It really has to do with the game, and the characters who are delivering the lines. I don't care if every other word out of someone's mouth is f*ck, as long as the character is believable, and comes across as a guy you'd expect to be foul-mouthed. When it's forced, it'll sound bad, just like any kind of forced dialog, vulgar or not. Right now, I can't really think of any game I've played where vulgar dialog has been a bad point.

Its quite funny in House of the Dead: overkill. Then in some other games which i have played it just doesnt add anything what so ever.

Sometimes i feel that cursing in video games is just plain unnecessary and tasteless, theres no shock value anymore in language. Sometimes the cursing impedes me from enjoying a single player experience (Killzone 2). How do you feel?

jsmoke03
its actually appropriate imo. not everyone talks without cussing just as not everyone cusses all the time...but its there. In an army setting, it seems pretty genuine

I've played tons of military FPS games and those didn't have the amount of pointless cursing Killzone 2 had. They clearly took it overboard, and wanted to be different or something, idk. Profanity in an FPS is good, but not to the point where it outweighs the normal dialogue, removes all ingenuity.

Who cares? it's a video game. Constant gay jokes is much worse than cursing.

Cursing in games has never been overkill, sure it's tasteless but it's a lot worse irl obviously. Now games like the Batman Arkham games that have no cursing at all, and still manage to be violent and creepy, those are good examples to follow.

parkurtommo

The bad guys almost always talk about female characters as b*tches, so there's some cursing.

There has to be a point to it for me to want it. Most of the time, there is no point so I could do without.

It really depends on how you use it, how much you use it, if its appropriate when used, setting, and such. Cursing is fine if tasteful or at least works with the material.

I was more referring to movies. It works the same way. Most video games have awful stories, dialogue is almost redundant.

I don't understand this logic. There isn't even really a point for cursing in real life in the first place.

I don't understand this logic. There isn't even really a point for cursing in real life in the first place.

Every word in a language has a time and a place otherwise it wouldn't exist. In my everyday life I don't greet a family member with "hey dick head" because that isn't the time and the place. I might say that to one of my close friends who I have not seen in a while as a way of getting across the fact that I want to greet him without making it sound sentimental or making the moment emotional. In turn he would understand that I wouldn't call anyone but one of my best friends by such a rude introduction. And there you see lies the actual point to the swearing and/or rude remark. It serves a purpose. Most games don't have that kind of thought put into the dialogue which is why most titles have terrible cringe worthy writing.

I could do without it.

Doesn't really bother me though, although many times I can't stand the story or dialogue in video games. Often the games with the absolute worst stories are the ones that go completely overboard with the cursing. The cursing is just a symptom of the terrible writing, it's not just the cursing that bothers me it's the whole package. On the other hand if the story is well written and dialogue is voiced well, then a few curse words here and there are perfectly fine just like they are in an action film or whatever.

Depends on context. Compare two shooters, a game like Bulletstorm it fits perfectly with the tone and with the script. Or even SpecOps the line with it's whole supergrimdark tone - it works. In a game like yes, Killzone 2, it is hilariously out of place as some sort of 'forced maturity', like a adolescent 13 year old straining a moustache. Same with Battlefield 3 quite frankly. Which really boils down to how it's used in the script and how it fits with the games tone; In BF3 it's an absolute joke in this regard.

Uh, what? Yes, yes there is, vulgarity sure as hell has its place and purpose, which is why we make a distinction about vulgarities.

Cursing just for the sake of cursing and trying to sound cool is stupid. Cursing that fits with a character, or situation is fine.

Rocker6

This!

I don't have problems with cursing, but if its overused,or used to impress a certain age group, then it feels tasteless...

Basically how I feel.

It can spice things up a bit. Like that scene in RE4 when Leon fled into that cabin, blocked himself in and heard that chainsaw roar.

I don't mind, as long as it doesn't come off corny and isn't overused. GOW seems to do the whole cursing thing pretty well, it works like a charm when one messes up a quick reload, I find myself saying the same thing as Marcus

Depends on the character and situation. If the character is pissed off, I'd almost expect them to swear.

When used sparingly and with the right characters, "swear" words are invaluable tools for a writer to showcase stronger emotions within a character. What do you think shows more anger? A character screaming "Ah, crap!" or "F*CK!"

Of course Gamespot doesn't allow such evil language, but you get my point. So yes, I do like stronger language when not overused and used to show things "normal" words cannot.

Lord_Nas3k

Took the words out of my mouth.

It deppends.

Saying sh*t or f*ck once or twice, doesn't makes me harm. But insults and bad words aren't needed to show that people are angry or anything. For example, Kratos in God of War doesn't swear, only kills ruthlessly :P

It doesn't matter if it's in there or not. If it's excessive, however, it should be done in a humorous way, to fit a certain character or characters, or just appropriate for the situation.

I can understand some games that really don't involve 'stressful' situations, and just every character is just cussing up a storm for no reason. But some people complain about cursing in some games during battles and whatnot...Do they really expect the character to say: "Oh gee gosh golly wiz sir, that bomb just about killed us, this war is heck!" ?

Though that would be quite entertaining. :P

I cuss more in multiplayer games not to the other players but those stupid glitches, over powered randomness, connection errors, getting booted from a game, lag, etc.

Seriously a lot of developers don't take any pride anymore in making games.

Now it's all about a pay check and not the love for the craft of game making.
