the main purpose of a videogame is to entertain?
With this in mind, why do we always have to talk about graphics?

Let's see what Wikipedia says:

"An entertainment is any activity which provides a diversion or permits people to amuse themselves in their leisure time."

So, do we still play games cause they amuse us, or it's all about the graphics?

- Why do we rarely talk about how good a game is, instead of focusing on its visual aspect?

I don't know you guys, but I miss the good old times, when the games were nothing than a bunch of pixel, but we did have a lot of fun.

It feels like that we've all become videojudgers rather than videogamers.

It's not all about the graphics, but graphics can help a game be more entertaining.

Why do we rarely talk about how good a game is, instead of focusing on its visual aspect?aia89

We don't.

That's simply not the case, even in System Wars. And in System Wars, talking about graphics more is even justified. We're here to argue about games, so issues that are purely matters of opinion, like how entertaining a game is, don't interest us as much as largely objective subjects, like graphics.

I like both. I have fun with games these days but I agree that games used to be funner before. Although games this generation can surpass by mixing both fun rgameplay and graphics.

You mean the good old days before internet? If you want that go to E Bay and get a used NES. Game play is better than ever. I played some Halo on a friends Xbox and loved it. Checked out a PS3 and now can't decide what to get. Only reason I'm getting a new console is my Gamecube doesn't fill my screen on my new tv. Some people are more interisted in graphics and that's their choice. The key to your happiness would be just enjoy the game and don't worry what others say, it's just a thread.

That's a good point.

My opinion is that in the 2D era people would not think too much about the graphics, because they were way too distant from realism.
But now with the 3D getting closer and closer to something that we can compare with reality ( i.e. trees, people etc.. ) we do tend to compare what we see in screen with the actual object, person or animal. And it's easy to turn up our nose when we see something that it's not represented well in game, for instance a character's hand that looks fake, we notice it and we don't like it, because we do know how hands are supposed to look. But that's the mistake we make, comparing the videogame with reality, and it's not only our fault, but also those developers' who are desperately trying to imitate reality in all its aspects. Impossible. And even worse when devs care a lot about the graphical aspect, often to the detriment of gameplay.
I also used to criticize graphical aspects a lot, but then I realized that that's stupid, so I try playing without caring about flaws, bugs and so on, and while before I always wanted to play those super-graphics games, now I only play the games that get my attention, in terms of gameplay, story, entertainment.
Graphics are really the last thing. They're a nice bonus, if all the other elements are present.

Graphics are part of the entertainment. :|

Without graphics, we would just be playing a bunch of text adventures (not that there is anything wrong with them). Some developers want to be able to have a way to fully realize their artistic and creative vision and render it in the best ways possible. Make it so believable that you can nary tell the difference between reality and the game, and wonder where on Earth that fictional world might actually be.

Just because System Wars didn't exist in the '80s and '90s doesn't mean people didn't argue about graphics back then, sonny. ;)

You are right, but some people cannot be happy without knowing their purchase has satisfied other people as well.

It kind of has to do with trying not to be excluded out of the gaming community. Some people do not want to be left out, so they take it on themselves to become kings or judges in order to tell the community what passes and what fails on a numerical scale. This also includes graphics, which is more interesting to discuss rather than who enjoyed what. The problem there is that they do not understand opinions =/= fact, so there are a lot of arguments and confusion during a discussion of a game.

Graphics are important because they can provide an essential amount of depth to a game, but it is not solely the only thing that makes a game. If the graphics of a game are discussed heavily, doesn't that mean the game would have had to be enjoyable to merit for discussion in the first place?

that's true, but the graphics arguments were nowhere near what we see nowadays, with games being analyzed at the microscope. "because in the ps3 version Batman has a lager penis come on!

before you could ALSO argue about the graphics, yes, but NOW?

There is a difference between a bunch of 10-12 year-old flinging stones at each other about which game is "better looking" and a bunch of older teenagers/adults debating which game's look better on a technical level.

Do you happen to read every thread in System Wars, every single hour of every single day... or are you just generalizing that there are no other threads than graphics arguments?

Dude you realize that videojudging is also an entertainment, you even researched for the meaning and still you don't get it. I dont know where people get the idea that entertainment is only fun. I don't know where people get the idea that fun is only easy and not complicated or only action oriented, and/or other close minded stuff like that. I don't know where people get the idea that people only care for graphics since 3D.

I had a few of those fights as well, but more often than not, it boiled down to the ever-popular "Sonic vs. Mario" argument.

You're right, nowadays there are more adults playing videogames, hence the "technical talking". I'm not saying that there are only threads about which-game-looks-better-than-bla, but not only here, but throughout the web, you can see that there is a tendency for people to talk about graphical aspects, sometimes exasperating this factor. ( the microscope thing )

well, yes. you can amuse yourself by videojudging. you got me there. but ppl do care about graphics more than before. as someone else said, if you see a tree made in 2D and another one in 3D, you have a different approach of judging. the one made in 3D makes you think of a real tree, therefore you are likely to find a lot of flaws. the 2D one doesn't make you think of reality, but rather of a drawing. there is a difference.

Show me a game that couldn't be improved by better graphics. They are not the be all and end all of games by any means but eye candy cannot be discounted either.
