When someone is in a store, choosing what system to buy, do they really care that there is a DLC available on the playstation network that lets you become the Joker in Batman? Do they care that there are new levels for portal available on the Xbox Live Marketplace? I have a feeling this would be the last thing on someone's mind when they are making a several hundred dollar purchasing decision, that is, if they even know that this content exists. When one purchases a system, they look at the products on the shelf that work with that system. It is important to have something that you can physically see and hold in your hand.

Moreover, does the average gamer even know that this content exists-- probably not. The problem is that downloadable content and downloadable games are not exactly mainstream, and really only resonates with people who already have the consoles the content is available for. What do you think sells more systems, downloadable content or games that come in a box?

There seems to be some confusion, so I am rephrasing: I want anyone reading this to find someone, anyone who made a purchasing decision on a console based on DLC or a downloadable game. The PSP Go doesn't count, because all of it's games are downloadable.

You used the Joker DLC as an example, and thats a game that sold closer to the 360 version than most PS3 games do (actually sold more in the second month). So obviously the answer is yes.

I think that people bought a PS3 that month because of the PS3 slim and needed a game to play with it. That game was batman. This doesn't answer my question. Has anyone ever bought a console because of a downloadable game? I doubt it. I seriously do.

Castle Crashers and Alien Hominid did influence me somewhat in picking up a 360, althought it was really for TOV and SO:TLH.

It's a both a blessing and a curse that they're going to port it over to PSN....have to buy it again.

 Your comparing a playable character with a few new moves to new levels, weapons, characters, music, vehicles.etc? Yeah, of course it doesn't. apparently a whole new story mode with new weapons, characters, weapons and what not don't appeal to gamers unless its on disk! what kind of joke is that?

The Wii's virtual console won me over because I love having so many retro games at my fingertips that I can play on a console. As for the other two, I do judge DLC since each system offers a different set of DLC and downloadable games that interest me. So yes, DLC is an important factor when I buy systems from this generation. With DLC, I get addtional content for my retail games and thousands more that I can download.

Why are people acting like DLC doesn't sell systems? If stuff like Blu-ray, Wifi, 1080p, and Netflix can sell systems, than why can't DLC since it has become a major factor in this generation's systems?

Are people so bitter over GTA IV's DLC that they are denouncing DLC as useless? I would say that GTA IV's DLC on the 360 was a major factor for it outselling the PS3 version. Say what you will, the fact remains that the 360 has gotten two additional GTA expansions that are as large as most full-fledged retail games. I'm willing to bet that some of the gamers who lacked a system when they picked up GTA IV choose the 360 so they could have access to the DLC.

Honesty, are people really so desperate for damage control that they use pathetic arguments like this?

If you are referring to Demon Souls, then the answer is yes. In fact, I can name an actual person who purchased a PS3 in order to play that game, and that person is Charles Onyett from IGN who explained that he bought a PS3 for Demon's Souls in this podcast.

My argument is not that DLC will never affect one's purchasing decision, but I would like to find someone who bought a system BECAUSE of DLC, especially DLC for a game which is over a year old, such as the new levels in portal. Also, do people even know of these DLC? Of course we do, the message board reading, informed gamers, but how many people outside of the informed actually know these products exist?

Well, you started this talk just now because of what The Ballad Of *** Tony is becoming too[If *** Tony didn't release im sure this topic won't be in existance]. Besides that, your still talking about a character with his own moves and not only that but you get to play him with the same levels that are already present in the game. And then comparing it with new levels from portal. Dude, new levels always win on a new character playable on the same old maps. The whole point of your argument is if a DLC/downloadable games sell a system and what im trying to say is when a DLC is as packed as GTA, Portal or any other game then yes, it does sell and the 360 seems to be doing an outstanding job at that department[Besides its on disk games and not to mention GTA: BOGT with Lost and damned are coming bundled together on disk:)] If a DLC has variety, quality & its playable then it'll sell a console no matter what point of view you look at it.

The only people who wouldn't know about DLC's are people who don't even have an internet. Simple as that.

If I can find one person with internet who doesn't know about DLC then I disprove your point. Case in point...

I don't think the average person knows that some (if any) multiplatform games have exclusive DLC... let alone have multiple platforms to play them.

If DLC affects a person's choice to purchase a system, than most likely they bought the system because of the DLC that may be offered on that system, so that argument is invalid. Numerous factors affect a person's choice of a system, and the same thing could be said for virtually any feature that appears on consoles.

And the DLC for GTA IV is well known since a big deal was made when Microsoft got the exclusive rights to it. When both LAD and BOGT get commercials on TV, than its safe to assume that most people know about it.
