Do you really need HD to enjoy your console?

VGobbsesser
It depends really. If a game is designed for HD, but then played on SD it looks like **** most of the time. If a game is made at SD res and played at that RES, it looks pretty nice still, but HD just makes things a lot clearer and makes distant objects/small things much more good looking. It just brings out the detail in games that you have never seen before. Like my headphones/music statement.

[QUOTE="karicha9"]Which again just points to graphics whoreitis. I'd prefer a big screen to HD anyday. I have no problem seeing things in SD and never have. You people act like HD is some kind of savior to your eyes. Let's face it, though. Hitch on HD is still....well...Hitch.
The_Game21x

Well, it all boils down to this.

Which would you rather eat?

This?

Or this?

Essentially that's all SD and HD is, with the first one being SD and the second HD. They're basically the same thing (cheeseburgers) but the second looks (and probably tastes) a hell of a lot better.

Good and funny comparison :D

Hyperbole much?

How so? HD looks significantly better than SD in most cases.

Only the people that said yes dont have an HDTV. It makes it oodles better for some games but not all. Example: Oblivion and COD2 looks pretty good on an SDTV. The bad are Gears, GRAW, PD0. Those are the ones that stick out.

[QUOTE="hellzhitman"]No, thats not what I said. You must be some die-hard Nintendo fan because I'm getting pissed off. Hd makes games better in the sense that they're more immersive and everything doesn't look like a 3 inch wide pixel on your screen. It's like a pair of good headphones. Once you try it, you notice things you never noticed before( this is for games that are made the right way). Besides, if you are a Nintendo fan I'd like to tell you there was no reason Nintendo couldn't have made it's resolution scalable like the Xbox and PS2 did...karicha9

Wait, so you didn't say this:
[QUOTE="hellzhitman"]That is not true at ALL. The experience can be a lot worse if you can't stand the low resolution and it just makes thinks hard to see.

Now it's not about things being hard to see? You're still just talking about aesthetics. I also find it interesting that you want to make this into a console issue. Whatever console you like, you shouldn't be head over heels with HD. It's not that big of a deal when it comes to gaming.

Well basically i can tell you that for four hours I hated most of Red Steel because of the resolution and the lack of ANY AA at all. What do you mean a console issue? We're on a ****ing gaming forum, what should I be talking about?

EDIT: here is a real life comparison.  I wear glasses.  For three years I have worn them and my vision has been getting worse since then.  At first, I didn't mind not having them much only for distant things and my vision wasn't that bad.  Now my glasses were broken for a year and I got them resubscribed about three months ago.  The difference? I saw things I had noticed thereuntil up close( small things).  The difference between 20/20 vision and bad vision is night and day.  You notice things you never had before in a new type of clarity and only when you don't have your glasses after wearing them a minute ago could you miss them.  The same applied for HD( but not that dramatic)

Got a question. What actually is the definition of HD? Is it like a 720p 1080p thing or something else??

Breesy

 480i = SDTV (Standard Definition)

480p = EDTV (Enhanced Definition)

720i/p and up = HDTV

It used to be 480p, but then that got out done by 720p. Now 720p is the standard for high definition and 1080p is just HD delux basically.

Are you supporting or rebutting my points? You just proved that the factors to decide a console war are not the graphics, which was my original point.Nagidar

No, what I'm saying is, there are other factors involved, if the Xbox was released along side the PS2 do you think the PS2 would have dominated?

The Dreamcast had a 1 year headstart over the PS2, and it still got flattened. The head start wasn't exactly very relevant in this case, how does that translate to the rest?

SEGA was nearly bankrupt when the DC was launched, they were hoping the DC would be their savior, they were wrong, SONY launched and SEGA couldn't financially support the DC.

What exactly am I exaggerating out of proportion? Does HD not look significantly better than SD?  It does in my experiences.

Red steel is not a horrible game because of the graphics.

Again, there's no need for the dramatic comparison.  The difference isn't that huge.

It gets that big after being used to something such as HD.  I said, I couldn't enjoy Red Steel for a couple hours because of it.  And you're right, it's a bad game because it has a horrible framerate and that is undenyable...

I would not use the word "significant".  Seriously, I don't see how you can argue your use of hyperbole.

Been gaming on PC for a long time. HD is overrated. That so called 'next gen experience' did not mesure up to the jump from 2d to 3d imo.

Edit: oh, and by the way, your poll question can be easily misinterpreted.

Oh course, I don't even own an HDTV and all my Wii and my 360 are both awesome nonetheless.

i would. first of all a bigger screen makes it more immersive, but it also shopws what the games look like at their true resolution. Much more detail and with the better cables you get better colour, blackvalues, less artifacts... it significantly enhances the gaming experience imo.

Topic Creator:  Please define "Next-Gen" or restate the poll without using the term.  You've asked a question about HD graphics that will be interpreted very differently by different people.  Hence all the arguments.

For my money, it's the network content that is going to have more mass appeal than enhanced graphics.  The "Everybody Votes" channel and VCS, fulfillment for niche genres such as strategy board games on XBLA, downloadable demos on the PS3 network - that's what is going to push this product cycle, in my opinion.

Can we stop calling it "Next-Gen" now, please?  "Next-Gen" is in 2009 or somesuch.  The consoles and handhelds are all launched for the most part, so we need to just get down to brass tacks and settle down to the trench warfare of hyping games.  I know this isn't the most exciting time of the year for that but getting bogged down with semantic arguments is just a waste of resources.  Just ask if HD is necessary for gaming - period.  Forget about trying to pin down "Next-Gen".  It's not only a moving target, it's vapor.

Well, if resolution is now a reference for a "next-gen" term, then I've been enjoying that next-gen thing since the year of 2002 I believe.

No, I'd just rather spend money on my collection than my set-up. I have a crap TV and a crap game room but I have dozens of consoles and handhelds and hundreds of games. I could buy an HDTV today if I wanted to.   So much for your rash, poor-thought-out generalizations....

Being an SDTV 28" widescrren t.v. user i would have to say no,the difference from 4801 to 720p is BIG,if only i could afford an nice 40" sony bravia :(
