Do you think PC should be a more commercially promoted platform?

I have always wondered why companies haven't invested money for marketing the gaming division of PCs. The last time I saw a commercial for a gaming PC was about a year ago for the AlienWare MX11 but nearly everyday you would see that Dell Lollipop commercial for the Inspirion PCs.

It doesn't have to be promotions like "Buy crappy food from Taco Bell in a chance to win a Project Fiona!!". But buy a GTX 550ti and get -insert triple A game- for free.

I don't see why Nvidia, AMD, Intel, and other PC manufacturers haven't invested a little into a little bit commercial marketing for their gaming divisions. I remember several times seeing things such as DarkSiders for free with AMD Phenom II X6 CPUs, RAGE for free with Intel SandyBridge CPUs, buy a Logitech mouse and get Serious Sam 3 BFE free, buy an AlienWare PC and get a $100 promo gift card, etc etc etc.

Honestly why hasn't the "PC Gaming Alliance" done this it would be a win win for all of them. Intel could send in a little money to AlienWare, CyberPowerPC, Ibuypower, Asus, and other companies with gaming division PCs using Intel based PCs to start marketing them a little more heavily. Nvidia and AMD/ATI could do the same. Since more PCs are prone to be Nvidia n Intel paired and AMD n AMD (forever alone) paired the two companies could split the cost in money they chip in to PC manufacturers to mass market gaming PCs using their hardware.

They also need to get more Gaming PCs in retail stores that are set up for use that browsing customers can try out.

They dont think it's all that worth it and the idea you have seems a little convoluted. PC gaming is so entrenched in such an open, online and self-sufficient system in that it wont really expand or benefit from such commercial promoting.. Really, are GPU/CPU sales slowing down? These manufacturers sell hardware, not games and they are seemingly selling alot of units on every frequent generation cycle. However, if there is anyone that should be doing promoting, it's the services, not the hardware.

I dunno. The Nvidia and AMD's cards only sell because of the games. It wouldn't hurt to try to put word out to consolites that are obsessed with graphics that PCs are really where it's at for gaming, and TC's right about the PC Gaming Alliance. IMO, that organization's a joke. I mean, what have they really done for PC gaming, and why does Microsoft even bother with being a part of it to start with? They've helped destroy it with their red eye of death 360 to start with. No, I'm not saying PC gaming is dead. It's just changed because of consoles.

Its doing fine as it is.

Why bother wasting money for what could be little to no return.

A partial problem is the image PC gamers have built themselves and its hard to change an image :P

Technically it is, I mean, everyone has a computer of SOME kind, and Farmville kind of counts as PC gaming, right?

And some hardcore games do sell amazingly, such as Skyrim or Battlefield 3.

This is correct. The last game commercial I've seen was the new MMA game on the sports network TV or TOR on Adult Swim. I've worked for a promotions and fulfillment company and I will tell you that advertising works best when targeting the core audience.

Not sure I would want it to be mass marketed. I like when things that are actually quality get passed around by word of mouth. Games of note like Minecraft that have no marketing but were just so good that WoM is what fueled its success. Same with products like CPUs, GPUs, mice, keyboards, and etc... as well as with certain types of software like Fraps, DXtory, Bandicam, etc...

Nobody owns PC gaming.

So who is going to promote it.

How do you promote an open way of life.

Nvidia promotes Nvidia.

Windows promotes Windows.

Intel promotes Intel.

That's the long and short of it.

Uhm my post says is that, Nvidia, AMD, and Intel should work with Gaming PC manufacturers to promote Gaming PCs that use their Hardware. That way its a win-win for the manufacturer and the hardware supplier.

Wont happen, too much infighting would happen.AMD wont advertise along with AMD and likewise with Intel and AMD.Biggest problem that arises is the companies will all want their own way.

The biggest problem is the rivalry what you might be potentially asking is the likes of Ninty and Sony advertising together to promote console gaming it just wont happen.PC gaming is doing fine as it is and just as sucessful as it ever will be i dont see why you insist on trying to say things like this would be good and bring more people in, it wont theres a perception of PC gaming in a generalised sense and its stuck like the metalhead stereotype.

Well they could just specifically pick out PC lineups from manufacturers that exclusively use their hardware to promote. ibuypower and cyberpowerpc are customizable PC manufacturers so they could simply just reply to AMD and Intels demand to make seperate PC line ups.

I'd say it depends on what they're trying to sell and how they market it, I could see products like the AlienWare X51, Razer SwitchBlade, Project Fiona, CyberPower/Ibuypower/etc PCs ranging from $500-$1200 having decent return rates but not stuff like "For $3000 you might be able to afford just our keyboard!!"

then does that not essentially become slightly ironic when you tout choice so much? think bout it long and hard one of the biggest pro's of the PC market is the choice and the freedom moves like this might possibly even take away from that and potentially cause an uneeded arms race.

No thanks. You want hardcore PC gaming to turn in a platform in where devs try to cater to all audiences, core and causal, like on consoles?

That is what happens when you the drop the barriers of entry. I say no thanks. A separated community is a perk to PC gaming. Much better than being lump together like on consoles.

But how does this become ironic when Intel and AMD already do this type of marketing for prebuilt PCs already. When Dell/AlienWare, Lenovo, Toshiba and others advertise their PCs they usually have mention it using Intel/AMD hardware or have their logos show up at the end.

Yes, I do. Even multi-plats on my country (Portugal) aren't shown on the TV for the PC, only 360 and PS3.

However, they have been showing the first PC exclusive ad I've ever seen, about World of Warcraft adopting the Portuguese language into the game.

"Decent" isn't nearly good enough. For every $1 spent on marketing, how much will they get back by spending it marketing gaming PCs vs. marketing hardware in the other categories I described? If it's not substantially more, then why do it? People accuse console gamers of being oblivious to the nature of the companies they champion, but the truth is that none of these companies are charities, and if they're not going to see significant returns, then they're not going to do something because it sounds like a cool thing for them to do.

Why do Intel, Nvidia and AMD bother making higher end hardware such as the HD 6990 or Core i7 3960x then if weaker hardware sells substantially more?

What is your idea of decent? My idea of decent is at least 20%-30%+ of what they invested will be their return rate.

We never know what the sales could of been unless PC companies put a lil more risk into their market which is whar Razer accusses the PC giants of. The stuff I listed above seem perfect for marketing to mass consumers.

However, if there is anyone that should be doing promoting, it's the services, not the hardware.illmatic87

GP/CPU ales going down from what Nvidia, AMD and intel have been talking about the sales of their hardware have increased.

Nope. PC gaming is heavily fragmented; and that's a reason that it's as cosmopolitan and rich as it is.

[QUOTE="fernandmondego_"]Who is going to promote it? No one owns it, there is no way someone is going to promote PC so that you can go out and buy it from someone else.NoodleFighter

No one owna "PC" but they do own PC products. Why would it not make sense to promote your own products?

That's what they are doing!! Nvidia and ATI promotes their own products, same as other companies. I for one would not want a monopolized platform. You will never see an indie game if this happens.

Huh? how can they do that are they gonna make their own OSes or something. Are AMD and Nvidia going to magically stop selling their hardware to manufacturers their main source of income and make it exclusive so they can create some sort of PC console? There are several manufacturers on PC so I don't see the monopolizing thing happening

Then why would one promote a open platform unless they get fair share out of it?

Cause they're not just promoting the platform but their products on it. Is an AlienWare commercial going to some how make its viewers go out and buy a cyberpowerPC instead?
