You know what I say? A huge meh! to digital distribution. It's alright for smaller arcade experiences that are inexpensive, but when it comes to full fledged retail ****games, I'll take my case, instruction booklet, artwork, and disc. I don't dig paying the same price for a less expensive avenue of selling games.BioShockOwnz

Well I can agree with this. Also if I get tired of the game or I can always resell it later. Can't do that with DD.

Sony has a storage advantage this gen and they are not the ones pushing the boundaries. That honor belongs to steam and other PC apps that regularly have new releases of AAA games right form the beginning. XBLA was the first console digital distrobution service and PSN wouldnt exist otherwise. A few full sized game releases doesnt make them leaders in the that area at all. MS actually has more full sized games if you count XB originals.

You bring up a really good point.......How will DD effect distribution?.... not only at POS, but resale. Large retailers like Gamestop will get the crap end of the stick on both sides....

BINGO.

I'd like to at least be given something I can physically hold for paying full retail price. Instead, with digital distribution you get text that says "Thanks for your purchase" and that's about it.

Haha. Digital distribution. I don't really know what to say. I always like the idea of PSN delivering said games. But Xbox Live is just far beyond what the PSN has delivered even with Warhawk being available for download.

I think of all the good points I read so far, the one about resale issues is the biggest point to make.

DD is great and all, but if I am apying full price for something I cant even resale and i am only doing it for convenience, then I am screwing myself out of some money and M and Sony are making all of the profit...Not good.

What about Xbox Originals? My Ninja Gaiden Black takes up 6GB on my HD. And if your going to talk about digital distribution, make sure to mention TV and Movies, because if you did, you would know that MS was WAY ahead of that curve before Sony. Don't pick and choose, state everything.bez2083

Exactly! Ive been enjoying digital distribution on Live for years now, with much more content available on Live Marketplace then PSN!

Agreed. Xbox had the TV/movie/arcade distribution LAST gen and cows think Sony freaking invented DD on consoles cause they release 3 games.

dream431, read the post above yours.

I did. MS might have had it first, but Sony has surpassed MS when it comes to DD.

Wait, you think cuz Sony put a handful of full games on PSN, theyve surpased Live DD?! Unbelieveable how Sony sheeple think...

I dont think that's a fair conclusion really. Sony certainly push for bigger downloads, but microsoft are placing the most content out there for people to download. There are new arcade games to download every single week.

I think microsoft is just more conscious of the fact that not all of their users have hard drives, whereas sony dont have that problem. For microsoft, downloading full games isnt really an option this gen, though i'm sure it's something we'll be seeing next gen.

Oh you mean Playstation 2 had Xbox LIVE Marketplace on it? Ok then, now be quiet.

LOL wut?

Xbox had Marketplace..which is Digital Distribution. 360 had Xbox Originals on marketplace before PSN had their stuff. So quit acting like Sony is doing more DD than MS. Just quiet.

dude the Ps1 games were there long before the Xbox Originals

Xbox live is a great service but sony is gaining speed at an astronomical speed, look at the amount of full retail games available over the PSN now its close to what the 360 has

But i digress Steam is the ultimante DD program

Yeah, Sony really is leading the way in DD as far as consoles and I don't really expect that to change anytime soon. MS talks but you don't release a console without a standard HDD then talk about DD like it's your ace in the hole.

MS may have done DD first, but I think Sony are doing it better. In terms of games anyway. The ability to DL fairly large games like Warhawk, Ratchet, SOCOM, Siren etc is one of PSN's biggest advantages over Live. Sony just need to get the Movie Store released.

In all fairness, they are doing well releasing full games for DD, but why would you buy that when it's the same price (or probably cheaper) at a store? And the 360s hard drive (20gb, the most common one) isn't really big enough for full games. And MS is leading as far as arcade games, demos and movies/tv shows go. But all of these things have already been done on the PC, with services like Steam.

It's almost as if Microsoft didn't just release 4 AA+ download-only XBLA games, three of which are exclusive.

Where's the AAA content on PSN?

Im calling Bull^^^^ on this thread. Look at the PS Store, you have a couple online only games and a few overpriced Arcade games in WipeOut HD and GT Prologue ( a Demo). Compared to the 360s Marketplace that offers, TV Shows, Movies to rent, Xbox Originals and weekly arcade games. You can't even compare the 2 MS is doing such a better job and making much larger profit margins that the PS Store.

As if that compares to the amount of things that Microsoft was selling online way before Sony did? Because if that's what you care about, you're wrong side.

Sony was the first to distribute PS1 games and full retail games.

Microsoft was the first to distribute games, movies, demos, trailers, and television shows.

Which is more significant?

Well I can agree with this. Also if I get tired of the game or I can always resell it later. Can't do that with DD.

While you may not be able to right now, that is simply a matter of giving the user some control over the license for said content. I get tired of the game/movie, I transfer my license to somebody else via the internet, my copy no longer plays, the other person can now download and view the movie. Some of you are WAY too shortsighted, and obviously have no real world experience with differing forms of DD.

The big question is whether the producer of said content will allow you to transfer your license. They don't have to, and several such producers have been stating for years that one of their goals with DD is to prevent such trading/reselling. They lose a great deal of money from such activities.

Its the future. I dont like it either, no CE, no box or booklet. But in a couple of years, we will see this as the standard. Its already happening to music, and movies are going the same way. You and I are of a dying breed.

For all of Microsoft's talk about a digital distribution future, I find it wierd that Sony is the one that is actually pushing the barrier as far as digital distrubtion is concerned. I mean all the console manufacturers have their services where they sell smaller, simpler games and/or older games but Sony is the only one that is offering downloadable versions of big, modern games. As of right now you can download Warhawk, Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, Gran Turismo Prologue, Siren, Ratchet & Clank: Quest for Booty and by the end of this holiday season you can add Burnout Paradise, SOCOM: Confrontation, and Wipeout HD to that list. Hell, throw in the PSone c1assics and the typical downloadable games (i.e. Super Stardust HD, PixelJunk Eden, PixelJunk Monsters, Bionic Commando Rearmed, MegaMan 9, etc.) and the PS3 is the only system that I could see as even having a chance of fulfilling my gaming needs soley with it's downloadable content. Sony is doing the same thing with the PSP, but to an even greater extent offering many of it's best games (Jean D'arc, Loco Roco, Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror, Wipeout Fusion, Ape Escape, etc.) for download.

Thoughts?

Wow at all the people only reading the title and not the OP.

The TC never said that PSN had more or better DD to download than XBL. He didn't compare all the content in XBl to all the content in PSN he only said that Sony is the only console developer that has started to offering full retail current gen games that is available in stores for $60 on a disc to be downloaded from PSN to your PS3. XBL will probably do that soon but doesn't stop Sony from being the first to do it.

EDIT: That is of course if I understood him right.

have fun fitting all that on your hard drive.

ms does more movies than ps3, better and more arcade games, plus downloadable content like ps3, so they're about equal i'd say in the dl department.

Thoughts?

Good for Sony, except MS is always referring to media. Games will follow. Then again, media downloads on teh 360 were implemented much before Sony PS3 was even on the market... so if you want to talk in terms of "what" is being distributed, then MS was first for media and SOny for current gen games. If you want to talk about digital distribution of IP, then MS was first. (right behind the PC)

[QUOTE="BioShockOwnz"]You know what I say? A huge meh! to digital distribution. It's alright for smaller arcade experiences that are inexpensive, but when it comes to full fledged retail ****games, I'll take my case, instruction booklet, artwork, and disc. I don't dig paying the same price for a less expensive avenue of selling games.kenshinhimura16

Its the future. I dont like it either, no CE, no box or booklet. But in a couple of years, we will see this as the standard. Its already happening to music, and movies are going the same way. You and I are of a dying breed.

And I was hoping we'd switch the types of boxes we put our games in, like better jewel cases or something.

I don't think this harms the console market so much that they'll quit doing it though. :s

Or they'll have to invent a floppy disk (mini disc) like medium that can't be played on PCs.

we've argued this to death. DD is simply not possible on a grand scale. We'll see in 10 years if we have the infrastructure to handle a large scale, mainstreaming of digital distrubution but right now in the present it is completely impractical. The only reason its being done at all right now is because a very small percentage of consumers actually do it. If Sony were serious about DD then they wouldn't be gouging us over the digital copy of the game. If there weren't any infrastructure issues then a $50 dollar game would cost $30 or less because there are no overhead costs.

[QUOTE="hopesfall2own"] i deleted that, u refresh quick ;) But anyways, you can't place your bread and butter argument for Sony's DD with just talking about 4-5 full games available. That doesn't compare at all to the massive library Marketplace has. Some of the "arcade" games are full fledged as well, there's just no way you can say because of a few games sony is doing it better. dream431ca

Yes I do refresh quick :D

My point is the PS3 is the only console where you can download full version this gen games that are also avaliable at retailers on a disk. It gives people a choice. I'm not saying Sony is better for doing that, it's just a step towards what could happen with the next consoles.

Oh really, because I thought your arugment was that Sony is ahead of the curve in terms of digital distribution. "Sony is doing more than MS when it comes to DD on consoles. " And now you say that Sony is not necessarily better. Back-pedalling ftw.

I'm with you guys too. I'd hate to see hardcopies go the way of the dodo.

I see the OP's point, but I feel he's over-exaggerating it in order to paint it as some sort of advantage for PSN.

Yes, Sony sells current-generation big-budget titles on PSN while Microsoft does not. But it doesn't really make sense to use that as a barometer of who's doing more with digital distribution simply because, when you get right down to it, it's all just bits on a server. Microsoft could decide to sell triple-A current-gen titles over XBL tomorrow if it wanted, and nothing would stop them (except maybe the brick and mortar retailers.)

Instead, let's look at the implementation and execution of their respective digital distribution strategies. I believe when you look at key considerations such as ease of use (including ease-of-fulfilment) and rights management policies, Xbox Live offers the better deal for the consumer.

Thread = Epic Fail

Ummmm.... looks like someone doesn't have a PS3.

The PS Store has a video store now ( I thought everyone knew this? ).

they have like 15 shows... and not even complete seasons.

It's doesn't matter.... it's still there.

And FYI,they have full seasons to some shows like Prison Break ( season1-3 ) and etc.

The thing is with DD people are going to need bigger harddrives come next gen and its going to cost more to buy those bigger harddrives in those bigge consoles and its like buying a pc. I can't see myself buying a next gen console the second they are released because I willing to bet they will cost $500 plus and thats just too much. People only want to pay around $300 or $400...preferably $300 since thats what it normally costed for so long.
