Every gen, with the exception of 2D ones, I could look back and point out how ugly early-gen launch titles looked.

These were often the games employing a lot of effects, in order to appear to look good, but time didn't have a great effect on them. Making them appear dated, ugly even.

Some of the effects used last gen included grey/brown games with blur smeared everywhere.

Of course games have started to look a lot better throughout the gen, but what about the early gen graphical showcases, do they still hold up today?

All the games shown above still look good. I think most games in general look good these days. The shit performance on the consoles has been the big issue.

Nope. Ryse especially still looks top-tier visually and looks better than every game save for the huge AAA blockbusters from Sony/Ubisoft/EA etc.

Yeah I'm surprised especially at how well Ryse holds up, it truly is another ageless graphical showcase that Crytek has created.

Honestly can't wait to give this game a spin when my 4K TV arrives.

Problem with a lot of games releasing these days are the excess of post processing effects and TAA blurring the image.

No. Not only did Killzone SF and inFAMOUS SS give a very noticeable generational leap from PS3 to PS4 , they still look great and hold up pretty well.

I was amazed by the PS4 pro upgrade that infamous SS has received.

1080/60 or 1800 on a 4K TV. Looks so nice.

The consoles pretty much hit their peak on graphics since the beginning of this gen minus a few graphically touch ups it varies on cross gen games the most though. MK 11 is a big step up compared to 10 in facial animation. But on the other hand Watch Dogs 2 doesn't look any better then the first game and it's not even a cross gen game.

I think they hold up fine, though optimization does improve over course of the gen, these don't look ugly yet. But, let's see how we feel about them after getting our hands on next gen systems.

Personally, I think anything that looked good gen 6 onward still looks good. There are a fair number of Dreamcast games that still impress me visually. Maybe not from a technical standpoint, but artistically for sure.

I think the ray tracing helps a lot but the rest of the graphics looks okay. It's nothing spectacular.

Ryse is probably the best looking game of the generation. If you haven’t played it, get it cheap now. It’s not a bad game and it’s a visual treat.

They look fine - it's the shiny side of the diminishing returns in graphics technology advancement: 3D games are finally starting to age in the way 2D games did; as long as the artistry isn't ass, they'll stand up ok.

Killzone and Ryse still look good. But, they are 7 year old games. Watch Dogs was downgraded hard on release. You had to get a mod on PC called "TheWorse Mod" to make it look close to how it was demoed. The console versions were screwed.

Killzone >> Ryse >> watch dogs.

Killzone was quite stunning, it having a strong art direction helped a lot too. Don't love the lense flare though.

Ryse was great as well but personally its showing its age. Especially character faces, doesn't age well at all.

I actually like Watch Dogs world the most but it is open world and it is ubisoft. Lots of limitation and repetition.

Infamous Second Son was the first game I played this gen that really made me go, "Yep, this is the next generation of consoles. We're here."

Watch dogs on consoles barely looks better then a PS3 game. I remember a few months later Infamous SS came out and showed me what a open world game could look like on the PS4.

KZ: SF still looks great and Ryse Son of Rome with the X1X patch could debateable crack the top 10 best graphics this gen.

Watch_dogs lighting looks a bit flat now, but look at what a good lighting mod can do for it.

Yeah I wonder how the early graphical showcases will reflect back on some of the best looking games of this gen.

I'm excited to compare Halo Infinite and whatever Sony has in store for first/second party launch titles.

They all still look well. It’s the crappy performance that doesn’t allow those games to hold up.

They still look great today. holding up very well.

One of the great things about the modern approach to console development is that they are designed to be a lot more developer friendly and there is a lot less of "teh hidden power". developers spend less time trying to get some weird architecture to behave itself and more time just deciding how they want to use the resources available to them. so games shine from day one.

Generation 6 is the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era, right? If so, I agree. particularly if the games went for a clean look like Beyond Good and Evil, they tend to look good enough to not detract from the game.

There are games that still look good to this day from the 8/16 bit era so umm no, you could cut yourself on a polygon back in my day. Gamers are really spoiled by graphics these days as they generally look bloody phenomenal. Thus concludes my boomer opinion.

Yeah, that's gen 6. Speaking of, god I hope Beyond Good and Evil 2 actually gets released.

Ha! Yeah, and if the polygons didn't cut you, the Playstation d-pad would definitely give you blisters. Then they made that new fangled Dualshock with it's soft little thumb-sticks. Turned the next generation of gamers into pussies!

Nah, you're right. Games look better and better, but sometimes it's nice to look back and see how old games still hold up or appreciate how they looked for their time.

Good graphics are good, but bad graphics ain't so bad.

Agreed. It's very interesting to see what can be squeezed out of consoles throughout it's lifespan. Some end of gen titles look phenomenal compared to launch titles so I do get your point aye. Tlou2 visuals shouldn't be possible on 1.84 Tf.

Infamous second son with hdr and pro patch holds up almost as good as anything else detail wise.

Killzone looks pretty damn detailed as well, just needs higher resolution.

I feel that AC: Unity could use a patch too for Ps4 pro and Xbox One X. That game looks fantastic on PC at 1080/60 or 4k

There's hardly a difference between the beginning on this generation and it's upcoming end in the majority of games. Lots of smoke and mirror techniques used just like last generation.

You can't expect anything better graphically after a couple years into a console generation.

This is probably the first generation where the launch titles hold up graphically across the board. All we really got was HDR patches.

Watch Dogs and Killzone Shadowfall look somewhat dated but Ryse still looks pretty damn good. The only thing I'd complain about in the style of early graphical showcases this gen is that they overkilled on particle effects to the point you'd think they were Nvidia physx demos.

You should try AC: Unity in 4K man, that game looks soooo good. Like the assets are so much better and more detailed in that game than even Origins or Odyssey. It feels like it was made for PC first.

I get about 140fps maxed out at 1080p. I wonder what FPS I'd get at 4K :)

Yeah, that was supposed to come in May.

I'm not sure about it anymore. Could be delayed, could be cancelled... No idea :(

edit: Just got word from the best tech website on the internet that it's coming out in June.

**** yeah, so hyped!!!
