Has a Generation defining game been released yet. I mean there was Mario, goldeneye, halo, half life2 etc. You know that one game that almost everyone played/wanted. It just feels like this generation has come up a little short, sure the games are better now but do they really have the same effect on people that the older ones did?

Umm, news flash, last years gamilng revenue brought in the largest income in history for games (not consoles), and this year is looking better.

I do miss the days though when the NES and SNES were awesome, but this gen so far has impressed me.

This generation is really good I think. It proves that console developers don't have to follow the linear graphics route. It's the crossroads for future generations to follow.

It is not the Snes era, but still a lot of fun. A great gen, indeed.

Super Mario Galaxy is the best game so far this gen. This game alone makes this generation worth it.

Disappointing?! I loved this gen! This gen was freakin' crazy!

Bioshock, Halo 3, MGS4, Gears of War, Oblivion, HL Ep. 2, GoW2 (not Gears, God), Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, TF2, CoD4, GTA4, etc!

And for the innovation people, theres Wii Sports, Guitar Hero, Rock Band, etc!

What do you want?

I think this gen is vastly superior to last gen on consoles.

PC i guess has some catching up to do with last gen. Games like Deus Ex, Half Life 2, Battlefield 2, UNreal 2k4, World of Warcraft(which was from last gen, but ofcourse will live forever) Civilizations 4, etc

But that doesn't mean PC has been bad this gen, its just unlike Consoles the PC was actually worth of the hype last gen. PS2 IMO wasn't as awesome as PS1, the N64 was way better than the gamecube. and to me the Wii is a slight improvement with the Nintendo 1st party versus the gamecube. and the XBOX was Halo, Halo 2, and Ninja Gaiden....I would have much rather enjoyed the saturn....Dreamcast was the only improvement last gen on consoles.

This gen 360 is better than XBOX by miles.

PS3 is a downgrade from the PS2 i guess, but still a good console(just not up to snuff with the playstation brand)

THe WIi is awesome from a Nintendo 1st party standpoint, but lack of horsepower and lack of other big games is annoying.

- Downloadable content. And to make matters worse: exclusive downloadable content.

- No major selling game system that has it all, like the PS2 was. The Xbox 360 has sold poorly and is barely gaining momentum 3 years after its release.

- No good RPGs, FFXIII is years late.

- No "must have" game like Final Fantasy VII, GTAIII, etc. etc.

- Most of the games are delayed, and not up to standards. Most are sequels.

- Everything is expensive and you get less.

Whats wrong with DLC? There seems to be alot of nice additions...

-I think the competition is better this gen. 360 offers games in a ton of genres. So from a game standpoint, there are clear leaders at this point with the PC and 360.

-um what? Mass Effect, The WItcher, Neverwinter Nights 2, Eternal Sonota, Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, etc all good RPGs.

-What? "must have" games Company of Heroes, Crysis, Halo 3, GTA 4, Call of Duty 4, The Orange Box, Super Mario Galaxy, Metal Gear Solid 4, Grand Theft Auto 4, Bioshock

-Halo 3- loaded with content
-GTA 4- loaded with content
-The ORANGE BOX- need i say more
-Elder Scrolls 4 Oblivion- Huge amount of gameplay
-Super Mario Galaxy- 120 stars worth of great platforming.

I mean can you atleast make a valid complaint against this gen?

It gives devs a reason to release a game half-finish or broken, and then use DLC or patching to fix it up later. If it's free then DLC is fine (as long as they also release it to retails or something) but the ones that cost money are horrible.

Yeah but there aren't that many "****cs." And the few there are are always delayed or something up with them. No video game console will come close to the amount of games the PS2 has.

I should've said JRPGs, which this generation has failed at.

Halo 3... sequel... GTA4... sequel... I mean it's really not that hard to take a game, upgrade it a little and release it. Where's the real revolutionary games? Where are the games that make a system worth $400-$600? I enjoyed GTA and Halo last generation on $200 systems, and they were revolutionary then.

This generation is like the last generation except it doesn't have the supporting cast. We get our typical Halo, GTA, Mario, Elder Scrolls.. but no little gems like Shadow of the Colossus, Katamari, Devil May Cry, etc. etc. (new ip wise).

I have to agree with the TC. This gen has seen some pretty good games, but nothing has really wow'd me like last gen. Seeing the graphics/gameplay of games like DMC, Halo and Skies of Arcadia blew me away last gen, but there's been nothing like that this time around, with perhaps the exception of Portal. It's just more of the same with a prettier coat of paint. Considering it's three years into this gen and I've only played one RPG that I consider really great (Mass Effect), yeah, I'm dissapointed.

I'm speaking strictly of consoles here. The PC has actually been rather good for me, as always.

I personally love this generation unlike no other before it. Right now I have a Wii60 combo, and each of the console have a lot of games that I like, and a lot more that I want to get. Then on top of that, there are a lot of great looking games for the DS and PSP. I personally have never been that attracted to the handhelds since the Gameboy, which I have but didn't care for as much as the consoles. But both of those handhelds look great to me, and I really want to try out the great looking games for each of them. And while I'm not as excited about it because of all the multi-plat games, there are some very good looking games on the PS3 that I would like to play, like MGS4 and LBP. And that's not even mentioning the Virtual Console/Wiiware games, Xbox Live Arcade games, and PSN games, as well as the Backwards Compatibility of each of the consoles and DS.

*sigh* I'm probably going to end up skipping next gen so that I can fully appreciate the generation.

I think there is a lot more depth in the top tier of games nowadays. I t makes just one hard to standout. But Gears, Metal Gear, and Mario galaxy all stand out to me.

By this time, last gen, we had a similar number of "unique" games as we do now. I did a blog about beliefs people as you have about a change in generation. A change in generation is just that. It doesnt imply an automatic response from developers. The best games last gen came from 2004 and up. Thats 4 years after it started.
