No doubt the female lead role has been around quite some time in the video game universe. But, I know there are some out there that still don't want to play as a woman in a video game. Maybe they can't see themselves playing a female role because they can't picture a woman being a fighter. Maybe it's because they're use to playing as a male character it just doesn't seems too unusual. Or maybe it has to do with deep issues or insecurities that make you uncomfortable as a man that keeps you from playing as a female character.

I use Sakura now for Street Fighter IV. It's not only her cuteness that made me want to select her. She's a faster, but a weaker Ryu. See, I'm pretty comfortable playing as anyone or anything. Now I just got Final Fantasy XIII and it inspired me to post a thread like this since Final Fantasy games in the main series usually have a male lead role you would play as. I'm sure that some of the gamers out there probably didn't buy this game because Lightning is the one who's in the spotlight most of the time.

I often choose a female character over a male one. So as for having a problem, quite the opposite. My Shepard is much sexier than the one on the box.

No. It's not like I will miss great games like Bayonetta and the Metroid series just because the main character is a women. I think thats stupid.

You have to be retarded to have a problem playing a game as a female character. seriously there is no other ways to put it

da_illest101

Guess you can call me retarded. I only play with female leads sometimes most of the time I dont want to,but there are exceptions like ff13 and metroid. It all comes down to the gameplay.

In FF games the main character is always a guy so I think it's fine that a female got the spotlight for once.

I prefer playing as a guy because... well, I'm a guy. I dunno. That's just how it is I guess? But I don't mind playing a woman. It's no big deal and doesn't make the game any less enjoyable.

If you're going to play a game for a fair amount of time... might as well be looking at a females backside as opposed to a male one.

As long as she is not a whore like bayonetta or a ditz like Perfect Dark Zero. What happened to class of Joanna Dark from the original PD?

Nah. Lightning is my favorite character to play as in FFXIII.

I loved Faith in ME.

Bayonetta in errr... Bayonetta.

Madison Paige in HR.

I dig strong lead female characters.

With games like Tomb Raider? No. But, if I had a choice of being gal or guy, I prefer to be the guy.

I don't, though if I were to play a RPG where you are bound to save the world (like DA:O), i always like to make a male-fighter; i find that a female thief (for example) is not fit for the heroic type, i rather have a brave Knight as the savior and champion of whatever game i'm playing.

Though I am always suspicious of those who only play as female even though they are 'male'.

Yes. I get so nervous and shy playing one. I was scared of buying FFXIII because of it, but she doesn't look too girly. I didn't like the female characters in Lost Odyssey.

Not at all. Samus has been one of my favorite characters since I was like 6.

And I honestly wish more third person shooters had female main characters.

If I'm going to be staring at ass the entire game, it might as well be female.

The problem with playing as female lead characters is that, most of the time, they are products of a very sexualised visual culture. That is what makes me uncomfortable, not the fact that they are female.

In fact, in games which allow character customisation, I often prefer to play as a female.

I think trends have changed in recent years, though, in regards to representation of women in videogames. Just looking at the development of Lara Croft proves that, though there is a long way to go.

I don't have a problem with it, it's just that the genre that features female lead characters (JRPGs) is one I don't care for.

So do you only go and watch films that have male lead roles? Or read books from only a male perspective? A lot of games arent about becoming the character, but instead are about experiencing a world and a story from a particular character's point of view. If that experience is interesting enough to be the product of a videogame, why would it be weird for a male to want to experience it? I love playing as Samus in Super Metroid. I love playing as Faith in Mirror's Edge. Does that make me... well, you know?

A videogame is more interactive then a book or a film, alot more interactive, because you control him/her, in a movie or a book, you're essentially a bystander.

That's actually the point of Bayonetta. People are mistaken if they assume Bayonetta takes itself seriously. The only thing that isn't tongue and cheek and ridiculous is the quality of the gameplay. Everything else is SUPPOSED to be laughed at and not taken seriously.

I might control the character, but I am still strung along a story woven by the developer. Its all scripted, and bound to happen, and part of the fun of videogames is immersing yourself in that carefully constructed world. Insecurities over gender shouldnt come into that. In my head, I know I am controlling Samus, who has her own history and her own life that is distinctly seperate from mine. Im not suddenly going to feel weird as if I might become female because I am involved in that. It doesnt make sense.
