I don't remember the last time I bought a dvd. I currently have a huge dvd collection, so the thought of buying some of those movies again just to have it on blu-ray seem nonsensical to me. Especially when I know in a decade, blu-ray will probably be obsolete. All of my movie watching is now done on demand or I just download it. I think for games will be different. I will continue to buy physical media for them but I really do see services like Steam the future way many of us will get our games.

I guess Blu-Ray is great and all, but I know me and most of my friends/family don't have the fancy televisions and what not to show a difference from DVD's. I completely agree with the download and streaming thing, that is probably a more probable future.

blu ray will likely by less dominant then dvd, primarily becuase in the places where the tech to support it exists, there is also tech for downloading (which is consistently getting better). but as artic mentioned, its really just about games, and since its just a format (like cartridges, or dvds) it really doesnt matter much....

Sure I can see it slowly taking over. I didn't even know what a blu-ray was the first few years it was out but i'm starting to see more and more blu-rays in the stores and movie rental places... but now that i reread your post it sounds like downloading/streaming will be more likely the thing of the future... hopefully not for games but still it could happen...

For movies, it could be. Although downloading for movies may become dominant, and games come in varieties of formats, so it shouldn't matter that much. Sony made the choice with blu-ray on each disk for added storage, it seems. Oh, and to kill piracy

I remember when DVD's were the same price.

A little different though, as not every household has a HDTV yet, therefore DVD's are the way to go, for most.

Just because you dont buy blurays doesnt mean it will be obsolete... If you dont want to buy blurays rent it; how much times are you gonna watch it if you buy a hard copy?

Yes. I think people still needs a physical media, and BD is the best choice, but it could be the last. Movies will allways be available on a physical media, because getting the same picture and sound quality with all the extra's, it'll have to be one very big download or stream. And when you buy a movie or a game, you want to own it, and having it on the hdd that can fail anytime is'nt the same. And how big do these servers have to be if they are going to have every single movie that is ever made on there? Especially in good quality. And how will the internet connection in my area and servers hold up if everybody is streaming or downloading 1080p movies after work? Way into the future it will be possible, but not now.

I buy BD when the movie is worth having on BD, animation movies or action movies like Transformers or Batman. Drama movies can stay on DVD only, hehe. But what I have started to do alot is downloading games from the PS Store for my PSP or PS3, and that is something I can see getting more popular in the future. Being able to download those old games for example.

I think Blu-Ray is the future here today. I don't buy DVDs anymore, unless it's anime cuz they rarely get Blu-Ray releases, since I know that there is a much better format available. There not too much that i'd repurchase on Blu-Ray outside of select anime series and the Star Wars series. Downloading and streaming is cool and I do alot of it (mostly streaming), but if there is a movie that I know I want to own, I prefer the quality that physical media offers vs what my inet connection is able to stream. I think it has a use for gaming this gen, but I think it will actually be critical next gen. Especially for me cuz I play alot of JRPGs.

Yeah, it's not so big this time. I see movie-buffs, and people who are into tech to go this route. Certain families may do, but I can't see all of them doing it.

I love watching a good HD transfer of a movie. There are some bad ones out there though :(

DD is NOWHERE near ready to become standard by next gen. Plenty of plenty of analyst already stated this and even though it's kinda huge for movies (nowhere near huge enough to become the standard for movies either), it have a long ways to go before becoming standard for gaming

My parents have 2 HDTV's in their house with a blu-ray player hooked up to one of them. Guess what they buy 95% of the time? DVD's... Blu-Ray will never be as popular as DVD because most of the general public (including my parents) do not see any reason to spend $5-$10 more for a blu-ray version of a movie since most can't tell the difference between native 1080p blu-ray movies and upscaled 1080p DVD's... IMO blu-ray doesn't really offer a huge advantage unless you're a videophile and need the best of the best.

Asbroadband speeds get faster, more affordable, and computers/DVR's get bigger hard drives, I think downloading movies from the net or a special movie service is the future, not blu-ray.

I only buy classic (think really good) movies on bluray when they are made much better than the dvd version. Plus I got most of them for around 10$ a pop so that is good considering that renting a blu ray disct where I live is like 5$. I have a 60" plasma 1080p and when the movie has been remastered really well there is a huge difference.

For some of my bluray movies, I got them cheaper than the DVD version. :/ Plus again it depends on the movie some early blurays or those released quickly by studios to make money are basically upscaled dvd versions since they come from the same master. Others, looks a lot better on bluray.

It's probably the future of cheap solid state media. I'm sure blu-ray will be fairly common on PCs in a few years.

For physical media yes, because it hasn't been cracked yet and hollywood will push it as far as it will go until it is cracked to cut down on piracy.

If they're the future the future isn't now, the Blu-ray disk drive in the PS3 is more of a burden than a aid. Current generation console games receive next to no benefit from Blu-ray storage space, it in fact suffers because the PS3 Blu-ray disk drive is only fast enough to support HD movies.

Perhaps when we have 1GB Vram so use massive art assets in games and Blu-ray disk drives are much faster on consoles people will start seeing beneifits.

For physical media yes, because it hasn't been cracked yet and hollywood will push it as far as it will go until it is cracked to cut down on piracy.

yes it is the future, look how good it look on a 50inch plasma or lcd hdtv in 1080p. I'm not so sure about gaming tho. sick of installing game to hard drive on ps3 . which i prefer xbox 360 play instantly. I assume blu ray drive will become faster in the future and no installation if there are ps4

My grandad god bless him who was a real tech head just passed away a few weeks ago. He left me his blu-ray player and a collection of 11 blu-ray movies. I can see the difference but...

..its not a huge difference over 576p DVDs upscaled on my 720p TV. At their current price point I'll still but DVDs and settle with 5.1 surround etc. Unless Blu-ray comes right down in price, its never going to become mainstream.

It'll come down in price, much like DVD's did. Any new technology costs a fortune to produce unfortunately.

downloads aint the future either until we have speeds that are acceptable dls will have to be like they are now-small games or last gen ones old ones,

anything less then 7 gig , most of its less then 1 gig , the xbox originals would be the only ones to be over 1 gig

bluray is the future for movies but dvd will stil be sold along side it because sd dont do bluray

but games its not even worth the cost sony learned the hard way as not every developer fills a dvd

I will continue to buy physical media for them but I really do see services like Steam the future way many of us will get our games.

bphan

Good thing you don't need to re buy any movies. DVD plays on Blu-Ray players. I have a lot of DVD movies as well, but I won't be replacing them. There is no reason for me too. I will buy my future movies on Blu-Ray, but I will not waste my money replacing the movies I already have.
