Do consoles even need higher than 30fps?

With the slow movements and turning with a controller, i cant see how you would even notice the difference as long as the fps remained steady at 30.

Yes, it makes a vast difference in certain games. And if your turning too slow up the sensitivity.

That's why a lot of people like CoD. It almost never runs at 60, but sure tries and you can feel the swift movement compared to other games.

It is true that lower framerates are a lot more tolerable with a controller. But i would still prefer 60 for all games.

Most Nintendo games are at 60 FPS and I love that they are at that framerate.

Also most racing games they should be at 60 FPS or higher.

Stable 30 fps is enough for a feeling of fluidity and many devs like to sacrifice the framerate for more detail but obviously 60 fps is better. I think the fps standard next-gen should also be increased (atleast the fps lock should be at 60 fps instead of 30).

There's a reason Call of Duty sells a billion dollars a game. People are spoiled by 60fps and don't even know it. That's why they complain about the aiming in other shooters being off but they can't explain why. Fighting, driving, sports, and hack and slash games are pretty much unplayable at anything other than 60fps. God of War 3 gets a free pass because you get to fight mountain sized Titans. Even with GoW3 it never dips below 40fps. The question is, should games be allowed to go below 30fps. Playing Crysis 2 at 20fps is pretty annoying.

Nah, most casuals(ie the majority of console gamers) can't even tell the difference between 30 and 60 FPS.

Thats false. Most human in general can tell the difference. They just wouldn't be able to tell you why, most think it's lag, when it's actually frames being dropped.

Of course. 30 FPS should be bare minimum, but 60 FPS should be the target. To say "should consoles need higher" implies that 30 FPS is some sort of maximum, when for most genres it's basically the baseline for playability - below which the frame-rate becomes noticeable even to an untrained eye. I can tolerate 30FPS just fine, but too many console games can't even achieve a steady 30FP. That's just bad programming/game design (whatever you want to call it). When optimizing a game if you can't get it to run a 30FPS it shouldn't be released, or at the very least certain other settings need to be adjusted to get it to run at least 30FPS before anything else.

Some games don't others are much better with a higher framerate, really depends on how fast the in-game movements are

30fps is enough for me, I couldn't tell you if the game was running at 60fps or 30fps just by playing it. I'd have to do a side-by-side comparison to tell, and even so I don't see the big difference that everyone claims is there.

Depends on the game. Some games actually get a cinematic feel from 30 FPS, and analog sticks lack precision anyways, so it's not a huge deal.

i wouldn't see this as being a standard, its basically up to the dev's, I honestly barely notice the difference between 60/30 fps, and games like BC2 i sort of like playing on 360 instead because it doesn't seem as fast.

COD MP is pretty much a constant 60fps. SP can get choppy though.

Yeah, if you have vision problems or have never witnessed 60+ fps in most of your games.

Yes, I played Bad Company 2 on 360 and on PC at 60FPS+, big difference, I can actually play better in 60FPS. It's so smooth and responsive it's unreal.

I bet that if you took a game running at a steady 30 fps and one running at 60fps the vast majority (not just casuals) wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

I've experienced everything from 25 average to 90 FPS on various PC games, 30 feels fine on consoles but I wouldn't complain about any higher.

Same here; I've played plenty of games at 60+ fps and I'm fine with 30 fps. Yet another tired old "you must not know any better" argument.

Don't care at all. As long as it's above 20, I really can't tell a difference at all between 60 and 30, and I have to think people are tricking themselves if they think they can. And that includes PC games, though I rarely play shooters on a PC anymore.

The vast majority of TVs don't go beyond 30 anyway, right?

Some games can do fine with 30FPS. I'm not completely sure, but I remember reading that UC2 and KZ2 play at 30 fps, and they were great games. Racing and fighting games need to be at 60 fps, though.

They're so 30FPS, no way PS3 could do 60FPS with those games, it couldn't do it with GOW3 for that matter.

Really? because 30fps with a mouse can feel choppy, especially in a shooter.
