recently downloaded the binary domain title, and yes its a gears rip off, but at the same time it has a very japanese flair to it thats hard to explain. it does some things a generic gears game couldn't do. I think one of the places where japanese devs excel is when making insane over-the-top action that is a feast for the senses. a lot of times i prefer games with a japanese touch

what about you?

I loved that vanquish was the japanese take on gears. Faster action, bigger baddies too bad they still can't tell a story for the life of them. The soap opera melodrama is not good.

If the japanese touch is done in a way as say...Demon's Souls or Shadow of the Colossus...then most definitely. The big eyes, big hair, guys are girls and vice versa, emos, annoying ditz etc...yeah...japan can keep that stuff.

Agreed.

There's just something about Japanese games that feels more magical than western games.

I don't 'prefer' it, but it just so happens that a vast majority of my favorite games are Japanese developed.

Not anymore.

It's like Disney World, it used to be cutting edge. Now it's trapped because of what people expect.

Japanese games are held back by nostalgia. They're trapped in that mold and can't seem to get free.

The japanese touch was okay like 15 years. The problem started when games storytelling evolved even more and the nonsense melodrama became really noticeable. The gameplay is still good but devs from other places have already caught up and some have more digestible storytelling.

Lawl, you're better off reading a book or watching a film if you want good storytelling. You're in the wrong medium, bro.

Also, your statement is plain wrong. There's tons of Japanese-made games that people like for their storytelling.

I used to but a lot of japanese developers seem to be stuck in a cycle that they should have evolved out of 10 years ago. Now I find their reluctance to change annoying and the fans who think they should continue to stagnate even more annoying.

They need some new blood and ideas, fast. ESPECIALLY in RPGs.

And no, they shouldn't try to copy the west, they should do their own thing.

It's really hit or miss for me. I just played through Shadows of the Damned, and I enjoyed it for the most part, but some of the humor was just dumb. Really really dumb. Almost weird just for the sake of being weird.

did you just start gaming this generation? how could you say that?

its disturbing to me that many seem to believe japanese games were never good to begin just because the devs are percieved to be 'stuck in a rut' right now

I don't enjoy any of the games they make. I like Sports, MMOs, FPS, and RTS. Outside of FFXI and the MGS series there isn't a Japanese game I can say I really enjoyed. This is going back to the mid 90's.

Yeah, like flop miserably.

Japanese "touch" usually means the game isn't going to be that great these days.

why would you consider that a flop? I doubt any place has hyped it to AAA status and a score like an 8/10 (AA) from a harsh reviewer like Eurogamer is pretty good. I mean...that's what they also rated Gears of War 1 and 3. This is the yakuza team's first shooter too.

yes, i like japanese games and i like games that are proud to be japanese, but i wouldnt limit "japanese" to meaning over-the-top. shadow of the colossus has some western oriented forbidden fruit themes, but it also has a japanese zen-like quality to its overworld thats more subdued than anything. a lot of over-the-top japanese games like no more heroes and vanquish are really playing off western tropes.

Yes. As far as Japanese games go, in long running series, they tend to keep things fresh by putting new spins on the gameplay and art style, ect. Also they take more time with sequels so you don't feel overloaded with one certain series.

Where as in the west, we come up with one thing, make the same game over and over and release it yearly with minimal improvements and run it into the ground until it isn't any fun any more, then we come up with a new thing, and repeat the cycle.

It depends on the kind of Japanese touch. If it's the crazy, fun kind of Japanese, yes. If it's the slavishly cliche-driven anime kind of Japanese, no.

Yes, most of my favorite games are Japanese in one way or another. However, some of them, for instance Radiant Historia, don't really "feel" Japanese.

I feel that people stereotype Japanese games too much, especialy RPG's. Look at Radiant Historia; the protagonist is in his twenties, he's interesting as a character, and the only character that's remotely weird is Marco. However, they are all well developed and have tons of personality not found in alot of western games. Another good example is Knights in the Nightmare. Basically, everything about that game is anything but cliche.

No better than western releases, you seem to mean good japanese touch rather than japanese touch. Just looks at star ocean tlh, the most japanese stuff was some of the worst of it, the gameplay that a western company could've come up with was it's biggest redeeming factor.

I could say so, yes...

My gaming taste is more "console-oriented" and it happens to be that many games I like are of Japanese origin.

However, I would lie if I said that there aren't many brilliant Western games as well.

Each region tends to have its high points, but I wouldn't say any region has titles from every genre that are best-in-class

Japanese developers are on the backfoot. Some of my previous favourite developers have turned to **** this generation because of an over reliance on archaic brands and mechanics. Capcom for example. I used to love capcom. Now look at it.

Not to mention the little 11 year old girls with massive breasts and the spiky haired emos saving the world from "fate" or something else ridiculous. That is not to say there aren't any developers worth anything over there, it's just becoming rarer these days.

I don't think even starting gaming this gen would leave anyone to that conclusion. There have been numerous, high quality Japanese games to come out to both critical acclaim and commercial success. Sure, fanboys who only play M-rated shooters might not think they are that great, but who cares what they have to say anyways?

I tend more for WRPGs than JRPGs, but if a JRPG is good enough then I won't mind the over$+y|ized "Japanese Touch" it has.

Honestly,I kinda used to but not that much anymore,at all.

Especially this gen where there´s barely any japanese games that I really enjoyed, exceptions would be the Yakuza games,Persona 3 and 4 if they count as current gen and not much more.
