I'm sure someone at Sony is kicking themselves in the head to see MS make so much money for Xbox Live. Do you think they will end up charging next gen? Thoughts SW?

i don't know. tbo i don't know if they can at this point.
free online is a great marketing point and they could easily just make devs responsible for their own online like they do now so it keeps their costs down.
i don't think it will be a flat out fee but something else like loading up psn with free to play type games where you pay to access features.
They will.
They have noticed how successful Live is on the 360, and they want to be a part of it, too. Expect PSN Elite with PS4.
PS4 will charge, and they will claim its due to either the added security costs, or to 'new' tech for their network. Eitherway, i'm sure they will end up charging, since right now they are losing out on a payment method that MS alone is chashing in on. From a business perspective, they want that money too.
If they do...then count me out, I won't support a company that charges for something that should be free.
I think that they will keep what they have now and maybe MS will add online play to Silver users.
If Sony does charge then oh well. People will eventually start paying.
In POTM Sony said that they would "consider other options in reagrds to onlive service", "including a pay service". Which is the same thing The XBOX 360 has now.

I sense a bit of hostility in your post. Why?:D
No hostility. It just made me laugh when I read it.
No I don't, in fact I think MS is going to drop the online fee next gen. Especially considering how Live is on PC now and it's FREE! Yeah that's right it is the SAME EXACT THING as the console xbox live on 360 but it's FREE! It has all the features (cross chat ect...) and those stupid avatars and everything else. I don't know about you guys but you can't justify it, MS is giving the SAME thing for FREE to one group but charging the other group for it. And considering how MS has no reason to charge for MP except for the fact that they can get away with it and people keep paying. That's it.
Here's the thing, and the Lems don't seem to be aware of this, FREE online gaming is the industry standard, and it has always been. MS is the ONLY one to charge you in order to play part of the game you already paid full price for over your own internet. PC, PS3, hell even Nintendo has free online. It IS the industry standard and now that PSN has been improved it really makes people question the value of xbox live. And then there is Steam which is also FREE and it smashes the argument of paying for online MP into the ground!
But then again these companies are all about money and that's it. But I wonder what would happen if MS dropped the online fee on Live and let Silver members play but just saved Gold member for all that extra fluff (cross chat ect..) I bet you that alot of 360 guys would cancel their Gold subscription, I doubt they really care about the Live features like they say they do.

I really wish people would quit saying the PC has free online.
99% of game servers exist because guess what? CONSUMERS pay for them through donations.
And of course there are a handful of MMOs out there like WoW, EVE, and FFXI that charge players a monthly fee to play.
Seriously, quit bringing up the PC as having free online. If there are no gamers paying for it then there'd be no online on the PC.

Do I pay to play on PC? Nope not a cent. So there goes your argument. Unless your talking about MMO's but they don't count.
They need to, IMO. They're losing money off of their online division daily by offering online play for free.
Considering how often PSN is down, i can't see how they could charge for it. Who would pay? And no cross game chat.. c'mon. I just hope PS4 lets users change profiles without having to exit to the dashboard every time!

Often? Its not like its daily thing and the only serious moment of down was when it was hacked that was it. Also yea its so dang hard changing that profile. I can never get those 5-10 seconds back.
i dont think they will as its been a big deal with them moving consoles. But if they do then i wont get ps4 till a big price drop.
I don't think anybody should be happy about the race to the bottom of the "rip off consumers" barrel IF Sony does decide to charge for online play. PC gamers do it for free. We pay good money for unlimited internet connections, in many cases against the will of corporations who want to restrict or bottleneck our access, and then we should be happy about paying even more to play a game online? When all we are going is using our own internet to connect directly onto another persons console?
Could it happen? Sure. Sony could definitely feel compelled to follow the money. But that doesn't make it good or right for gamers. It is a rip off.
