it first, xbox live has more and better then psn and thats just a fact and it keeps geting more and better.

Warhawk was a psn game cause no one in they're right mind would have paid for the full original version of that game, as for that how many games are geting DD full games? last i checked i couldn't download mgs 4, when sony releases its games both DD and retail then you can talk till then microsoft is doing more, and better then sony in terms of DD.

No, I hear you very clear, but please don't pretend that Sony is doing the consumer a favor by offering DD. This way they get to cut out the middleman and can gain more profit per game.

Zerostatic0

No need to get upset, guy. I just took the following quote:

" "They buy them to play cutting edge HD games and Sony is the one blazing the trail as far as bringing that experience to the digital download arena."

As a way of you saying that Sony is doing their customers justice by offering this and "blaziing the trail" as you put it. If you didn't mean it that way, my bad.

Yes I do refresh quick :D

My point is the PS3 is the only console where you can download full version this gen games that are also avaliable at retailers on a disk. It gives people a choice. I'm not saying Sony is better for doing that, it's just a step towards what could happen with the next consoles.

Who's to say what a "full version this gen game" is? Just because it's in disk form? That's a stupid way to look at it imo. A game is a game no matter what. You can argue that a game like Braid is not comparable to a game like Crysis, but i would still want you to go into details other than which one has a disc copy.

Also, i mentioned these games in my first post, but if you take a look at Portal: Still Alive, Vigilante 8: Arcade, Phantasy Star Universe, The Maw, and WarWorld you'll see that these games can be "worthy" of a disc copy, but doesn't neccessarily mean that they NEED to have one. Although, for the record, Portal had a disc copy, and i'm sure the next one will too.

Thoughts?

Zerostatic0
Spoken like someone who doesn't know one thing about the overall picture. Look at the XBL marketplace as a whole and you'll see how massive the DD is right now. It's not simply about gaming, but movies and TV shows as well. The number of movies, and tv shows available through DD on the marketplace overshadows any weak offering that there is on PSN.

First of all your arguement is silly, (Digital Downloadable games only matter if there is a retail version, wtf?). Secondly, . .. Umm . . . Warhawk WAS available in retail as well as DD, and so was Gran Turismo 5 Prologue (and SOCOM: Confrontation will be the same.). Burnout Paradise is a retail game and that is also going to be available for download. Games like Tekken: Dark Resurrection, SIREN Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and the forthcoming Wipeout HD are ONLY available on PSN and I think those games are even more of a drastic step into the realm of Digital Distribution.

I bought Warhawk and GT5P via PSN and it was a good experience...

I don't know how retailers like it...... spitting in the face of the hand that feeds you is not the best idea....My only grip is if Sony is going to push full game DL's via PSN..and they know it will piss off their distribution..

Cut the consumers a break in price..The final cost to consumers utilizing DD is less expensive than using physical media....

Greedy bastards....

hello to this year: the fall XBL update will allow users to install their disc games to their hard drive
