Do you buy into the "cinematic" frame rate and letterboxing fad?

If it's just mere PR....then it really shouldn't be a major concern for a thread....I guess it's just that it's a known hermit making the thread that makes it suspect.

The fact that PC can mod a game to get rid of this stuff...it shouldn't really be a topic for them. Again...can't fault, considering how the hermits are here, for thinking this is just an lame attempt to try and make consoles in a negative light.

Developers and publishers are terrified to say anything negative about a particular console, so they explain away shortcomings in their games due to technical limitations as intended features.

The whole "30FPS is more cinematic" argument can be ended with the simple fact that movies don't take direct input from a user, and blurring can be realistically applied to frames in a movie to create the illusion of fluid motion. Neither of these are true for games - they take direct input from a user, and blurring cannot be applied realistically because camera movement is based on user input, so any blurring applied looks rough. Not to mention 30FPS doesn't leave much (or any) headroom for framerate drops because anything lower and you're able to discern the individual frames and the illusion of motion is lost.

I don't think anyone needs an explanation as to why having two black bars on either side of your screen doesn't add to the experience in any way. It's frankly rather insulting they think anyone would fall for that.

Not only letter boxing my friend, but the actual PR bullshit that's been going on lately. If developers would just admit that the hardware can't take it, it would be fine for gamers, but lying is not.

Back on topic... The devs of the order 1886 might have just ruined this gen by coining the garbage "cinematic" excuse, it's really a sad day when developers are favouring visuals over gameplay, even sadder that there's gamers who agree with them...

Right, so one game is out, with one coming out in a few months that will use that feature. So 2 all in all. And somehow that is a fad.

No, ofc it's bs. The fact that even 9% here voted yes is laughable. I don't think it's wrong for devs to target 30 fps for certain genres, since they can push for better graphics but they shouldn't lie and say it's because they want their game to be more cinematic.

The Order is the first heavy compute game on the system and the trying to uses 4xmsaa if it wants a steady framerate with that kind of fidelity you got to cut some corners hence blackbars less rendering on screen .............and please don't say well its 2 40 ratio blah blah blah when none of your tvs are native to that ratio.

Didn't get a wide screen TV so I can have black bars on my TV. Thank god for Nintendo. FPS over 1080p any day of the week.

I was going to say this but expected movie buffs to point out movies of a certain aspect ratio will show black bars on home cinema because that's how they are meant to be. I hate that as well. Black bars in videogames AND movies can f*** off is my considered opinion.

It's stupid, and unnecessary. The Evil Within is a better game at 60 faps, and would have been better with a less obnoxious letterbox.

Mikami made a huge mistake with Evil Within, this whole "artistic vision" has done more harm than good, his work of art has caused motion sickness to plenty of people, videogames are art indeed, but they are also interactive art, stop forcing people to see things in only a certain framerate or a certain FoV, you are a game's producer not a movie director...

Honestly, all these devs would save a lot of their dignity if they simply said: we compromised the framerate to favor the visuals

Simple as that, instead they insist on pushing this stupid buzzword hoping that people will eat it up and then, they will have the perfect excuse to be lazy with the gameplay

This is why indies will always be the innovators in this industry

People are looking too far into this cinematic crap. The devs sacrifice framerate among other things, but thanks to that they can improve graphics and other effects. So the cinematic feel is improved but they aren't able to hit 60fps. Things like letterboxing don't give it a more cinematic feel, but it allows them to improve in areas they wouldn't be able to by cutting back in other areas.

Not all cinematic games are doing this, Uncharted 4 is targeting 60fps.

This is the kind of trolling System Wars needs.

No they are talking out of their rectum, they are doing it to lower the computational requirement to generate a number of frame per second.

Why would you want to see less of the game on-screen? This has already proven to be a recent problem in regards to environment visibility with The Evil Within, especially when anything is above or below your character.
