[QUOTE="black_chamber99"]did you just start gaming this generation? how could you say that?foxhound_fox
I don't think even starting gaming this gen would leave anyone to that conclusion. There have been numerous, high quality Japanese games to come out to both critical acclaim and commercial success. Sure, fanboys who only play M-rated shooters might not think they are that great, but who cares what they have to say anyways?

The entire industry, *points to the multitude of games made to carter to this audience this gen*.

Not anymore.

It's like Disney World, it used to be cutting edge. Now it's trapped because of what people expect.

Japanese games are held back by nostalgia. They're trapped in that mold and can't seem to get free.

Funny because their games are more original and unique this gen like Professor Layton and Ghost Trick. Meanwhile on the West, they still keep making games where you kill.

I am highly Westernized. MGS is pretty much the only Japanese game with Japanese influence in it that I can enjoy. Everything else just doesn't feel right to me. Mario doesn't count since it isn't exactly Japanese.

Always interested that Japanese gaming fans get offended when you make any observation on their gaming industry then trot this ridiculous line out.

I mean it doesn't have Japanese-y stuff that you'd find in something like a JRPG like guys with long and colorful hair, ninjas, the visual style found in a lot of JRPGs or the combat style, etc. It doesn't count in my books since its not like any other Japanese games I've played.

I don't care about the Japanese gaming industry or what's big in Japan, etc. All i care about are the games. I love both Western and Japanese as you can see from my games list and i'm not a Westerner. I even play SC2. The fact is the Japanese still create great games that can match the West. There's a reason why Ghost Trick got so many awards in the West. The difference is that the high quality Japanese games this gen are more obscure and handheld focused while the popular franchises like FF are getting bashed.

Not all but most of them obviously at least in the mainstream scene. Of course it's different for the indie game development scene where you can find more original games. It's not as if it's a bad thing though. It's just refreshing to see a game where you need to save lives instead of killing it like Ghost Trick.

Thats all very nice but you're completely ignoring the fact that you made the same tired gibe about western developers only making shooters. You shouldn't have. Couldn't care less about the rest of your post.

I'd like to see what Japanese developers could do with shooters though, even though I generally dislike that genre.

Yeah "they still keep making games where you kill" implies Western games are limited to shooters... Even Mario kills mushrooms and turtles hah! Reading comprehension FTW!

I like "imaginative" japanese flair games, like Mario or Xenoblade, but when they start doing those generic japanese things that everyone thinks of (giant weapons, overcomplicated storylines with love story, stupid dialogue, generic fantasy elements, the storyline "unlikely hero discovers hidden power / becomes chosen one and defeats ultimate evil", etc) things just become to stupid for me to care. Most JRPGs I've played are guilty of this, and even FF, one of my favorite game series of all times, has become the poster-boy for the "japanese style games" most people think about. Most Japanese "style" games I don't care for, but those ones that break the mold are almost always fun. Japan comes up with some unusual ideas, and that is what makes those quirkier games all the more interesting to play.

I loved that vanquish was the japanese take on gears. Faster action, bigger baddies too bad they still can't tell a story for the life of them. The soap opera melodrama is not good. Bread_or_Decide
This has been my experience to great degree as well. I love the games but often the stories are so melodramatic. To me a story is a piece of the pie that is gaming that I enjoy.

If you mean a Japanese touch like Deadly premonition (That game had the worst shoooting mechanic I ever saw, horrible graphics, full of glitches...etc) yet I couldnt stop playing it till I beat it.

I think Final Fantasy X on the PS2 was the last Japanese style game I enjoyed. I just don't care for the stories, characters, music, or the overall 'feel' of that style anymore.
