Why in God's name would they EVER do that? The Wii is the best selling console this gen by far, and Nintendo is multi-billion dollar empire.

Yesterday, November 19, 2006, a date which will live in infamy, the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by console and handheld forces of the Empire of Nintendo.

I suppose empire isn't quite the right word, but I was trying to show that Nintendo is a pretty damn big company.

Let me think about it, should the most profitable gaming company this gen abandon console development?

Yeah, totally.

It does get quality titles. Niche titles, but quality nonetheless.

Just because they aren't hyped to high heaven like MW2 doesn't make them bad games.

flashn00b

Ewww. Modern Warfail 2 was crap compared to CoD4 and WaW.

Also, i can point out a few mistakes about the Wii:

-Nintendo's first mistake with the Wii was to discontinue gamecube controller manufacturing.
-Graphics aren't even the equivelant of an X1400
-Motion control concept was released too early

wait what my gamecube games work fine on the wii and alot of wii games is gamecube controller compatible

Not in the Videogame industry Nintendo made a profit from day one on every single system they made. The only thing they didn't profit from is the Virtual Boy.

The gaming industry dies when Nintendo stops making consoles and games 1st party. FACT!!Dibdibdobdobo

Just like when SEGA stopped manufacturing consoles? Consoles are becoming a thing of the past... most core gamers these days want more PC-like features. Nintendo could easily become a third-party developer and stop manufacturing consoles and the industry would barely notice their absence. Granted, a lot of die-hard Nintendo fans would notice, but the industry as a whole probably wouldn't. And to say gaming would "die" as a result? Lol, Nintendo has barely done anything to advance the gaming industry over the past two generations (current gen inclusive). All the really forward-thinking ideas are coming from third-parties and indie developers... where they always usually came from.

Nintendo creates the tools that everyone else takes advantage of. Nintendo has barely tapped into the potential of the motion controls this gen yet, and has tacked it on in most games and even reverted back to traditional control styIes in many games (SSBB, Other M, etc.).

Imagine third parties competing with Nintendo on every console now. A lot of developers would go bankrupt.

If I knew how to post pics I'd post the double facepalm one. On topic: No TC. Nintendo is making much more money off the Wii console(hardware) than MS or Sony. So yeah, no need to abandon it.Shottayouth13-

Let me help you with that

On Topic:

I disagree with TC. The only reason why people say Nintendo should leave is because they somehow "abandoned" the "hardcore" and don't have the graphical power of the HD "Twins".

If you want you can read an epic post I made hereat GameSpot

Not at all. I think the Wii is doing quite well (Galaxy, Brawl, Zack and Wiki, No More Heroes 1 and 2, Little King Story, Fatal Frame 4, Metroid Prime 3, Twilight Princess, Tatsunoku vs. Capcom, Dead Space: Extraction, Punchout!!, Warioware: Smooth Moves and more) and don't get me started on the DS, just too much awesomeness. However, the main thing here is that the Wii is the best-selling console of this generation and Nintendo has absolutely no reason to stop now.

Gordon would be funny in SSB, though :P

1. Show me how consoles are a thing of the past? over 120 million this gen alone (not including handhelds) disagree.

2. The industry would not notice that Nintendo is no longer developing a console?

3. "Nintendo has barely done anything." No, they just revolutionized how games are played by introducing motion controls and tapping into a market not tapped before.

4. Nintendo has barely done anything? N64 introduced the joystick and rumble pad, Wii introduced motion controls.

5. All the real forward thinking ideas are coming from third party developers? Maybe for things as new gameplay elements and a better use of console online gaming. But Nintendo has had a ton, not to mention *cough* WII SPORTS? *cough*.

6. Tell me exactly what third party devs have done to push the console industry aside from making games with new concepts. Hardware is what really advances the console. Either by pushing graphics or through controller enhancements. So unless you're talking about Madcatz...

7. Motion controls are still, STILL a relatively new concept. Yes, in many games they do get tacked on. Oh, and Metroid Other M uses the controller by flipping it during gameplay to go into first person, can you do that with a standard controller? That seems like an intuitive use of MOTION controls.

What I think?? I think Nintendo is doing pretty well and they don't really give a **** about what you or any of us think as long as they have their pockets full of big bucks.

GreenGoblin2099

well I think they are doing well like any business would like and by not listening to hard core fanboys.

Hardcore fanboys don't seem content enough with their highend gaming PC's, PS3s, and Xbox360's that they want Nintendo to make games to vcater to them?

Nintendo has not really changed for the close the 30 years they have been around making game consoles, family friendly games and their well known and established franschises-Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Pokemon-

Good on them I say. Let a new generation of gamers get a chance to play games that suits them.

Mainstream like their games and they talk with their pockets, while fanboys just talk.

Nintendo:

-best 1st party games

-best sales

.....nope, they seem to be doing ok to me

i find it funny that because a few people don't like what is on ONE of nintendo's systems, they think they should/will stop making more systems, regardless of how much of a success it is

absolutely not, they're the most profitable company out there and abandoning console development would be a stab in the back for fans, consumers and investors.

Wikipedian

the only people who would enefit or be happy about it would be some hardcore fanboys but luckily for a majority of us Nintendo doesn't listen to them.

Nintendo havn't really changed it's the target audience that grows older and matures (supposedly!) and has different tastes in gaming.

I my self when I was 10 years old I loved Super Mario World, Zelda and a lot of their "casual" games, however I got older, enjoyed and appreciated mature contenet like adult themes, crime, human nature.

So I am content to spend lot so f money of Highend PCs and game consoles that cater to my tastes. i.e. the Xbox360 and the PS3.

You don't see me go all mental wishing Nintendo would make "hardcore" games because I'm not satisifed with what is on offer on the PCs and two other consoles.

That's a thing about this silly fanboy menataility is that alot of it is driven by emotion and fear/hate/insecurity(buyers remorse) that it doesn't make sense or is illogical.

However since this is System Wars I will stir the pot(for laughs)and claim that Sony should abandon console develeopment and the PSP/PSP Go, and let Apple be the real challenge to Microsoft.

[QUOTE="LordQuorthon"]

Oh my...

DazedDarkness

Ah yes, always the doom and gloom for Nintendo. Nintendo is doing great, Nintendo development? Don't make me laugh, Nintendo is probably still the best developer of the big three when it comes to first party games. Nintendo has no reason to drop out of this race, never has, and probably never will, seeing as they are always making money, even on the less successful Gamecube and N64, Nintendo was nowhere close. OP has to be a kid to not even know business, will Nintendo just drop a billion dollar company, and walk away, because fanboys don't like them? Come on kid, get out of high school, and learn just about a little reality in business, no company just drops operation when they're making Nintendo money.

another thing I need to reitterate is that Nintendo have been in this games business for around 30 years and continues to make very fun family orientated games -which Hardore would call "casual" crap but they don't know what they are talking about.

As long as their are children(proper children not fanboys), people new to games and prefer simple fun then graphics kings, exclusives then Nintendo will be there for them -which is beyond the comprehension of "hardcore" fanboys.

" I don't get it. I don't get it!?!?!"

Why do "casual" crap like Wii Sports, just Dance andmilked franchises like Mario, Pokemonand family friendly fun orientated games /easy accessible motion controls keep selling Wii's in the millions??????

Microsoft flight simulator can be considered a very technical and qualitive game. Deep and with long lasting appeal- However I doubt many here on System Wars would't find it fun or that many rave on about it. However it's still a great game.

who does it appeal to? wellthose who are plane enthusiasts, wanting to be pilots or are pilots or those who are technically minded and appreaciate the sophistication involved. They could look down on games like Tom Clancy's Hawks as "casual" junk.

Pokemon well I don't know much about Pokemon, but if I were 10 years old I would be all over it because I recognise the appeal, with collecting, battles, colorful cute characters and school ground comraderie that may ensue.

Is the pile of Wii shovelware really worth preserving Nintendo's console development?

Don't get me wrong, there were a handful of games I enjoyed, such as Brawl, Mario Kart Wii, MadWorld, and Mario Galaxy, and Super Paper Mario, but those are just it. For the most part, my Wii just collects dust while i play games on the PC.

almost 60 million units sold and you think they should abandon it? hahahaahahah

no TC...just no

and there ARE amazing titles...you just have to look for em....i've got 24 titles and only 3 are shovelware, the rest are amazing games and i still don't have all the amazing titles out there yet for the wii

usually the best titles on the wii don't get much advertising or publicity at all....you really have to do research, but if you do, you don't be disappointed

I know that it doesn't revolve around me. I'm just surprised that despite the fact that most of SW discussions are PS3 vs 360, i'm surprised that are enough people defending the Wii.

1. Updates, patches, DLC, firmware, hard disk drives, flash memory, internet browsers, online, etc. etc. A "gaming console" is something that issupposed to be entirely different from the PC platform. The "console" died with the N64.

2. It is speculation on both our parts, but your insistance that "gaming would die" is a far larger stretch.

3. They haven't revolutionized anything. Motion controls are still entirely un-realized. Its like the analogue stick on the Atari. It means nothing right now.

4. I was talking about the Wii in the current generation, if you had noticed, I praised Nintendo's previous efforts from the NES/SNES/N64 days, when they cared about delivering a quality gaming experience along with forward-thinking new technology.

5. WiiSports isn't a game, it is a mini-game compilation. And replacing button presses with waggle isn't innovative. What developers like Suda 51 have done is innovative.

6. If hardware is so important, then why did Nintendo use an overclocked Gamecube? Coming up with a new piece of technology is not innovative or revolutionary... it is using that technology creatively. And barely anyone has really done anything creative with it yet, aside from a handful of third-parties on the Wii.

7. That flipping in Other M looks incredibly sloppy. Why they couldn't just use the normal combo and have a button press to switch between perspectives is beyond me. It makes NO sense from a design perspective. It just makes it harder to do it accurately and reliably. Are they trying to increase the difficulty of the game artificially? Nintendo has really been very non-involved when it comes to motion controls this gen. Even in their big titles, the games themselves still could easily have been done with a traditional controller (in all regards), and nothing they contain really justifies the implementation of motion controls.

Let's also not forget that SSBB, one of Nintendo's biggest games this gen, was designed solely around the Gamecube controller. If motion controls are so revolutionary, couldn't they have thought of a new way to play the game without using the Gamecube controller? Surely they could have made more design changes to make it work better with the "new" motion controls that are so fantastic?
