Poll Do you expect Half Life Alyx to have a significant change on VR? (62 votes)

Nope 47%
Big game changer incoming, a new dawn rises, good gollys 53%

Hello. A general question, do you expect much from the next supposedly VR exclusive title?

In 1998, Valve changed FPS. In 2004, they done it again, though not quite as revolutionary with Halflife 2 , it none the less changed the gaming landscape dramatically with Steam, which went from some weird annoying bit of software to the de facto dictator of all PC gamers everywhere many emulated but none superseded.

Are we expected another dramatic shift here? Or some cute tech demo that will be for a niche' and not really have any effect long term? Is this just a huge fuckup on Valves end alienating it's long-standing loyal community with bullshit?

Wake me up when they make something that isn't Artifact or a VR tech demo.

Well I'm 50/50 right now. On one hand Valve hastn't made a bad product and doesn't seems like the ones who tarnish their most beloved IP just to trojan horse the VR platform. On the other hand, you never know, greed usually trumps every thing and this past years have shown that gaming companies will go to any lengths to milk their consumers.

I think the main problem they have here is the price of VR.

It's not so much people not wanting it, as they simply cannot afford it.

@pc_rocks: have they though?

I've seen the return of Age Of Empires and Diablo this year and it shows me that they are offering the fans what they want.

Diablo IV returns to the graphical style of Diablo II

Age of Empires IV goes back to the middle ages, the same setting as the most popular game in the franchise.

Valve honestly doesn't give a single **** anymore and just wants to sell VR sets it seems.

Something didn't bring up, possibly important.

This would make sense as from the very incarnation of the company it had an abnormally high focus on community generated content.

I'm a VR guy but I'm going to have to say no only because I think we need more advances in VR tech. I think it will be a great game most likely but it's not going to be next level shit. We are going to have to wait to see what next gen VR headsets are capable of and devs need to find a better way to move in VR because teleporting sucks and ruins the immersion.

No, I don’t really think so. I’m sure VR fans will enjoy this as well as a number of Half-Life fans but I don’t really see this as creating some kind of boom in VR gaming.

You need to include the option "let me actually play the game first and then I'll tell you".

But then again, this is SW, after all. Playing games is not necessary to form an opinion about them.

Valve is pretty much one of the main innovators in the industry. They might not make games like they used to, which is a sore subject for a lot of people, but they are more or less de facto stewards of PC gaming imo. As privately, non-traded company, they can do what's best for the industry and are beholden to no one.

This is one of the major reasons why I think, at minimum, HL: Alyx will be one of the better VR games. I half-expect it to be revolutionary, but at the very least it will be one of the best titles. Valve has championed VR far too much to put out a poor title.

To the VR haters, not really sure what your problem is. At the very least you could at least be optimistic about it; it's gaming, after all, there's no reason to be a pissy little shit because you're too broke to buy something. Not many people have bothered, so you're not alone; with that said, VR is incredible and it's one of those rare things you need to experience before you can make a legit judgement.

This is Valve we're talking about, who even said years ago that the games they make in VR will be AAA games. There are also loads of full VR games at this point.

I have VR and I agree, while the experience is impressive, the tech is bulky, uncomfortable and you have to run too many programs alongside the game you're playing to make it work.

No Man's Sky is probably the best experience thus far (you can turn teleporting off and just walk) but I more often play on the flat screen because it's much less of a hassle.

No. if anything. and if its anything. its slap in a face for Half life fans.

we have been waiting for decades and what we got is VR spinoff.

id software today are in better place than valve. they have been given what fans wanted unlike valve who earn from steam only.

@ghosts4ever: In what universe is Left4Dead a bad game? It's one of the best co-op shooters of all time.

Back on topic...if anyone is going to make a revolutionary VR game, it'll be Valve. They are perfectionists when it comes to making singleplayer experiences, they love pushing new technologies, and they have been experimenting with VR game controls for years.

Either Valve as a developer is dead dead dead, or it'll be a landmark VR game that heralds a new era for the technology. I don't see any middle ground here.

@uninspiredcup: Half Life Episode One has that hospital scene. God, that was tense. I also really liked the finale.

Best part of Episode 1 though was we got to see a glimpse of Episode 2 at the end. No such thing at the end of Episode 2 though, haha.

Left 4 Dead was a game changer. I never had as much fun finishing a game on hardest difficulty and that was only because it was coop and thus I found like minded people willing to push through when all odds are against us. Also it had a really unique PVP that so many people lost.

Left 4 Dead 2 and DOTA 2 are still among the most played games today. Eurogamer had a great article about Left 4 Dead 2's longevity: it's not a live service game, you don't carry anything over from match to match. It's just a great game.

Wow, Valve is really at their best when they are at their worst.

No, not really. I'm expecting a 3-5 hour long Valve Index tech demonstrator.

Even if it fails, Valve won't give a shit. They already have a solid amount of failed products in their portfolio. Steam Machines, SteamOS, Artifact...

They are very aware fans have moved on from the H-L franchise.

Episode 1 should have been released as free epilogue DLC but they sold as expansion. infact whole episodic released didnot work as a result valve has to cancelled episode 3. although EP2 was fantastic. but EP1 was simply Awful.

Dota 2 is casual non gamers MMO game that lot of my non gamers friends play it all the time

Left 4 dead was just coop game sold at full price with no proper SP campaign. waste of time and money.

lol. You seriously make no sense.

Episode 1 was bad because it should've been free.
Dota 2 is bad because it's a casual MMO game your friends play, who you think are non gamers.
L4D is bad because it was coop without a SP campaign.

I could explain why these statements are among the dumbest in the world, but I hope I don't need to.

if someone say EA release EP1. they will be hated. but they are valve. no matter how much anti consumer practice they do. they will be well liked.

EP1 was nothing more than just cashgrab which use same asset as HL2.

Cool opinion, but it still doesn't make it bad. Less good than HL2 or Episode 2? Sure, I can agree. Bad? Hell no. It was more Half-Life.

id software only made one bad game (Rage) people still remember.

valve made bad games (EP1, L4d 1 and 2, Dota2) and people still praise them.

Doom 3 was masterpiece though. better than any valve post HL2 game.

the fact is id software is in much better position as game developer than valve today.

valve are billion dollar company, have insane amount of budget but making a cheap VR tech demo just show this company is not passionate anymore.

I'm going to say no. I honestly can't imagine them doing anything at this point that will push the genre forward. Plus, there are many people who have already set it in their heads that there's nothing VR can offer them, regardless of what games do with it.

I dunno.

I've never used VR, but I've seen a lot of the experiences that devs have created.

I guess I'm just having trouble imagining what, with the current hardware, could be considered a significant change.

If marketed right, then yes.

They are investing heavy into VR, this won't be a one off... I remember reading they had 3 games in the works for VR and if this trailer is anything to go by they are holding no punches.

Oh really?

They actually made.

Three fantastic games with Episode 1 having the best overall gameplay of all the Halflife 2 titles?

Even when they are bad they are good.

Incredible.

This.

Indeed. Price is the reason Ghost is hating on it. Hell many people who hate VR would love to have one if not for the price.

But, the actual thing I'm worried about is it getting a free pass from users due to Valve and being HL and overly criticized by critics because it's a Valve game and they usually don't give two shits about what 'gaming journalists' thinks about the platform/hobby. It could be other way around as well because of having a female lead.

Well, it has a half-Asian half-black female protagonist who dresses like male, so the woke critics will be fapping their little harts out until their eye-balls roll-back into their skulls.

Did you know Halflife 2 was actually about Trump and the alt-right? Gordon Freeman is Antifa. The head-crabs obviously symbolic of Bill Cosby trying to rape your face.

Very politically aware.

White zombies though. Game over man, game over.

Yeah, that's a NO.

It's a hard bitch-slap to the face of HL fans. Everyone has waited for over a decade for Gaben to get off his billion+ dollar ass and finish the damn series. Valve had no excuse to not do so sooner. Just a bunch of lazy devs.

And what will we get for all of that time? Just some half-assed VR tech demo, and not simply a regular game like everyone else wanted.

Screw this anti-consumer company. They do not deserve the praise they get.
