I for one think CGI is great but it takes away from the game once you start playing because the game your playing looks no where near as good. I think CGI shouldn't be used anymore, next gen is almost here and I don't think we should rely on CGI anymore when the visuals can do so especially with graphics nowadays.

There's no real need for pre-rendered cutscenes anymore. Gaming hardware has gotten to the point where developers can use the in-game engine to decently show most setpieces.

Yes it should be used more often next-gen. If both consoles will be using 50GB Blu-Ray, I see why not. I get more mad when I see an in-game video look like crap compared to the actual gameplay because it had to be compressed so much just so it could fit on the Xbox 360's DVD9.

I like them using CGI in scenes as they are in most games more of a reward than breaking my immersion.

The in engine fmv in uncharted 2 was so seemless that it fooled me into thinking the game was better looking than it actually was. Not necessarily a bad thing.

Ever since Mgs1 though, I've always prefered ingame cut scenes.

No to CGI cutscenes. I didn't think they were even neccessary last gen. I also think cutscenes should be cut down in general. It's always best when the story is happening around the gameplay.

CGI cutscenes in a Blizzard games usually play when you complete a chapter or episode. Blizzard fans see CGI as a reward upon completing a mission. Also, Blizzard CGI looks far better than anything next-gen games can dream to achieve. So, why cut CGI out completely? They are not like Square Enix CGI where it appears too often in their games.

Depends on the game, i don't mind CGI cutscenes in things like RTS games because the engine and models typically aren't set up for fancy cinematic.

I don't think we should rely on CGI anymore when the visuals can do so especially with graphics nowadays.Blazerdt47

CGI will literally always look better than contemporary real-time graphics.

Personally I think it's a waste of money, but then the companies doing it usually have the most money to waste.

Hell no, pre-rendered cutscenes always end up looking like crap to me due to being lower-than-native resolution and compressed to hell due to consoles.

If you seriously think next-gen visual can resemble Blizzard/SquareEnix level CGI, you need to get your eyes checked. Yes, games are getting closer and closer to CGI-level visual, but only CGI from 10 years ago.

Agni Philosophy, a Square Enix in-engine demo, looks terrible next to FF VERSUS XIII CGI.

I agree, the huge contrast between the visual quality of CGI cutscenes and regular gameplay hurts the immersion.

No on PC it looks nasty. You go from 720p or less video to a sharp 1080 crisp image in game.

Some sequences can be more epic with CGI, so, in some cases, yes (intro, ending, etc). Let's not forget that the gap between in engine and CGI will be smaller, next gen, so CGI won't look as decontextualized as it has been in previous generations.

I think most of the games I like don't really feature CG or hardly any cutscenes; I like when the story is told in the game similar to Metroid Prime or similar Half-life 2.

modern games like crysis 2 where you are forced to watch a long ass kid scene on first level before you can start running and gunning ruin gaming or all this dumbass scripted realtime cutscene bs like uncharted.

Games like God of War, Dead space and Uncharted do it well I think, their cutscenes are higher resolution and use better assets than in game, but they use the engine to make them so it still looks really good but less jarring and they transition very well.

Going down a corridor and trigering a CG scene and then back to gameplay every 5 minutes is way too up and down for me. The game looks fine when playing then looks amazing in CG scenes and then the in game stuff looks less impressive afterwards. Then you get used to it and settle back in and it happens all over again. I much prefer consistency

Young people need to understand just because something's new doesnt mean it's better than something old.

Old stuff is usually more quality built like old cars.

One exception does not make the rule. Also PCs go much higher than 1080p.

Clarity is a major issue with them. You just haven't a clue what you're talking about

CGI is always step ahead of the realtime rendering and always allow to express more and i won't belive that Blizzard and aspecially Squere Enix (with Eidos) won't use CGI atleast in trailers
