I would think most gamers don't actually buy games at full prices. There are so many options to buy a game at a discount even before it comes out. And then you have people who will wait no matter what for the game to be cheaper. Doesn't matter if they think it's worth it or not. You have kids/teenagers who don't have money, so they wait for their parents to buy it for them. Then you have college kids who say they are broke, and just pirate games. So that leaves the adults with jobs. Those people who will buy the game if they think it's worth it. Some are willing to spend a lot more than others. Some end up having kids, and don't have as much time to play games.

So where do you fit in all of this, SW? Do you pay the full price tag for games? Can you justify the price?

I got a job and can definitely afford to spend 60$ on a game if I want, most of the time I have done enough research on a title so all the games I buy are some I know I will enjoy:)

To be honest though, these day I buy a lot more AA titles than AAA, because they are usually more to my liking... and the tend to usually be a bit cheaper, but I don’t really care much about the price tag one way or another!

Battlefront II sure as hell ain't worth 60 euro.

Game should be free to play, and even then I doubt the price would be right.

In india games are very expensive including the taxes. 60$ is somehow fine with us. Increasing it is overkilling the market.

If people take issue over the price of a game, they can either not buy it at that price, look for bargains, receive it free as a birthday gift, or not buy it.

I used to buy games at full price before I was in university. Now that I work, I occasionally buy games at full price if it's a game I really want or my most loved franchise ever. The rest of the games I just wait for a price drop where I feel is the right price.

I think games are somewhat justifiable depending on how much content a single disc contain. Games like FIFA are definitely not justifiable, comes out every year and are priced at £50-45.

Yeah I think most games are worth the current initial release price point. While it’s naturally great to get games for less I’m pretty satisfied to get most of my games at the current full retail price.

They may be worth it, but I rarely pay full price these days. I’m definitely cheap/thrifty/whatever.

If prices increase, I’ll just wait for sharper discounts or I’ll stop buying as much as I do.

When it comes to "price/number of hours" ratio they are more then worth the $60 (actually 70€ in EU) price tag. However games get cheaper so quick that I really see no reason to fork full price to get a game at launch. There was a time where games took roughly a whole year or more to finally come down in price (and even that only at a minimal discount of 20% or something). Nowadays I see plenty of games at a 50% or more discount two months after it's release. For example, I recently bought Destiny 2 at 30€ TWO months after its release. Its a 40€ difference! In such a short amount of time! Sure, I lost the "hype train" of playing the game when everyone was talking about it but for 40€ less I'm good with that.

Seriously, whats the point of buying games at release date nowadays?! Especially close to Black Friday/Christmas when the games will be waaay less expensive fosho?!

If the game took way longer to come down in price I would probably buy more games at launch, cause they sure deserve it (some of them anyway), but as a "smart" consumer (notice the quotes. I'm not calling those who buy games at launch "dumb". If you have the income to do so then kudos to you for supporting developers), I aim for the better deal. Supply and demand. It's how the free market works...

Very few games now are worth full price and most games go on sale so fast that even if they are worth it you're better off waiting a month and saving $20.

I rarely buy games full price unless It's one of my highly anticipated titles. Some upcoming games that I'll pay full price for are RDR2, KH3, Dragon Quest XI, Ni No Kuni 2, Cyberpunk 2077, & Valkyria Chronicles 4

Depends on the game. I'm willing to pay full price for my most anticipated games but this happens once or twice a year. All other games I get on a discount.

Games are generally worth the money asked. That said, there is nothing preventing you from waiting for price drops if you so wish. They usually drop really quick these days too.

I haven't bought a game for more than... hmm... I think $20 CAD in the past 4-5 years.

I'm cheap because I don't have much of a gaming budget, so I don't buy stuff at full price because I can't really afford it. Which means I don't often see stuff until 1-2 years after it releases. And that's fine with me, I'm still catching up on my backlog.

I think it entirely depends, which is why I like a lot of these indie releases hitting the $20-$40 mark. Just because it's a big publisher, does not mean it's worth $60 (or more).

There are all levels of indies. They aren't all 8/16-bit artsy-fartsy games. Hellblade is technically an indie.

All my Switch games have been bought at a full price, a big part of my PS4 games have been bought at a full price and none of my Xbone games have been bought at a full price. Some are worth it ( Zelda, Mario, Bloodborne, The Witcher 3) and some are not.

Games in Canada are $80 plus tax it's $90.

So if it was $60 than no, I would think that's reasonable, but $90 not so much

@indzman Star Citizen is an indie.

Indie isn't a style, it's merely means "self-published".

I can afford to buy games at $60 CDN, though here $80 is the standard new price that I refuse to pay on principle. But even going by $60, just because I can doesn't mean I should, or anyone for that matter. Not so long as I have options, which today there is no shortage of.

It's a demonstration of the old expression; a fool and their money are soon parted with.

It depends on the game. Horizon, the Souls games, Persona 5, any Civ game, Fallout 4, Dragon Age etc all these are games that are worth full price to me at release.

If you play a game you really like for 50-60 hours and don't feel you've got your money worth well, you're not going to be happy no matter what.

Seeing that $79.99 CAD price tag on games on Steam is gross. Especially on games like Nier: Automata. FFS the game is 10 months old and still hasn't received a single official patch.

I bought Zelda and Mario at full price but Nintendo rarely discounts their games. I also bought Persona 5 at full price.

I finally work full time so I can afford to buy a full priced game once a month. I just don't have the same time I used to in order to beat a game quickly. So I actually overall spend less on new games.

If ever a question deserved the answer 'it depends on the game'..... This is it.

I'm usually okay with the price if I've gotten one enjoyable hour per US dollar. If the game is extremely enjoyable I'd be happy with one hour per every two dollars.

Games are cheaper now than during the NES era, if a game is worth X amount of money is a matter of opinion not fact. Now, if gamers are cheap ia also a matter of opinion, for us that gamed during the era of the Arcade gaming could become an expensive hobby, that was until you became good and master one game.

Not really. But I rarely pay $60 for a game. Especially a single player game. Theres literally no reason to pay full price for them other than just really liking the IP and wanting to support the devs since theres no time contraints on playing a single player game. Its the same experience no matter when you play it and usually better if you wait for the GoTY edition.

Only certain games get my $60 eg: Red Dead Redemption, GTA 5, Persona 5 etc.

Most get bought at $10-20 and that's if I simply don't borrow if from a friend and beat it that way.

If a game gives me 30 hours plus of entertainment, then I've gotten bang for my buck. I remember once buying a SP only game for $60 when I was younger, beat it in 5 hours and regretted buying it at such a high price. You're pretty safe with shooters and great online games for the $60.

As an old man, I say yes.

I remember being in 4th grade when we got our Sega Genesis and a lot of the games were around the $59.99 price point, especially if they were 4 megs or bigger.

Some launch games were in this price range like Revenge of Shinobi and Last Battle.

Some were in the $49.99 price range too, but this was 25 years ago mind you.

Some launch games were even more, Phantasy Star II was $80 and it was a launch game.

So yeah, i think $60 is reasonable, however I also usually buy games around the $30 price point since they are on sale so much.

I wouldn't mind spending 60 on many games if the housing market wasn't insanely expensive and most of my wages weren't stuck in that. However, since I'm a broke bastard, I wait for sales. :P

Its already cost that ($60) or more here in Australia anyway. Rarely buy games on release nowadays except very few titles. Usually will just wait till price drop for most games...even if it mean having to wait after few years. :P

that's where I'm at too. For a game to be worth $80 (closer to 90 with tax), it has to be practically a GOTY candidate. And for me it also isn't about being able to afford it necessarily, but the principle of the thing. It must be damaging these gaming companies to have to charge that much since sales in Canada must be tanking compared to when there was currency parity, but I suppose they'd have to charge in American dollars or else risk Americans buying games from Canadian sources for the discount.

But yeah, it's practically killed my video game habit compared to what it was. I still buy games occasionally but on sales, and I'm even catching up on some last gen titles I missed.

Rather or not a game is worth $60 is completely subjective and depends on the game.. I could pay $60 for Shadow of Mordor's GOTY Edition and be satisfied, but if I paid the same for say WWE 2K18, I would probably feel ripped off..

I rarely pay full price for games, since I think they're rarely worth it. Usually they want you to pay for those expensive actors they used, or the expensive cutscenes that are supposed to fit videogames. **** that. I gladly pay 60 bucks for games like Zelda: BotW and Mario Odyssey that skip all the bullshit and just offers a huge and amazing game. Otherwise I buy indie games, or wait until the game is cheaper.

Yeah, $60 is a fair price to buy a game.

But it's bullshit to say that games today are just $60.

For Example: Breath of the Wild is NOT a $60 game, it's an $80 game. ($60 base + $20 Season Pass)

That is just one example. others would be something like Marvel vs Capcom Infinite. There's $100+ of Extra content for that game. only $20 of it is the Character Season Pass with teases of more characters to come. So when is the real cost of the game going to be when the dlcs stop? It's gonna be pretty big.

So new games aren't just "$60" any more, but they really should be cause there's no reason for them not to.
