God, everywhere I look the media are going crazy about motion sensative controls, touch screens and other fancy control systems. However, I can't help but feel, is it needed?

For example, the whole world is going mad for touch screens. In the context of a phone it works quite well, but it scares me when I see MS talking about new computers based almost entirely around touching. It seems to me that things that used to take a single mouse click or a small movement of the wrist, now require me to throw my hands around like a deranged monkey.

The Wii is the obvious example. What used to be accomplished with a few quick button presses now requires the aforementioned monkey man approach.

And even the PS3 is in on it, with the bloody sixaxis controllers. No longer can I plant a bomb by pressing "o", I have to turn the controller to the right, click R1/L1, turn to the left, press R1/L1... IS THIS SUPPOSED TO BE FUN?? Am I supposed to be impressed???

Please, for the love of god... if it aint broke, don't fix it!

Oh, and if anyone says the Wii uses motion controls brilliantly, I would encourage you to go and play Tomb Raider and attempt to perform the legendary ""Adrenaline Dodge"- never have I got so annoyed with a game

I don't see what the problem is, as long as one company is providing tradition while another is trying to do something different. Diversity is a good thing, and brings more people the hobby.

it just feels like people are so preoccupied with being advance, they forget whether it is actually practical and will make our lives easier.

Don't know about the PS3 but I like the Wii's motion controls. It's not needed but, in my opinion, it's pretty fun and there's nothing wrong with fun.

D-pad wasnt broke but Nintendo Implimented Analog sticks. The Joystick was never broke but Nintendo brought in the D-pad controller. Buttons on the front of controller where never broke but Nintendo brought on out Side buttons. The Wire was never broke but out came wireless controllers. If everyone had your mentality we'd still be in the dark ages playing pong with 2 button Joystick.

People are just experimenting. True, some of these newer methods of using old ideas (such as the touch screen computer) sound ridiculous, and if it turns out bad it will be forgotten. On the other hand, if it's a success and makes computers more accessible, then it will positively influence our society for years, if not longer.

So, isn't it worth risking a few failures to improve our lifestyle?

If it's fine tuned and works well, then I say go for it. Right now, in its early stages, there are quite a few flaws with motion controls with many games. The problem is that developers can't fully use it, and end up making a broken game. But the industry definitely needs some innovation, and I think in 5-10 years, motion controls will be fully functional on consoles (I still see PC sticking to M/KB).

Although I agree that computers are a bit over the top when it comes to touch but I think that the I-pod and Wii have executed it very well. Apps on the I-pod that are motion controlled are appropriate and although the Wii DOES have games that POORLY execute the controls ( I haven't bought any yet so I can't name any) and it CAN be tedious to always have to sit up right to play a video game (try playing it laying down) games like Bully and NMH aren't over excessive when it comes to motion. it's just right. I have no problem with motion or some touchscreens (Computer+ Touch= FAIL).

I personally would rather see a balance between them than having the whole game based off of some weird control scheme. Like, there are lots of DS games that use the touch screen for map navigation, stats, status, inventory, or w/e. I like the ease of use of the touch screen to do stuff while using the D-Pad and buttons to actually control the game.

I do. The problem with the Wii isn't the fact that it has motion controls. The problem is that most developers implement them extremely poorly, the WAY behind hardware and the lack of good games on the console. When the idea is implemented well, you get awesome stuff like Zack & Wiki and WarioWare: Smooth Moves, which give you a sort of hands-on interaction with stuff that's impossible on any other platform, and Metroid Prime 3 and Medal of Honor: Heroes 2, which give you awesome controls for a more traditional game. The idea is great, and implemented well would be awesome. The problem is with the Wii itself, not the concept.

Sure, motion controls aren't necessary. The other option is to control games the exact same way for the rest of time.

Most of the good evolution of tech jokes have been made, so I'll not go there. Innovation is always a process. Things never work just right the first time. The Wii motion controls work for some games, and not well for others, and feel tacked on in many. Just give it a few years. I realize that not every wants to raise their arms to play games, but that is what the old style controllers are for.

You know, we played games before the mouse ... some people didn't want that new-fangled thing.

Wonder where they are ...

----

Well implemented Wii controls are far better than other current controllers.

Poorly designed controls are poorly designed controls/games. Just because some people tack on unnecessary waggle or idiotic controls just places them in a category of failed games stretching back more than two decades.

Can't play World of Goo without the pointer, PES soccer controls best with the Wii [pointer/etc], Boom Blox needs the Wiimote. Nevermind the games that don't try to add motion where it isn't needed [note, you can play SSBB on an older ****controller - as they didn't force motion when it wasn't useful there].

I'm for the largest variety of controls, so the largest variety of games can be properly served by intelligent control implementation.

If wii motion plus can implement some of the ideas that developers have been trying to accomplish with the current wii controller, I think motion controls are the way of the future for action games

There will always be conservatives that hate on anything that's new, and prefer the good old fashioned way to do things. Technological advances and progress exist to make our lives easier, hence why there are cellphones and computers today that would've been unheard of 50 years ago. Face it, times are changing and we have to adapt to it.
