Not exactly related to software but I've bought a 2014 PS4 model back in Feb. 2015 and I felt myself like a Beta Tester. I paid BRL 1900.00 to play Bloodborne and my console wasn't able to handle my connection properly. I always recognized around 40% of my real speed. Sadly I only suspected about this when one friend of mine bought a PS4 2 years later. Not sure if I'm ever buying a console again after that.
Rarely. Needs to be a Publisher I trust for quality (e.g. Valve) or good word of mouth from people I respect.
Day 1 for certain titles with things I don't want spoiled or a multiplayer game I don't want to be left at a big disadvantage for by getting later. MEGATON God of War and Detroit Become Human are day 1's for examples. And I'll do my best to stay off the Internet while playing. Something like Far Cry 5 and Tomb Raider are whatever and whenever , I don't care about spoilers.
Almost never. I don't even find the preorder discounts compelling. Most games are still cheaper AND patched within 3-6 months. With literally thousands of games spanning decades to choose from, who the hell needs day 1? The only exception I understand is MP games where the community will drop off fast. But, then, that still doesn't require "day 1" to enjoy, nor does it sound like a good game with lasting appeal
So how long would the Video game industry last if everyone stopped purchasing day one?
The Gaming Industry would still last, once developers get the message that they have to stop releasing games with game breaking bugs, and milking them with overpriced DLC, more gamers would purchase on Day 1, we may even get a lower launch price.
There would probably be a decrease in single player games before that, since people still purchase multiplayer games on Day 1. lol
I usually don't, but if it's a game I feel like I really need/want to support then I will get it day one or near launch. Or at the very least, I get it at full price within the first few months.
Case in point, the other day I bought a copy of Kingdom Come, paid quite a bit total for it. It's been out for a month. I probably won't get to play it for a while yet. Still, those sales matter.
I feel like that was a game that deserved my support since I've been following it for a while and it wound up being something unique and interesting. Kingdom Come was never going to have the same appeal as The Elder Scrolls, but I still want to show devs, "Yes, there are gamers who like games that stray from the usual."
If the game is exciting enough, then I get it day.
Some disadvantages I can think of for late adopters:
1. Missing the zeitgeist. It's a lot funner to play a game when everyone is excited about it. E.g. Pokemon go.
2. For online multiplayer games, it may be difficult to join because the skill level is too high and you're new. Even if it had good matchmaking, over time, the pool of players to select from can get too small. E.g. counter strike.
I'm usually late to the party on games while I wait for price drops. But I'm in no rush, I have such a back log it works out. Sales got me Witcher 3 Complete Edition for $20, Assassin's Creed Origins for $30, Mass Effect Andromeda for $10 (I know, I know). Pretty sure I got COD WWII for $40 just a month after release. Wait for sales.
Most of the times, yes. I like to be in the middle of a hype, with people streaming on Twitch or discussing on message boards.
It's a 50/50 for me .. Usually I buy the Nintendo games I'm really hyped about from day one (like Mario, Zelda and Metroid) .. other times I buy Ninty games 3-6 months down the road .. sometimes new sometimes used .. it's known that their games don't drop in price by a lot so either way you are not losing a lot of money ..
For ps4 games, I only buy day one the games that are either cheap on release (like Yakuza Kiwami or Shadow of the Colossus) or games I absolutely want to play day one (like GoW for example) ..
3rd party games most of the time I buy new or used 3-6 months down the road ..
