Poll Do you think Doom 4 will be dumbed down? (48 votes)

Yes 31%
Again, yes 23%
No 46%

My friends, having been on a binge with the video game series "Serous Sam 3", which involves using various fire-arms against alien beings. Something profound occurred.

From suffering from heart-burn from eating an orange, I asked myself "what sets it apart from Doom".

The map design. Serous Sam has large, simple maps, while Doom I/II have highly complex maze like constructed maps.

I ask you, the people. Will Doom 4's level design be simplified for modern console consumer sensibilities to the point, it might as well not be called "Doom"?

@uninspiredcup: Roman Ribaric sends his regards for talking highly about his game.

Doom 4 will have to implement new trends if it wants to sell. It's simple as that.

Doom 1 and 2 aren't hardcore. They are just too simple for today's standards.

Doom 3 is a different story. It still is an amazing FPS. Imho, if they just made a HD remake with new graphics bells and whistles, I'd be happy like a pig in mud.

I think if it wasn't dumbed down it wouldn't sell. The pop crowd doesn't like to learn new things. It will also be designed around the controller which means the mouse hand will be bored alot.

Comment of the week.

Doom has always been incredibly dumb unless you play it against human players who know what they're doing. Quake was even more dumb, they gave up even pretending it was anything more than a tech demo at that point.

If Doom 4 isn't dumb, it stops being Doom and becomes something else.

Health regen. Super linear levels. Slow gameplay. QTEs. Sony movie-games.

You can get a lot more dumb/simple than Doom/Quake.

I suppose there are Doom levels of dumb then there are The Order levels of mindbogglingly dumb. Maybe simplistic is a better word. The early Doom games were simplistic and that was the beauty of them. In MP you wanted that simplicity so you could concentrate on just killing every fucker you were playing against. The game itself was dumb but the level design was glorious so in MP it was the best possible experience at the time.

The OP however (and you) are talking about things that only matter in the single player game. I have never played Doom mainly for SP though I had a blast in the first and second getting used to the levels in SP and Quake was one of the worst single player games I have ever played. I hated Quake till Quake Arena when they suddenly remembered how to design proper deathmatch levels again.

Basically I don't really care how good or bad SP Doom 4 is if the MP is anywhere NEAR classic Doom.

Man all the PC gamers going angry against console gamers, Doom was ported to consoles and it works with the level design and all that, it's possible to get a game this generation to do what doom did level wise back then it just takes the devs to go "Lets do it"

Yeah but that was back when console wasn't nearly as dumbed down as these days.

It used to have some of the most challenging/best games.

All the mazes did was pad the games out with filler. I wouldn't consider making them a bit smaller dumbing down.

And with that, the death of gaming.

Woe.

I'd be on board with big levels if all the corridors don't look the same and there is more to it than finding keys. I like Doom 1-2 but not for the level design, it was the atmosphere, cool weapons, demons, etc. If they go with regen health and two weapon limit I'm out.

HP regen, limited weapons, linear maps, auto-aim, QTEs.

Wolfenstein New Order had much of all that and still managed to be quite entertaining.

There is no way it can be as lousy of a game as Doom 3. I'm hoping for a Wolfenstein'd balance of taking old design ideas with modern design ideas and making a cool balance between the two. Only way more actiony, and way less story. Wolfenstein needed to shut up more.

Also ITT: A bunch of people that don't get what actually makes Doom an enjoyable game. loldumbeddown are u serious?

Dumbed down how?

I played the shit out of the first two Doom games back in the day, and I don't remember them being these highly complex FPS's.

Do you think TC will ever stop making bad threads?

probably no. Hey TC how can doom been dumbed down exactly ? You know is not exactly a highly tactical game. My only fear about it is regenerating health. As long as they dont do that then all is good

I honestly want to see more genres embrace the level design of metrovania games.. They did this in Dark Souls.. And really it's the best level adaption I can think of for most rpg's/fps's/action games etc etc.. It provides enough freedom and choices you would expect from a open world game, while giving the kind of focus and pacing of a linear campaign. I would so love Doom 4 to go this route in level design.. I thought Bioshock 1 was going that route, and early previews made it out to be that way.. But alas it wasn't.

if anything Doom 4 will be best in series. as an old school PC gamer Doom 1 and 2 are too outdated and they dont even have free mouse look. Brutal Doom is much better with all mouse support

Yeah.... you got somethings mixed up. limited weapons refers to putting a limit on the amount of weapons that can be carried, but we all know TNO has no limit to the amount you can carry. HP regen stops at 20, I believe. And as oppose to most military shooters, if I am correct, the maps are big enough to allow exploration and support stealth and guns blazing playstyles.

I think it will be dumbed down since this industry has proven me that nowadays everything has to be slowerpaced stuff optimized for console gameplay.

Was Duke Nukem Forever old school? Nope it had health regen and totally linear covershooter level design without any secrets. Was Hard Reset old school? Nope it had shield regen, "2 weapon system", completely linear levels with no verticality. Was Quake Live steam release un-touched? Nope it was dumbed down with universal ammo pickups, added non-quake weapon loadout system.. Doom 4 will not be something that would compare to The Ultimate DOOM or Shadow Warrior (1997) forexample. Doom 4 will be most likely something like Alien Rage (2013) very non-old school.

This will happen yet again, i'm very confident of that.
