A lot of people criticize the 360 being "rushed" to the market in 2005. But what should MS have done differently? How would waiting for 2006 benefited them?

5 years later, the main advantage the PS3 holds hardware wise over the 360 is the Blu-ray drive. And this is not an advantage for gaming. How many of you believe that MS should have waited for 4th quarter 2006 to release the 360 with a blu-ray drive for $600?

I'd like to know what systemwars thinks, please vote in the poll.

If they would have released it a few months later they probably could have eased the RROD problem a little bit. Then again it might have taken a whole year to fix the problem so who knows.

Nah they're beating Sony monthly in the sales department and are constantly getting superior Multiplats. Plus Software is still selling better on the 360 then anything on the ps3.

I think it is pretty obvious they made the right decision as the are ahead of the PS3 and their software is still selling better each month than the PS3 also. Sony is the one that should regret their move with blu-rayas it probably has put them in a solid 3rd place for the rest of the gen behind the 360 and the Wii. Now I will say that I do disagree with you about the blu-ray not having any advantages over DVD for gaming sinec that normally have to compress stuff to put games on the 360 which they don't have to do for PS3 games.

If anything, the PS3 was released too early. It cost them over $800 to produce it at launch, but Sony had no choice but to get it out since Microsoft (and Nintendo) put the pressure on them. Were it not for Microsoft's head-start, I can't help but think Sony would have happily waited until November 2007 to release their system.

In other words, Microsoft of course made the right move, got a healthy install base lead and made their competitor suffer for years.

Overheating, RROD, E74, CPU issues, you name it. Everything about this console is rushed. Keep in mind these are problems that STILL haven't been worked out in 5 years.

The PS3 isn't all that better. Charging 600 bucks for a game console is BS.

Do you really think they don't have to compress textures for example on the PS3 because of blu-ray? What if the PS2 had a Blu-ray drive, would it have better texture quality than the 360?

Blu-ray has ZERO impact on the quality of the graphics because it all must fit into the system RAM. The advantage Blu-ray has is that they can store MORE textures for example and theoretically there can be a 200 hour PS3 game. The problem with that is that first of all the development time would be HUGE, we're talking 10+ years to develop. Second the budget would be ASTRONOMICAL as well say over 200 million. Then when it finally releases it would be competing against next gen games due to the long development time. Finally even if they did do this to take advantage of blu-ray then you could still port this game over to the 360 on a few DVDs.

The only real advantage Blu-ray has is with audio, they can put uncompressed audio if they want and this will fit on the disk. However, you would need an HDMI home theater receiver to take advantage of this. Another smaller advantage is the ability to have a lot of cutscenes in a game. You would have to span multiple DVDs depending on how much video you want to have in a game. So DVD can do this too but on Blu-ray you can keep the game on one disk.

I think that trying to fix a hardware malfunction from it's source is different then trying to fix it on new hardware while still trying to keep it fully compatible with 5 years of previous software

in short: no

I would've liked MS to actually WAIT and not rush things. They cut the originalXBOX's life short just so they can rush a console which will fail on you.

Sony isn't innocent either. The YLOD is a pain.

Bluray's advantages over DVDs was probably never a primary reason to push the format in PS3s, anyway. The primary purpose of fitting the PS3 with a Blu-ray player was to win the format war, get Blu-ray movies into people's homes, and make money off of Blu-ray drive and disc royalties.

Even today nearly half of all Bluray players out there are PS3s... it's hard to say whether Sony made the right of wrong choice here, but if HDDVD had won it would have been an enormous setback for their company.

All the sites reporting this are from the same guy lol. And ONE console does not represent the entire production. So i suppose BR disc errors are common with PS3? My VERY FIRST PS3 had that problem, luckily i had just bought it and just exchanged it for a new one the same day. Yep, PS3's are terrible. :P

Completely agree. They may have rushed a bit which led to some hardware issues that bit them, but to be fair they owned up to it and put out the best warranty (by far) in the market. And that wasn't cheap.

Xbox needed a jump start this gen, and a full year as the only "Next Gen" system was just what the doctor ordered. They increased marketshare, and got the games division making money after an entire gen in the red. They really couldn't have asked for better results.

Numbers are from last year's end of the fiscal year reports from each company. 115.6 million titles sold for PS3 and 103.1 for the 360.

"Seriously, did anyone expect anything else? Its the same console, the same hardware placement, it just has a few more grills and an extra fan or so. Sure, they probably reduced things a notch, but that doesn't mean overheating is a thing of the past."

"As expected. The slim 360 has all the same issues as the old ones… which means it will continue to be the most defective electronic product in history.

But since you xtards defend them, they see no reason to fix this very verybad product.

I bet you guys are dumb enough to defend this as well:

^ Oh yeah, all from the same guy. I can pull some more out because it's an issue that MS ignores. The PS3 slims are overheating as well.

tainted_lynx

in the first second of the video you just posted:

any other argument or are you done prooving you don't read your own sources?

Don't get mad cause the console still has problems. Just look it up

it has problems? well yes, it destroys discs you move it while it is running

but other than that it has had no problems

PS3 sold more software last year despite a smaller install base...

santoron

Link for that? Not that i dont believe you, i just want to see :P

No problem :P Link

Numbers are from last year's end of the fiscal year reports from each company. 115.6 million titles sold for PS3 and 103.1 for the 360.

lol, to be fair, PS3 had way more high profile exclusives that year lol, so it was expected. :P

It scratches a disc even if you touch it. It would gnarl up your disc and ruin it. It's a serious problem.

yes one link in which the actuall article writer said that it wasn't confirmed

and a second link in which the actualy guy who posted the problem said that the console was actually working fine

good show, all you did was prove that the 360 S is actually pretty reliable, so yeah... thank you for helping my argument

Overheating, RROD, E74, CPU issues, you name it. Everything about this console is rushed. Keep in mind these are problems that STILL haven't been worked out in 5 years.

tainted_lynx

all of issues you mentioned have been corrected by the 360 S I believe

^ You were saying..?

"images have been discovered on a forum...." wouldn't exactly call that a reliable source.

considering that even the article you posted wasn't sure if it's true I'd say that my point still stands

Did you even read it?

yes, and its hearsay at best.

I did: "This is 100% real. I know so because this just happened to my xbox last night. I bought the Slim on August 7th. Ive worked for most of the week so i didnt play much but when i did i noticed how hot one area of the console was getting. It was almost too hot to touch so i knew everything wasn't working as intended. Last nite i finally sat down and played RDR for about 2 hours and then it happened."

Did you?

It's not even this link in particular. If you look it up there are tons of articles about overheating issues.

Definitely was a good year for games on the PS3. But it still surprised me to see.

Usually those pics were uploaded from a camera. I'd say it's pretty reliable. Why wouldn't it be?

not really. a forum, or someone's comments or opinions provide absolutely no solid data or evidence of a large scale problem.
