but this applies to everything...what if all companies/manufacturers stopped working on new products / releasing new products, what would happen ??

reality is that no matter how bad economy is, many (MANY) people will still be interested and find ways in buying new products, be it a console, new TV, home appliances, furniture, mobile phone, car etc etc..

No, but the graphics whores do.

NVIDIATI

Graphics loving aside, things like frames per second, number of AI on screen, complexity of AI and Physics, different things aside from visuals that can change the gameplay. Though visuals can also change the experience too.

Exactly, I hate how some console gamers tend to ignore that more powerful tech means more than just better graphics. It also means bigger and/or more complex games. :(

I want a new Nintendo system in 2-3 years. Refined controler, HD graphics, upgraded online and Pokemon MMO.

No choice in console = no competition+less motivation to pump out incentives(better games, technologies etc)+higher prices on everything. Yes, we need three consoles.

I think Nintendo may be first out of the gate next gen, or if Kinect fails miserably--which it likely will--then Microsoft. However, even though I'd like to see new consoles, I'm also doing so in the respect of price drops of current gen systems. I'm still yet to buy a wii, and if the next Nintendo console isn't BC, then I'd still like to have one for some of the classics on the console--plus it doubles as a backup gamecube.

i would expect that nintendo would releas e a new console around 2013 with microsoft releasing in the same year or 2014, then ps4 released about the same time as the new xbox or less than a year afterwards

With all the plans and rumors of the PS4, the Xbox 720, and the Wii 2/HD, and how bad the recession currently is, do we REALLY need another three 400-600 dollar consoles?

UACmarine208
YES i wanna pick the best imo and buy only 1 and come to system wars to say how much the other 2 suck... and i bet it will be called Xbox4Live :P

Yes we do so consoles can catch up to PCs. To a PC gamer it feels that we are in a three legged race with a fat retarded kid who cant keep up.

You do know when they release the console, PCs will be ahead again by a year or so.

Sure why not. I have about $250 of play money every month, so to me new consoles wouldn't be too bad. But most people don't seem to want new consoles, so I think we should wait. Besides, I haven't had my DS, PSP, or PS3 for very long. And I just bought a Wii yesterday. I guess I need to get more out of this generation first. Kinda torn, it would be nice to have new ones, but really, I haven't been part of this gen for long, so maybe it's a good idea to wait a few years.

The tech is obviously dated. Graphics and general system capabilities are fairly limited. That said, there are still PS1 and PS2 games I'm playing through right now. A focus on games over technology for a year or two wouldn't be so bad.

gaming is a luxury so yes. Current Gen consoles are also holding Some developers back in terms of tech and visuals so id say its time for the next consoles to come out already, so we can all move on. Howver sony did say they were workingon the next system. I would expect 2012 or 2013.

All we need is one Nintendo console for the younger generation, I grew up on Nintendo, they're perfect for children to get into gaming, perfect themes, some really good games for them. And then a Sony console for everyone else. MS really is just wasting all our time, I really hope they step out next gen.

Well, I usually buy systems once they have several interessting löooking titles or one must have (NIS game in my case), which usually takes a year. So yeah, i'll be perfectly fine to buy new systems in about 2 years, they show their age and I actually bought a full HD Tv to play full HD games, can't stand 720p anymore xD I want detailed 1080p games in 3D with at least 60Hz per eye

even though i have owned all 3 consoles for the past 2 gens.... next gen ill probably just be sticking with a 360.

though im ready for a new console right now, as long as its backwards compatible.

The real big question for me is if Sony's starting price next time will be over $400. I would hope they learned their mistake this time around.

I'm sure the PS4 will kick off with a bang releasing along side Gran Turismo 5 as a launch title.

Mystic-G

doesnt the price go up everytime a new gen console comes out? the hardware is more highteck so the price will be even more then it was this gen. how much was the ps2 on release?

All you need is a gaming PC and a PS3. Perhaps a Wii as well. You can skip on the 360.

I don't think we will see that next-gen simply because this gen will have lasted longer then previous gens so you can expect a similar jump in graphics but without an increase of price.

ExESGO

You do know when they release the console, PCs will be ahead again by a year or so.

What makes you say that? The next set of consoles is going to be a HUGE leap over what we currently see. Games like Crysis won't even look impressive anymore. Sure the resolution on pcs will always be higher, but 1080p is a fair resolution--which is why the hd/blu ray settled on it. You also forget that as these consoles get more technically advanced, they are more capable at producing pc-like games. This means that even more next gen than this one, that the games will be console first/pc second. The money is in the consoles. It almost won't make sense for devs to stick to pcs anymore.

All we need is one Nintendo console for the younger generation, I grew up on Nintendo, they're perfect for children to get into gaming, perfect themes, some really good games for them. I can't help but agree with this. While I was particular to the original xbox, MS this gen has sort of lost my interest. I prefered the way xbox live was set up last gen, and I don't like the fact that I can't organize the front end of the xbox system. It's almost as if they are forcing the ads down our throats for a paid service. Why the heck can't I just place my most used links like netflix/game/music in one area?

I changed my mind. I hope we don't see new consoles until 2025. By that time we should all have large libraries and many years of worthy games in our collections. Then we may finally move on.

No. But, like it or not, at some point we are going to get three new consoles. However this generation seems like it's shaping up to be the longest, so while three new consoles are coming, they're probably not going to get here for a while.

It's gonna be a couple years before any of them drop anyhow. By the time they hit the market I may not be ready for 3 new systems, but I bet I'll be ready for one, and slowly acquire the others.

What rumors? The only rumors I've heard is that Nintendo will be releasing a new console in the next year or so.... I've heard zero talk of a follow up to the 360 and PS3 coming any time soon, especially with Move and Kinect right around the corner and developers now truly turning out some great work across the board.

No. Give me another.. 3 years. Atleast. That'd be good. I haven't even got all the games I want (that are currently out). Graphics are good enough, and so is the innovation.

And I only have one console and I'm still behind in what games i have.

And then considering that the 3DS is coming out soon.

Definitely don't have the money for another console on top of the 3DS.

Like I've said many times, there isn't a big enough technological gap to logically build a new system right now. I think the biggest difference would be the capability to put in a PPU for better physics, because right now thats the only large difference between console and PC.

Not yet. It seems like the software is steadily pushing the hardware of each system, and the graphics look impressive enough for me. Granted I'll buy the next wave of consoles , but I'm in no hurry for that time to come. I hope each company invests in the next gen console race, because I like having the competition, and each seem to offer different experiences. I wonder what the specs will be like? They are probably already working on the next Xbox, and I bet Microsoft already partnered up with some chip manufacturer. Maybe Doritoes?Lol

I don't need a new console yet. That's not something I plan to be thinking about for at least another 2 years. However, console graphics are going to be looking a bit long in the tooth by then. Game graphics are fine for right now, but as always there will be big improvements with the next generation of consoles. The biggest quantum leap in terms of graphics would undoubtedly be the introduction of realtime ray-traced lighting, but that's something that we're still a ways off from. Eventually we always get to the point where developers have squeezed every last ounce of juice out of the current hardware, and somewhere there's a new video processor that makes it look like a dinosaur. My brother's new PC is quite awe inspiring when it gets Crysis or SC2 up and running at full spec, so I've little doubt that a few years from now we'll be seeing some pretty remarkable stuff from Sony, MS and Nintendo. It might not be soon, but it will be eventually.

I would rather all three companies wait a few years. Let the tech be as good as possible before release and let this gen ferment nicely. I just hope no one jumps the gun on next gen forcing the other companies into it too soon, thus making us all lose.
