I was just randomly reading console stories on Wikipedia and I looked up PlayStation and couldn't believe how the PSX came to be. I'll summarize it but you can read the full article at your leisure.

Nintendo thought of using CDs for their video game consoles in the late 80s but at the time there was licensing and all that to be done. Later on, around the early 90s, Nintendo and Sony started talking and had plans to make an SNES add-on for CD-ROM games. They made up a contract and almost signed it before CES '91 until one of the Nintendo guys read in the contract that Sony would have rights to all Nintendo's titles to be put on CD. He was outraged and broke the contract right before they were going to announce this new deal at CES. Sony didn't know what to do since they had everything ready so they decided to go forth with their own console using CDs instead. Thus, the PlayStation came to be in full in 1995. I was shocked when I read that it only used 32-bit graphics when it went head-to-head with the N64's 64-bit graphics!!! I'm almost 20 and I didn't even know about this coming up. It was really something.

I'm a Nintendo gamer and I'm glad they didn't go with Sony... but not for negative reasons like many of you may think. I can truly appreciate Sony stepping out and doing their own thing. It has caused different types of gamers to emerge to this day, different types of games to be formed (Crash, Spyro, Klonoa, Tenchu), and franchises to be established (MGS and Final Fantasy come to mind). It also allowed more people to think about games in terms of quality and art instead of only just fun. We're all gamers and most of us started with Nintendo so we're all gamer brothers and sisters at heart. Keep gaming guys and I hope the system hatred will end someday.

Just imagine if Sony went ahead with Nintendo...we would all be playing a ****load of casual games. We would have missed the glor days of PSOne and PS2, and Microsoft might have not entered the competition. Halo would have been on the Mac, and the Mac may have entered competative gaming...oh boy, what a world. All in all...thanks Sony.

Haha, me too. The history of Sony is very Ironic in terms of their Playstation. Nintendo basically brought Sony into the market, only to have their asses handed to them in sweet, sweet, revenge. Ken Kutaragi births, what is in my opinion, the most revolutionary console, and yet ironically today, he essentially killed it with arrogance. It's always funny how the underdog seems to win. Everything gets knocked down by something else and with Sony, the hubris of their success really broke a large part of them. I really enjoy the Playstation's history. It's because of them that gaming has reached such a variety of audiences.

There is A LOT more than what WIKI states...you should check out "The FIRST QUARTER"by Steven Kent, great, great Read.

Nintendo Embarrassed Sony, and really modivated them. Japanese companies operate on honor, and Nintendo acted very American at that CES show.

Huh? I think this is wrong.

Nintendo and Sony already had signed a deal and began working on the playstation (snes add-on).

Then nintendo pulled out after closely examining what they had already agreed to.

Then, with stunning arrogance, nintendo decided that gaming didn't "need" CD format and cartridge would continue to dominate the market - developing the N64.

No, I'm pretty sure it was because they decided to go with Phillips instead of Sony in the middle of the deal, and we know what came of that, the CDi, which Nintendo abandoned but Phillips kept going. It was too late to go back to Sony, so cartridges it was.

Nintendo is not the "victim" they are portrayed to be in this so called videogame drama.

Nintendo and Sony made the deal in 1988, and nintendo backed out of the deal finally in 1991. Sony felt double crossed and were very angry. Because hey had already worked very hard on the snes add on, they went ahead and further developed the playstation they were working on.

Why couldn't they have gone to CD yet? I mean, were CDs so new that they would be difficult for nintendo to implement them into their next console? Unlikely.

They did write actual novels about this topic, and with greater detail, accuracy, and it covered gaming since the beginning.

So to answer,"They did write a book of it."

Check out : The First Quarter, the Rise and Fall of Videogames, or The Ultimate History of Videogames.

The one part about this consistently posted story that is never touched upon is the fact that Sony also tried to connect with Sega.
