Poll Do you think Sea of Thieves will flop? (101 votes)

Critics will love it, but it won't sell well 9%
It will well lots of copies, but get mediocre reviews 16%
It will be middle of the road, and people will forget about it quickly 41%
It will be a complete success 16%
It will be a complete failure 19%

I'm thinking this game will be middle of the road. It'll have a fanbase, but it won't be a blockbuster game by any means. I think there is limited appeal considering the type of game that it is. What do you think, SW? Will Sea of Thieves flop?

It won't fail in terms of reviews it will hit 7-8/10... But it will fail in sales, I have played it during the Alpha and Beta and I don't like it and many others who haven't been paid for that play games on YouTube seem to agree that its a average game that requires a good team to play with AND other good teams to play against otherwise its just boredom incarnated which is the reason why people will forget about it, not everyone has 2-3 friends to play with on a regular basis and even if you like I mentioned its a fun session isn't solely dependent on just you and your team. Also there is no real character progression which is fine for games like PUBG since its a survival game but this game really needs it and the missions are mostly fetch quests.

The only good thing about the game is the ship combat everything else is mediocre at best.

6/10 experience from me. I will be forgotten in a month or two after release its not going to be next big thing like PUBG, Minecraft and so on.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: I assume you played the PC version alpha right? If so, how did SoT PC version handle well?

@davillain-: It handles well on my PC but then again I do have a 1080 Ti overclocked on water, that being said in the Beta the performance would drop by 5-10FPS at night, I think it has something to do with the lighting on the islands.

4K/60FPS on a 1080 Ti is doable.

Yep, hit the nail on the head.

You can imagine the usual cow suspects (some already showing their ugly heads in this thread), if it doesn't score well. They'd enjoy that more than any Sony exclusive they supposedly play.

I've noticed this as well. Some hardcore fanboys here just want Microsoft to fail and drop out of the console race...lol. I'm looking forward to Sea of Thieves, my friends and I are looking forward to playing it on PC; my only gripe is managing the Windows Store. I hear so many bad things about it. I almost wanted to check out Gears of War 4, they had a trial on the store but the reviews were so bad for the PC version.

Really hope that the Windows Store gets a full blown update or something.

I guess competition is a bad thing and a monopoly is a good thing? Those are great EA tactics.

People don't want Microsoft to fail. They are rooting for them more than they're rooting for Nintendo. People actually wanted Nintendo to drop out and put games on their system of choice, even Xbox fans were wishing for it; which is dumb since Nintendo would most likely port their games to mobile/pc and MAYBE PlayStation, before they port it to Xbox. Though it's different with Microsoft. They don't want them to drop out and port games on their system of choice. They're saying, "Microsoft, you better bring your A game to force the other console makers to do better, or just leave."

@Solaryellow: How so? No way it sells like Destiny did, but it might have a devoted fanbase like Destiny did.

It looks like a pretty good game to me, the water looks absolutely amazing, plus I really like Rare so I’m hoping that it does well both critically and commercially.

People will quickly grow tired of it much like a portion of Destiny's base. As much as I enjoy Destiny you run out of goals and if you don't have a clan or the clan isn't active, you miss out on raids. For as long as Thieves has been teased and anticipated, I have yet to hear much on the content and if there are some sort of dungeons/instances/strikes or any end game facilitation. Even so, I don't foresee the experiment being long lasting and relatively intense to the point of a massive and continued following. Maybe it will work out though.

It's your typical survival multiplayer game. It'll be a hit with some folks for a bit, and eventually fall off the mainstream scale. Then, it'll have a small core population that plays it every day, with spurts of people joining temporarily when it goes on sale.

These types of games with no story or actual goals don't hold up for all that long.

I don't like the options...

I think it will get an 8. Cows will cry "flop". Lemmings will cheer that it's awesome, but GS hates the Xbox.

Then, the world will keep rotating.

Scores don't decide whether or not a game like this flops. Sales and player retention do. If this game is dead in a month or 2 expect Rare to be closed down.

I hope it's a success. It bruises the industry when a Game fails. I find it childish, people hope for failure for a hobby each of us care deeply about. I never hope for a game/console to fail. Some people need to change their outlook on somethings.

That's not how things work.

Games that people want to play don't fail. If a game fails its not because people wanted it to fail its because no one bought it which is the responsibility of the developer to make a game that people want to buy its not our responsibility to buy a game we don't want to play.

The industry is being destroyed by developers being run by co-operations who just want profit and won't take risks to create new games because they are scared to fail. You think Sea of Thieves is fresh and exciting?... Its a surivival mulitplayer game, its about as safe as you can play it.

What you are preaching is exactly the reason we keep seeing the same games over and over again, real gamer's want them to fail so they force other developers to think of something different and interesting just look at Metal Gear Survival before you preach that BS again, you are killing the industry not bruising it.

From what I have heard from both sides of the fence.

Sea of Thieves is great fun but quickly becomes stale and unless you have a good team/friends to play with, you won't enjoy it.

So my bet is that its middle of the road and will sell ok but quickly die down once people start to get past the initial hype over a new game.

Well, the animation on the characters is like something out of a PS2 game, so really, really poor.

Overall looks and physics are last gen too, going to PS2 level on some areas.

I cannot see why anyone would get hyped about this. It'll prolly get 6 as a metacritic score. Paid reviewers will of course give it 8 because, well, theyre paid pipers.

The game will not sell that much, although, if you only have Xbone, I guess you have to get it as you got nothing better to play.

I hope it doesn't flop because from what I can tell ( game footage compilation) it does seem to offer a simply unique multiplayer experience that wanders off from the typical formula. The water physics are absolutely amazing and lastly, for the sake of Rare I hope it will be a hit. I don't think most of the commonwealth will "get it" though. Probably abysmal sales. Also Microsoft hasn't exactly been on fire lately.

It's not a unique gameplay experience for the PC space. We've had dozens of survival MP games like this such as Rust, Ark, The Forest, 7 Days to Die, DayZ, and single player games such as Subnautica and The Long Dark. Although, Subnautica may already have plans to add MP.

I would say it's unique for the Xbox space, simply because the system has no games compared to the PC.

Abso-fucking-lutely. MS upcoming lineup sucks and have no SP games, what little SP IPs they did fund they abandon it when it didn't do well despite the potential. Sony really nails it by giving IPs another change even if they fail at first.

Well - I agree with that. Buuuut... if it scores an 8, I can guarantee 99% of the cows will be making forum comments of "LOLZ flop!"

Agreed. It will sell to the people onto this type of game. An online open ended world to enjoy with friends and meet others in. Its very fun imo.

Its different than what many here like. Many of the arguments here seem to be from people that don't root for games. Why would anyone want a different game to fail? If Sea of Thieves sells well and is received well it won't make ND cancel TLOU2 you know? Its so anti gamer to be rooting against games, any games.

I don't find anything interesting about the game and there's no SP and that could hurt the game big time. I wouldn't buy it even it if it was half price just doesn't appeal to me.

I believe the majority of people do see the potential in Sea of Thieves for a great pirate game. It currently has the most beautiful water in any game to date, the network code seems solid, the ship mechanics seem solid, and the world (map) is plenty big for a starting point. However, I agree with what I believe to be most in that there need to be a lot of things added, or expanded and adjusted:

Higher quality and more realistic graphics (besides the water, obviously):

The caricaturish cartoon style is fine, but it needs to be tightened up to be somewhat more realistic -- thinking how Disney portrayed the pirates in the original Peter Pan animated film. Objects and weapons for some reason 'feel' like they have a low poly count, but it's really just the overly cartoony style, which needs to be reigned in somewhat to make objects have more realistic details on them (thinking the compass, sword, spyglass, etc.), as well as have characters be more realistic in appearance, while still allowing for caricature forms if desired.

Better / refined mechanics:

The movement feels clunky, like the most primitive form of movement you might see in an Unreal or Unity tutorial on creating a controllable player object. The movement needs a lot of nuances added - coming to a halt, tripping/tumbling/sliding when going down steep rocks or embankments, head bob, etc. Look at Planetside 2 for an example of what this game needs, a game that I feel has some of the best and most nuanced movement in any FPS.

A proper character creator:

A big complaint is that you cannot create the character you want to be -- you have to hit a randomizer and hope for someone who approximates what you want to play as. There are plenty of MMO games that offer better character building options, even under the limitations of a MMO type of game where you need to be able to load every unique character model into memory. If we could have an editor as intuitive and detailed as Bloodborne, that would be truly great, but even having just a wider variety of premade character templates (both attractive and less so) would be fantastic, as well as the ability to save certain profiles for later reference (also a la Bloodborne).

More detailed sword combat:

Sword combat should be an important and satisfying element in an open world pirate game, but it is very bland and shallow right now. It needs refinement -- the charging attack is too clunky and unreliable. More variety in the animations, more visceral detail when the swords clash or a would is caused, something at least as involving as the original Thief on PC had.

More detailed combat period:

Bullets from the pistol and sniper need more detailed physics modeling, you should be able to see your sniper shot sail out and start dropping slightly, with a visceral feedback on hitting something - a sharp crack and see it bounce off, as it hits the side of a ship or other solid object - a satisfying 'thunk' or similar with a small blood bloom or similar if it hits a soft target. (again thinking Planetside 2 weapon physics, handling, and feedback).

More weapons and items:

Slingshots
Knives (thrown or wielded)
Short Swords
Long Swords
Axes
Birds of prey, or parrots, that you can launch from your shoulder to circle above and randomly attack enemies for a time before they return to you.
Bombs

Different varieties of pistols, rifles, and all of the above, all with different ranges, loading speeds, accuracy, reliability (mis-fire rate), rarity, and cost. Not to mention some variance in both model and appearance (texture). And none of this tied to any micro transaction BS, maybe not even purchasable at a store (or at least then very expensive), but maybe randomly found in crates, sunken ships, and other places as you explore the islands. Also, perhaps special weapons, items, clothes dropped off certain 'notorious' mobs that you can find randomly (thinking FFXI).

[need to go to sleep]

In short, there are lots of ways to expand and refine this game and make it much more compelling to explore and fight. I haven't even touched on how they might change the quest systems and handling of PvP combat, or on adding more NPC enemy varieties, including autonomous NPC pirates and ships. It's a lot to add to the game at this stage, so I doubt we'll see much of the above, even if RARE does take any of these directions, within the next year or two, by which point, I'm guessing that many if not most who bought into the game will no longer be playing. It's kind of sad.

It's been a success to a certain degree but in 6 months I see nobody playing it unless they release some serious amount of content.
