They'll keep it FREE like its always been. But will emphasize way more on convincing their fanbase to pay for PS+ by giving it a plethora of features that more than justify its yearly subscritions.

Here's the thing, and the Lems don't seem to be aware of this, FREE online gaming is the industry standard, and it has always been. MS is the ONLY one to charge you in order to play part of the game you already paid full price for over your own internet. PC, PS3, hell even Nintendo has free online. It IS the industry standard and now that PSN has been improved it really makes people question the value of xbox live. And then there is Steam which is also FREE and it smashes the argument of paying for online MP into the ground!
Ly_the_Fairy
I really wish people would quit saying the PC has free online.
99% of game servers exist because guess what? CONSUMERS pay for them through donations.
And of course there are a handful of MMOs out there like WoW, EVE, and FFXI that charge players a monthly fee to play.
Seriously, quit bringing up the PC as having free online. If there are no gamers paying for it then there'd be no online on the PC.
Have you ever considered the thought that when you bought the game you already paid for that stuff? MMOs are different because we would think the developers are still working on the game throughout.Sony will charge.
1.Network Security/Maintenance
2.Digital Distribution
This isn't the PS2 days where you just connected to a simple deathmatch for online. Network technology and gaming is growing and it cost money to support it. It's going to come down to who is more creative with the paid online service.
Want to game online for free, save up for a gaming PC.
Sony will charge.

So well put. Bravo sir, Bravo.
Sony starting to charge for online would give Wii U a big advantage. In the end, Wii U (by the time PS4/NeXbox come out) would be: 1) A well established console 2) More hardcore with great first party and third party support and 3) The only console left with free online.
when people bring up that nintendo wii online is free? take what the nintendo wii online service is, would you even consider paying in the first place? i think you see why the wii online service is free. now with ps3, yes it offers a nice online service for free but to adapt for the future i believe they'll need to look at a paid online service. pc is in a different category, its open to anybody. nintendo,ms, and sony = closed console. you cut out most of the luxuaries that the pc offers because everything is in control of the company when dealing with consoles.BigBadBully
Wii online is bad. Wii U online won't be bad since they're supposedly fixing all the problems that the Wii had.
They won't charge but will have the PS+ service with much better features than is currently available.JohnF111The PS+ is proof that Sony might charge for online play. MSoft proved that people are willing to spend $50( now $60) a year to play online. I won't be surprised if PS+ is the only way to play online games on PS4 and even Vita.
I don't see why Sony would, seeing as PS+ is working well for them at the moment. Like others have said in the topic, one of the draws of the PS3 is the free network play, which was the huge draw for me.
If Sony does decide to make this BS move of charging for online play, then it's PC gaming for me.

AND the fact not everyone is not xbl and there are people on PSN proves there are those that arent willing to pay for online. Sony knows this is one of the cards they have against MS. They wont give it up easly as some may think.

Do I pay to play on PC? Nope not a cent. So there goes your argument. Unless your talking about MMO's but they don't count.
So you mooch? Great argument. Too bad those servers you play on are still paid for BY GAMERS. And I like how MMOs don't count :D[QUOTE="ShadowMoses900"][QUOTE="Ly_the_Fairy"]

Unless your counting your internet service which I wouldint count in this discusion.

People host servers for games, and they do not do it entirely out of the kindness of their hearts. Those servers stay up because gamers donate to them. Luckily for cheap gamers there's enough donations made to where you can get by without paying.
But on a smaller scale, like say my friend who pays $30 a month to host a Minecraft server for our group of friends, no. We all have to chip in, or we don't get to play online.
That's how PC gaming works. It's not like there are thousands upon thousands of servers all being hosted for free. Gamers are paying for those to be there. Not Valve, not Tripwire, not Blizzard. GAMERS

It has nothing to do with being a cheap gamer. Theres nothing telling you people are paying to keep this up. I have never ever ran into a sign like that hwen I played a PC game online.
they'll probably have to. their online service this gen has been awfulmems_1224
Thats a good one. PSN is very far from awful.
If sony starts charging for online play next gen then the only console I'll consider picking up is the Wii U.Moriarity_what makes you think that nintendo will have free online ?
Next gen all big budget games will comw with overly expensive DLC, and all online must be paid twice for, or three times.
For the audience it doesn't matter much, they would happily pay more for whatever you throw at them. For me it does.
I just 'know' that buying a M$ or Sony system would be a horrible idea next gen, cause they are likely going to raise prices for the services like crazy. And they're going to have many revisions and schemes. I think next gen will be the ultimate milkage gen.
I dunno,
With more and more people getting annoyed with XBL putting up ads, charging for content that is free on PSN, giving devs far less freedom(think Steam), and being the only company that charges to play online, the question you may want to ask is:
Do you really think that Microsoft WILL be able to charge for online next gen?????????
Then I just realized, given that this gen, we have seen just how much 360 owners are willing to put up with, I guess the answer is YES8)
I don't know if they will, but if it means a much better, higher quality service, then they probably should.
Again people here are mixing what they want and reality IMO. The reality is MS is making insane sums of money off a service imo that should be free but they have every right to charge for it (as long as xbl product is worth the money). Sony has been Losing tons of money of there online service and as a company in general. So u can assume that Sony will not want to continue this trend and will start charging for online play. i know its a trump card that sony has over the 360 but the cost of having that trump card could run the company in administration or what ever. and not having sony in the gaming industry would be bad for all gaming parties regardless of the brand u like. Allthishate
Sony will be fine, they make their money from PSN+ and Home ( which sucks by the way ).
Correction... they will suck your blood in the end,I on the other hand won't be paying a dime for online gaming.i will pay ,as i do with xbox live, online is mandatory to a gamer at this point,to have the full expirience from a game you have to go online so yeah... they will suck our blood in the end .. :)
skanjos
The SP magic 8 ball says... Bank on it !! :P
EDIT:  I read "won't" as "will" so yeah, that should make clearer my position.
It doesn't matter to me. Business wise it'd make a lot of sense for Sony to charge for at least a premium service of their online. Whether they charge or not I'll still get a PS4. Sony has so many strong IP's and first party studios, that I could live paying for online just to keep playing their games.
Sony wants to make money, but they aren't THAT greedy lol. Come on now, charging for online? Thats absurd.

I'm pretty sure they are going to charge something. The only reason it was free for the PS3 is because it was in last place and trying to play catch up. After all lots a people bought a PS3 because of it's free online.
[QUOTE="Wasdie"]its making them too much money, it would be crazy for ms to do other wise exactly. Too many people argue based on what they want to happen, as opposed to what will happen.I think that Sony will keep it's current stratagy of free online with a premium service. I think Microsoft would be crazy to not go with such a system.

Money isn't everything,i am sure that they can rip off people but up until when is the real question. The PS Vita will have free online play with party chat,so i don't see sony fallowing the road of pay to play, free online play is a big part of the PS brand now, what we may see for sure is a richer experience next gen which would still be free of a fee,and sony expanding even more PSN+ which is the right idea.I'm sure someone at Sony is kicking themselves in the head to see MS make so much money for Xbox Live. Do you think they will end up charging next gen? Thoughts SW?
Heroldp813
They're NOT.
Free Online Play = PS3 selling point.
Having to pay for PSN will likely make Sony lose a helluva lot of PS3 gamers.
If they do, I'll quit console gaming forever. And move on to PC.
I don't think they'll lose a lot of gamers, and all they really have to do is be a couple dollars cheaper than their nearest competitor. You're more likely to see price competition than no price at all. And PC really isn't the free escape it's made out to be, most expenses are paid directly to the game companies (this is mainly on MMO's though). They're NOT.
