Some of them could've sold disk only because they wanted to keep the box for collecting purposes.

I'm not anal retentive when it comes to taking care of my stuff, but it's pretty effortless to keep games looking brand new, just follow some basic steps like always keep games in the case when they're not in the console, which is easy enough to do, some people leave there's out and that baffles me. Also, knowing how to handle a disc to keep finger prints off of them is not hard, yet people fail that basic task a lot. It's not difficult to avoid touching the shiny side, yet some people somehow manage it. It's basic, hand over the label side, finger goes in center hole with other fingers at the edge of the disc over the top, there should be no reason the finger should touch the data side or even under it for that matter... yet some numb-nut morons manage to.
Just those two basic things, keep them in the case and handle them right, that's all it takes me to keep them looking as new as the day I get them. I keep them on a bookshelf with other games in alphabetical order and separated by system. People take extra steps like dusting and no smoking and that to me goes to far, I smoke around my stuff nothing happens. Games still look fine. Nobody has ever told me my games smell like smoke.
I take care of them. Well... in the case that I just don't mess with the discs, not so much actually cleaning them and stuff. Normally that's enough.
For boxes I keep them good and don't screw with them either. Instruction books and the other slips are normally in the boxes but every once in a while, especially for the older games, the books wouldn't be in the box but in some drawer or something. Loved reading them as a kid, so its no wonder they are out and about at times.
I was looking online for games on ebay from being board and found a pretty decent percentage of games were disc only. That means at one point, the owners lost the case and manuals.
Being a gamer for nearly three decades, and I've got to say that I find it difficult to understand how you would lose the box to a game.
Do you keep good care of your games? Do you keep them in the box or in some other disc holder? What do you think when you see game discs left laying around when you go to a friend's home?
Some people move around a lot. Perhaps they kept their games in a CD binder.
As for manuals........ No real gamer reads manuals. ;)
"Wait a minute. There's a cloak in Crysis? I didn't know that. Oh. It's got other powers too?"
Sure do. I'm a little obsessive on how my discs, be it games, DVD's, music, whatever, are taken care of.
I always keep my games with their box and manual. I only have a few games that don't have them because they were rarer games and the only way I could get them at a decent price was cartridge only (DS games) or disc and case only. I won't buy a disc game that is disc only.
I take exceptionally good care of my games. I never leave the disc in the console when it's turned off, I NEVER grab a disc on either of the flat sides (like other people I know do), I never set the disc down on its silver side, I never stack discs, I always grab the game case by the lower OR upper sides, so that I don't get any fingerprints on the front, back, or side-logo. I always stack the cases so that they won't bed or indent at all.
If I drop a case by accident, I freak the hell out.
A couple weeks ago, someone in my family decided to set their cup of soda on top of my Sleeping Dogs case. It left a circle imprint, damn I was irritated.
What's wrong with keeping the disc in the system when it's turned off?
I used to do it to DVD players all the time, and it fucked it up. Made it freeze up all the time.
That might be due to moving the player around with discs in them. Yeah I'd definitely remove discs before moving a system around, but if it just sits there I don't think it'll affect the disc negatively. I leave discs in my systems all the time and they're still mint.
Looking back at some of my collection of PC games....... The boxes and CD jewel cases of 80's, 90's, and early 2000's games are long gone. However, I still have the manuals. I put the manuals in a carton box inside my desk. The CD and DVD games are in a Case Logic disc album along with handwritten CD keys (if any).
After 2004, I started keeping CD jewel and DVD cases again although manuals have become mostly digital (in .pdf format). Now that most PC games are just Steam/Origin/Uplay games on disc for quicker installs, I may go back to discarding the cases once more. The cases from those are also starting to pile up. There's really no purpose to the discs once the game is installed.
For consoles, overcrowding isn't a problem because I buy only a couple handfuls of exclusives every generation.
Some people don't care about their stuff, they are often screw-ups in life.
I always take care of my physical games, of course, none of my discs are scratched apart from DVDs by light scratches - simply by rubbing cloth on it! Pretty normal, I'd say.
Yes I do. I hate it when I see people throwing discs around on a table, sometimes stacking them on top of each other, using them as coasters and such. Then they get mad when the disc fucks up on them.
you should stop associating yourself with these ppl
Yup, especially now when they are in disc form...& yea I get pretty anal, I hate it when store uses cheap pricing sticker that's leaves a mark after removal. If I buy a game on launch day, I expect it in shrink wrap...& I will request it, if the store can't provide it, I'll go elsewhere. :P

I once let my cousin (who smokes) borrow one of my games.
It came back smelling straight-up like cigarette smoke. Horrible.

lol. The worst offender was a former boss I had. How people like that end up in powerful positions is beyond me.
Mine usually look new and I keep them in their original case. I refuse digital downloads for consoles as they are usually more expensive, and you can't trade in. A smack in the face. I saved you shipping, packaging, etc, and you charge me more for a download that I can't trade or loan to a friend.
I've taken care of my collection, somewhat. All of my newer PS3 and PC games are in excellent condition. Unfortunately, my Xbox collection has taken a beating from our growing childhood. Accidents combined with my little brother's carelessness has damaged some of the boxes and gotten scratches all over the discs. You can all imagine how I feel when I boot up those games for old times sake, only to get disappointed when it doesn't work half the time :(
