Poll Do you like Fallout more or The Elder Scrolls? (121 votes)

Fallout 50%
The Elder Scrolls 50%

Bethesda has two major franchises- two massive series that command the loyalty of dozens of millions of fans, hundreds of Game of the Year awards, and extremely high review scores each time.

They're both pretty similar in a lot of respects, too- they're open world sandbox RPGs that allow a non linear, emergent gameplay experience of the kind that is still not quite replicated by any other game on the market (which is why Bethesda games continue to command the kind of respect that they do, even in the face of superior competition). These two franchises differ mostly in only one thing- the setting. The Elder Scrolls takes a traditional high fantasy setting backed with great lore, while Fallout goes for a post nuclear apocalypse, backed with great pop culture references and in jokes.

My question- which do you like better? Fallout? Or The Elder Scrolls? And why?

My answer is The Elder Scrolls. High fantasy settings always appeal to me more than just about any other setting (except for hard deep space science fiction), and Fallout's setting on the other hand is the kind of setting that actively turns me off. So this was a pretty easy decision to make (Fallout 4 is actually the first Fallout game that I am playing seriously).

The Elder Scrolls, I've never had an attachment to Fallout, and I would say without questioning it that 90% of the existing Fallout community never even played the first two games, they started with the third because it was the trendy thing to do.

That's a hard one, after all I liked Fallout back at its roots, but also really like the new setup they made with Fallout 3, New Vegas, have yet to fire up Fallout 4 so don't have thoughts to sort on that. TES however I only really started with Morrowind which came out right about the same time I got into the Fallout games, one of my roommates at the time got me and another roommate of mine into both games, both of which I'd of never picked up on my own he coached me on the finer points of both and it opened me up to both styles of games as a result.

I really liked the transition to Fallout 3, and liked Fallout New Vegas, not as much as Fallout 3 but I enjoyed it nonetheless. My overall experience with either was I didn't experience bugs like others did but I did have more performance issues (framerate problems toward ends of both games or during intense parts). While people often hated on Oblivion, I liked it a great deal. I still found it pretty enjoyable and really fun to play. Whereas Skyrim, I didn't like Skyrim one bit. I thought it was a lazy game. They nailed the mechanics sure, those were solid; great improvement there. Just with everything else, the story, the quests, the friggin quests are the meat of any big RPG, and they were oh so severely lacking it totally ruined it for me.

Anyhow, that's mostly what I'm looking forward to looking at when I do play Fallout 4. Are the mechanics solid, and are the quests good. I'm not gonna get hung up on this performance nit-picking unless it severely ruins my experience. I mean, right now I'm split, I probably enjoyed TES more overall but I really disliked Skyrim so much I might consider saying I like Fallout more at the moment; I'll hold off judgement for now until I have a better idea what Fallout 4 offers.

EDIT: I'd have to say, if I had a favorite game I put the most hours into I don't know if I could say for certain whether it was Morrowind or Oblivion either. I played both so friggin much I'm sure either of them outspend the time I spent on all the Fallout games combined... okay, for expedience sake since I probably won't return to vote after I get a clue I'm gonna say TES.

They're both the same. But one with swords, the other with guns. Swords > guns though.

Fallout x100. So many games do it better than ES in the fantasy medieval setting but none do it better than Fallout in its post apocalyptic setting.

Falout, even though Bethestada has tried really hard to ruin it. There's hardly any difference and there's absolutely no RPG elements left.

I didn't like either before Skyrim and FO4 came out. Between FO4 and Skyrim, right now I like Skyrim more, but I haven't really spent as much time with FO4 yet, so I guess I'll wait before I make up my mind on this one.

Fallout had 3 good games: Fallout 1, Fallout 2 and Fallout New Vegas. You know, the ones not made by Bethesda.

TES had 2 good games: Daggerfall, and Morrowind. You know, the ones made by Bethesda before Todd Howard got too much power.

Fallout 1 and New Vegas are amongst the best games of all time, as is Morrowind. 2 and Daggerfall are good but not exceptional.

The winner is Fallout.

I chose Fallout, but I'm feeling a bit of that decision is due to being burnt out on everything medieval from playing The Witcher 3 so much. Though in truth I've never cared for ES since its early days.

Elder Scrolls. I enjoy high fantasy more, as it's easier to get lost in all aspects of the worlds. A little different to Fallout, in that everything is a shithole, but some things are just slightly less shitty.

In terms of lore ?

I don't have to disagree here....it's objectively impossible. TES Lore > The Witcher Lore.

I know The Witcher 3 deserves it's praise and respect for being an absolute masterpiece and probably one of the best RPG's you can play......but please...don't try to compare Witcher lore to The Elder Scrolls lore.

oh elder scrolls through and through. i like fallout but if i had to choose then elder scrolls.

im glad bethesda when with fallout first because i wanted them to have more time to get up to speed for the next elder scrolls game. given the state fallout is in currently it looks like they could use it. with fallout they can get away with it a bit because the game is set in a wasteland so that makes things a bit easier on the hardware.

Fallout. (but not Bethesda's trash)

1, 2 and New Vegas.

Daggerfall and Morrowind were cool, but they were before Toddler and co. really sold out to casuals took over full control.

Fallout. The original 2 games and New Vegas push it past TES for me. They have phenomenal environments and great writing and characters. Bethesda games tend to lack good writing and stories. They almost never have any memorable characters either.

New Vegas is one of my favorite games off all time.

Skyrim was trash, Oblivion wasn't much better

Fallout 3 had major issues, but was still enjoyable.

Obsidian Fallout wins.

Morrowind is still one of my favorite games to this day despite aging pretty horrendously. Very interesting setting and a fantastic premise behind the story. Overall it's a very well put together game that didn't rely on cliché's and a high fantasy setting.

If Bethesda could recapture that magic again for me, that would be great.

Morrowind was a good game. It had a unique world to explore, that was genuinely interesting because of how alien it all felt. Not just that, but the world was filled with this deep layer of nicely written lore that, if digested, enhanced the experience and atmosphere tenfold. One of these days i'm going to sit down with this game and mod it to Hell and back just so i can have a fresh take on it.

Yeah, besides that, i can't really say Bethesda is my thing. Their games are way to shallow, and because of my limited schedule i can't find the commitment required to jump into them. I just feel i'm wasting my time wen i can enjoy better experiences, and wasting time is something i can't afford.

Fallout, on the other hand, is one of my favorite series ever. Specifically Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout: New Vegas.

Elder Scrolls by a very wide margin. I definitely like Fallout games, but I've never invested more than 50 hours in any one of them, whereas I have over 750 hours logged in the past 3 Elder Scrolls games at the moment, and am still nowhere near being finished with Skyrim.

I can see why you'd like TES' lore better though, it's absolutely massive.

I've said this in previous threads before.

TES games has more pieces playing off in their games. The Elder Scrolls are games that represent their lore. Not their main story.

The Witcher games represent story. Not it's lore. Even though it does have lore, The Witcher games would be absolutely fine without it considering the great storytelling and presentation those games have. They could apply that level of writing to a baseless, lore-less foundation and the game would still have been amazing.

TES games are nothing without it's lore. And the lore is ridiculously detailed and extensive. It's so immersive. I can only praise TES games because of it.

Without the lore, you've got a terrible story each game has to offer. The only reason why a main story in TES games have weight is because they had more layers to the lore and it the way it makes the universe grow....

I don't like comparing The Witcher games to TES games....Both earn my respect but in different regards. The Witcher is definitely more all-round and in my opinion more significant. But I'm a sucker for lore....

@MlauTheDaft: What are these "RPG elements" you speak of? What was in FO3 and NV that isn't in FO4?
