Poll Do we still think there will be a new generation of Microsoft Xbox hardware in 2027? (35 votes)

Ye 71%
No 29%

Nintendo is launching Switch 2 more expensive than people thought, preorders have been delayed, and the prices could go up. Their games are also increasing in price.

Some people thought Microsoft would be launching hardware in 2026 or 2027. Does anyone still think this would happen? Microsoft wants to push AI features, will they need the largest technical leap for Xbox to achieve this or will they backport some of their ideas to the current hardware to achieve their vision?

Another option is Microsoft could just update their current consoles to run PC software if the next generation is delayed, and just launch a handheld. Does this seem realistic to anyone?

Or are the problems with the economy just a speed bump that will sort themselves out by the time it's ready to launch, and people will be equipped to deal the fluctuating economy?

I dunno with the US being Microsoft's biggest market and and we have Trump's stupid tariffs, I think that might change their plans. I thought it was totally plausible it could happen around then, now I dunno. We'll see.

I am not sure how the Switch 2 changes their plans. It is not like they are unaware of Nintendo's plans.

Yes, but they'll be dropping the physical format.

I don't see any point in a new xbox if there are no exclusives, console or otherwise

People are just going to buy a PlayStation to have access to everything

PS doesn’t have exclusive games. People are just going to buy a PC to have access to everything.

Seems like a PS6 is redundant now with Sony going 3rd party.

and the next Xbox console is rumored to be a Windows-based PC..

it's still all speculation but, with that one move, all the narratives about "exclusives" get turned upside down..

Phil Spencer said this many times, yes there will be a next-gen console somewhere in 2027. (Same for Sony's PS6)

I think since the Xbox was fully approved and costed all the way up the chain before the issues with the economy started then it's possible their plans might have to be altered or pushed back.

I can see a scenario where the new console and second Xbox handheld are delayed a bit, but they introduce some of the features on the current gen console such as adding support for Win32 software like Steam and other stores, which could help with the transition and be a positive move for their base. They could also put some more console tie-ins behind the handheld coming out this year such as supporting some of the 360 and OG generation console games with BC, they already have the emulators written for that which they use on the Xbox One and Series.

Probably not. They'll just stick some Xbox stickers on a low/mid range PC and call it a day.

Not a traditional home console as XS is today. Not anymore. They've quit. And whatever shit next will be, it will sell much worse than XS

Hasn't it been confirmed as coming in 2027? Assuming no delays.

@lundy86_4: So far that 2027 date is just rumors from Windows Central and I don't think it was ever stated by Microsoft

I'm guessing it's going to be streaming or some cloud-based thing they jump to. Just a guess, though.

This kind of seems like a no-brainer, to be honest.

Most people aren't like the physical-media diehards on here, and if going without physical format lowers production costs and speeds up distribution, while essentially changing nothing for the bulk of consumers out there, why wouldn't you do this?

Wouldn't that be crazy, if herms were using DLSS and frame gen on streamed video if that's the only way to play the new games from Xbox studios...

I think they will have some kind of hardware even if it is a rebranded device from ASUS or a rebranded Surface. Or maybe the 3DO thing will work out for Microsoft.

Who knows. They can't really estimate production costs or unit costs because of how volatile the market is at the moment.

Sony and Microsoft could learn from Nintendo's experience and hold their next systems back a few years while waiting for things to settle. Or they could take a gamble and release earlier, potentially risking massive production cost blow-outs if tariffs increase.

Either way, I doubt the next Xbox and Playstation will be untouched by what's happening in the US right now.

Don't know. I've never cared for any hardware from Microsoft (a few controllers aside), and that will continue.

Short of some major shake up yes, although with the rise of the handheld PC's and increasing PC uptake I wouldn't be shocked to see slower uptake of the consoles as more users migrate to a Desktop/Handheld setup centred around PC as the hub.

I think they'll release new hardware, but it probably won't be a console in the traditional sense. It might be something more like a streaming device or portable PC.

Very likely a new higher end console and ending support for the S, plus also the rumored handheld.
