With the recent rise in mobile gaming, I became a sceptic if it's still stuck in the N-Gage era, playing some junk apps on my brother's iPhone, I brushed it off as "casual" and "not serious" as I did many years ago. Now that I have my Xperia Play, I am overblown by the amount of legit games there is on the Android, and, Xperia Play itself.

I'm telling you, Gameloft have seriously stepped it up. Even ports, such as Dead Space, Battle Field 2, NFS, and the Sims 3, are actually quite GOOD, although I have no clue if it follows the story/original game or not. :P

Not to mention old school emulators, which enables us to play what we considered real gaming back then too. Stuff like Tekken 3, Street Fighter II are all easily played on it. Then we have the JRPGs, oh man, the JRPGs, Zenonia, Demon Hunter, and Eve of the Geneisis are all quite entertaining. There's also MMOs and casual Wii styled games out like Lets Golf too it seems.

So yeah, I'm pretty pleased with the direction mobile gaming is headed at and I'm getting into the whole social networking, email, and texting thang too.

Where's your stance on it? Is it a serious medium for gaming to you now?

At this moment in time, no I don't.

Mindsets will likely change in five years though when mobile gaming is one of the largest markets.:(

I think mobiles can have good games. Right now I don't take it as serious and console game or dedicated gaming handhelds.

Devices dedicated to Gaming will always beat out mobile/phone games to me. Make all the arguments you like but unless a device has buttons/sticks for controlling the game then it fails as a gaming device as far as im concerned regardless of how good a particular game may be.

Quite good for a handheld game. None of those is anywhere close to their concole/PC version.

Star Battalion can be considered a real game because it is. I just don't care for most games on mobile devices, thus not taking it seriously.

No, mostly because there's only a few games that actually have good controls. Only games that were on old consoles are worth playing and they're a pain because my phone doesn't have a keyboard.

Yeah, I agree, there's way too many indie junks out there, but you would be surprised by how many games are similar to Star Battalion, especially those that came out from the same company and other renowned ones (EA, Gamevil, etc)

Nope. I play games on my Android phone, but I would never consider actually purchasing a cell phone game and nor would I consider replacing any of my dedicated gaming platforms with a cell phone. Free games like Angry Birds and Paper Toss are a decent distraction, but if I want to play a full-fledged handheld title I'll look to my 3DS, DS, or PSP. I prefer my handheld to have proper gaming controls, physical media, and decent battery life. If I played as many cell phone games as I do 3DS games I would have to charge my phone 24/7.

There are some good games. Zenonia is a good example, and the most recent one is free I think.

Victorious_Fize

Most people who haven't taken a serious look into the platforms will tend to blow them off, because with the huge number of titles and new releases daily, it can be hard to find some of the best games without friends, forums, and review sites to help you get started. Mobile devices are certainly capable of quality games in a variety of genres, and those that don't realize it yet will eventually. Predjudices can be difficult to overcome.

To me it's exactly like browser gaming. There are some games I like there and all, but I'm not a fan of this medium, just a consumer of it.

The day iOS/Android devices have buttons, I will consider them proper handhelds. Until them, I consider cellphone gaming to be the 'Wii' of the mobile gaming space- leading in marketshare, getting lots of support (mostly in the form of cheap junk), but not quite in the same league as the true handhelds.

Haha, yes, he is pretty annoying. :P I just wish Gameloft would distance itself from outright copying, not that it's a bad/cheap counterfeit or anything like that mind you.

The question here is about whether Mobile's gaming capabilities is to be considered serious or not as a gaming method. It's not about the cell's original purpose, nor is it about comparing it to handhelds. Somehow, I think most people here who say no have these factors in mind... Samurai Vengeance 2Sacred OdysseyFantastic KnightRavensword Come on guys, aside from the controllers critique (which Xperia Play's advancement in the industry and rising gaming potential hopefully abolishes), the graphics, renowned companies, and great games, are now there. KOEI actually released a couple of games not long ago, but that's a little irrelevant...
