There's nothing to forgive. They didnt do anything wrong. The hackers did.

Also i wasnt affected by the hack. My credit was fine, your credit was fine,we couldnt go online for a month. Big deal. At least my system still worked.

As far as im concerned it never happened.

Ill never forgive microsoft for multiple RRODs. At least with the hack my system still worked, just had no online functionality. With RROD my system was broke with no offline, or online functionality. Thats far worse in my opinion. I can live without online.

I was one of the lucky or maybe the unlucky people who were not affected by this hack since by that time I was moving to a new place and I didnt have an internet connection except using 3G tethering from my phone lol.

I was disappointed with the way Sony handled the situation like leaving us in the dark and notifying us a week after the breach. Well at least we were compensated with free credit monitoring for a year and two games (four if you count the EU account).

If anything, this just improves their security... and it's free.

In order for me to forgive them, I have to blame them and I don't.

I haven't forgiven them for taking the OtherOS feature away. That's why I think they deserved to be hacked. Lets hope they learned their lesson to not a sell a product with a feature and then take it away after their customers paid for that product.

Wouldn't the world be amazing if nothing bad would ever happen in the first place? There are so many things that are unpredictable and there has yet to be something that exist that can stop these type of things 100% of the time.

Um, I was more talking in the lines that Sony should have had better security, but WHATEVER LOL.

This again? Yeah, I'm guilty of beating this dead horse and you'd have to be blind to not hold Sony at some fault here.

Do I? No.

Should I? Eh, I don't think so but maybe that's just me.

Will I? Probably not because the attack could have been prevented by Sony and this has been proven numerous times.

Sony didn't hack the network, hackers did. As for their handling of it, they notice there may have been a network breach, they start looking into it. There was no need to get people worked up yet. As they begin to uncover evidence of what had been exposed, they bring in outside forensics teams to verify. Less than a week later, they tell the story. For comparison, in the TJ Maxx data breach, the hacker first breached the System in July 2005. TJX didn't detect it until December 18 2006. They didn't reveal it to the public until Jan 17 2007. A full month later. And they still didn't say exactly how much data was compromised for 2 months more. And that was a breach that actually involved over 46 million card numbers, and actually led to fraud. Why'd they wait a month before mentioning it? To let them work with security experts to figure out just how bad it was and contain it. Sony waited for the same reason... but for only 6 days. Its not really that bad. Hacks and data compromise happen all the time. Most companies don't even make public statements, and just tuck the info into regulatory filings.

Bottom line is, they didn't do the hacking, they were open with the public in a relatively quick manner, as far as this type of thing goes, they offered me ample compensation for the network downtime and coverage in the unlikely event I actually had any financial losses. What exactly is there to forgive them for?

I hate to say it, but I stopped right here. It's completely Sony's fault for not having proper security on their network. Not to mention the reports that Sony had laid-off their Security Staff prior to the attack? Not to mention how long it took them to report to their loyal (sometimes moronic) following? I'm sorry but if that's not Sony's fault then I don't know what is.

What I will say is the way it was initially handled by Sony was poor. Really poor.

As annoying as the outage was, I didn't lose any personal data at least and I did get free games. Even though Sony should have had a better firewall, they didn't hack and try to steal info, Lulzsec did, and those guys kind of got sent home thanks to Antisec or whoever hacked them. So yeah, even though Sony could have been more careful, I got some free stuff out of it and it wasn't all their fault. Plus it did get me a chance to catch up on some single player games I hadn't finished.

He never said it wasn't Sony's fault, he simply stated that Sony didn't hack the network, hackers did. And that's a fact that's impossible to dispute.

[QUOTE="JohnF111"]Sony didn't lose my info, someone took it, even if i leave my car door open it doesn't give someone the right to take my cd player and hence make it my fault, it was still theft.ArchoNils2

So if you lend me your car, I leave the door white open and somebody steals you Cd Player you wouldn't blame me?

I never loaned Sony anything, i gave them it knowing full well it was of my own free will and that it would be stored on a network which is connected to the internet, like any network is at risk from hackers or viruses i knew it was a risk from the beginning. I don't get all people with a grudge, the first rule is not defeating hackers but making life harder for them, there is always a way in no matter what.

Forgive? Like a friend or relative? I think 'forgive' is the wrong term here. Will I still go on their service? Yes. If that means I forgive them, then so be it. But I will be more cautious of Sony than I usually am.

Sure, the hackers shoulder all the blame they get. But that doesn't excuse Sony of their shortcomings in the situation.

Yeah, you clearly did stop right there. It took them 4 days to report there was an intrusion, and 6 to fully disclose that personal account details including name, address, birthday, and hashed passwords had been viewed, and that they could not 100% rule out that their encrypted CC tables (without CVV numbers) had been accessed, there was no indication that it had. They were very forthcoming with info to the public. Most companies that get hacked NEVER issue public statements and apologies, and merely report the incident in regulatory filings months later. That TJX breach a few years back (that was WAAAAAY worse than the PSN thing), it took them 5 months to even detect the breach, and then they waited a month before releasing that there was a breach... and another two months after that to actually report how bad it was (which they did via a regulatory filing, and not a press release to the public or anything).

It would have been stupid of them if on day one, as soon as they got indication there was a security breach, but without any idea of the extent, they had issued a statement saying there may have been a hack and everyone's data may have been compromised. If it then turned out that it was nothing, they would have incited a panic for nothing. It's like yelling fire in a crowded theater because you get a faint scent of burning... when all it is is the guy next to you's popcorn was a little burnt.

Further, you don't know how good their security was. I don't know how good their security was. All we have is heresay and speculation based on the completely flawed logic that the fact they were hacked is proof that their security was lacking. People just wanna be haters. Nice one, btw, with the implication that anyone who didn't blow things out of proportion and act like Sony was to blame was "moronic."

Banks especially, they reveal nothing because plain and simply people like Zophar would feel safer burying their money in the back yard if they did.

If they really don't forgive them then they should of sold their PS3. No need to cry about it and still use the console.
