I think the PS5 could very well be what the PS2 was to PS1 especially if it has backwards compatibility, which I think it will. If that happens, I think PS5 will easily win next gen as long as Sony keeps doing what it’s doing. What about you, SW? Does anything really stand in the way of PS5’s success next gen?

Sony will probably win, but Nintendo will make a strong case. Microsoft is a none factor after Phil's CNBC interview.

lol don't you think there's a difference between wanting to play games you didn't play last gen versus wanting to play games that were released multiple gens ago?

@SolidGame_basic: So games on 360 weren't from the previous gen? That's a part of the BC that Ryan of Sony made fun of. Besides, what's wrong with older than one gen? The PS3 with BC played ps1 games. Gaming will never be considered an art form with the mentality that they have an expiration date.

Yes. Once PS5 and XB2 drop Switch will remain stuck in this gen and behind tech from this gen at that. I also believe this gen may have damaged Xbox's reputation to the point that they'll stay behind unless next console is cheaper and has a ridiculously good group of launch titles.

Idk. I can't say much for the games but I do like what Ms offers Game pass trashes ps bow effortlessly. Xbox also has the nicer UI. If Ms were to get passionate about game creation they could become equal or surpass the aging sony

Sony has been getting more and more anti-consumer ever since they took back the lead and their old arrogance is starting to come back, so I think that they will probably make some screw-ups going into next gen that might give Microsoft and Nintendo a chance. I'm also starting to notice a backlash against Sony's obsession with movie games slowly starting to grow among gamers and I feel that by the time the PS5 gets released, a lot of gamers will be sick and tired of movie games which will hurt Sony.

it's looking like they will. They certainly have the momentum. All they need to do is keep doing what they are doing now next gen and they'll win easily.

MS should be very worried, I think they picked the worst gen to screw up in. This gen is very different from last gen in the sense that now people are building digital libraries and Sony has a sizable lead in that department right now compared to MS. They have a ton of people invested in the PS4 ecosystem and those people will be highly reluctant to leave their games behind and jump into the MS ecosystem next gen. Nintendo doesn't have that problem since people are fine buying Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games but MS relies a lot on multiplatform games that are also available on PS4. I think that's why we are seeing MS positioning Xbox to be a service next gen. They seem to realize that there's not enough room for them to compete with Sony and Nintendo in the console space next gen, and that's why we are seeing them push services with Xbox right now so that they can gradually transition into being a service model next gen.

Put it this way, Sony isn't going to have it as easy "next gen" as it did this gen... MS isn't going to make the same mistakes again & Nintendo has come back strong too. And I'm noticing a bit of the old Sony cockiness that we saw at the end of the PS2 gen too. It's going to be a much closer race.

And as I've said before, when it comes to Xbox VS PS, the only real advantage that PS has over Xbox now is the 1st/2nd party output, which MS is currently investing in to rectify. In pretty much every other area, Xbox is arguably the better platform. So if anyone should be worried about next gen, it's Sony. Because both MS & Nintendo are coming for them.

If you really want my honest opinion on this.

I think Sony learned not to never make the mistake when they launch PS3 all those years ago and looking at there success with PS4, I think Sony has come a long way to play it right with right pricing on the console, more exclusive games does sell the console as we seen it with PS4 is the real reason why it's winning this gen. The way this is going for Sony this gen, how could they even lose?

Might be hard to catch up with Switch, and might be hard to gain a phenomenal lead they got this gen which they owed in large part to how Microsoft flubbed things in the beginning. They might still do better than MS but they difference might not be as great this time around. MS seems to investing considerable money into their gaming service now so curious if they'll make the right choices. Last gen the market seemed pretty evenly split between the three devices, I wouldn't be surprised if next gen looked similar with everyone fighting about who has a greater marginal lead.

Probably. I’m interested to see what Nintendo does too. Thanks to the success of the switch, they’re finally at a point where they may be able to lure back some of the 3rd party support they have lost over the years.

If the big N releases a standard console with similar architectue to the ps5 and xbox whatever, they have a real shot. Nintendo exclusives are still the best in the business imo.

We all thought the ps3 would dominate after the huge success of the ps2, but it was a big let down. You never know. Depends on a variety of factors.

@appariti0n: Yeah if they do but they havn't since the GC, If they did I might even jump ship but the only issue is there terrible store they need to fix it so I can change primary consoles like ps4 and xbox, I don't want to have to repurchase my digital games again.

If Xbox keep updating there consoles and do an iPhone style development, it would be pretty great I've only got PS4 because it was cheap after the pro came out. They would win. PS5 needs to be exactly that not an entirely new gen but better hardware if you want it. That's how I think it should be done.

Depends on when Nintendo releases their next console.

Sony has the casual market on lockdown with all their movie games.

PS5 will easily win next gen.

Microsoft is going to give up on consoles. They lost 3 gens in a row. Never made a profit off the Xbox brand and hide the failure/money loser by combining it with other slightly more successful entertainment ventures.

It is only a matter of time before investors and head honchos say “screw it” and pull the plug. They don’t like losing even a cent. Best to cut the losses and end this experiment.

They have gone half hearted every gen. They closed down a bunch of studios last gen and have no games. They want to turn Xbox into a TV and streaming service.

Nintendo is Nintendo. They will eventually go 3rd party. Just a matter of time.

Sony not only won this gen without free BC they bought that streaming company. My bet is PS NOW version 2 on PS5.

Sony's motto this gen is "This is for the payers" for good reason.

That don't mean much, Sony have their fingers deep into the streaming pie, they're not going to just throw that revenue away to keep gamers happy, much like how the cows shit all over MS BC, and make excuses for Sony's lack of BC.

@i_p_daily: Will see but its doubtful. Leaked patents look like they are going for native backward compatability and PS NOW isnt bringing in the revenue that the PS4 is. It would be suicide for Sony to abandon an 80 million plus ecosystem.

Well PS Now must make them some money otherwise they would have abandoned it already. Like always time will tell.

People said the same thing about them after the incredible success of the PS2 and before the launch of the PS3. The PS2 completely dominated all of the competition in the previous generation and sold nearly triple the amount of all of the other consoles combined, so how could Sony possibly lose after that amount of dominance? Well, they found a way to go from complete dominance all the way to last place by getting arrogant, lazy, and anti-consumer going into the launch of the PS3.

The same thing is starting to happen again. The longer Sony stays on top, the more arrogant, lazy, and anti-consumer they become. In all fairness, this eventually happens with all companies when they are too dominant in a market for too long, so I'm not just trashing Sony here, but it's going to eventually lead to Sony's downfall again. Sony can indeed lose, it's happened before and it will eventually happen again, and the arrogance of believing that they can't lose is exactly what will cause them to lose.

Agreed. I missed out on some games last gen due to being in the Army and not having the time to play all I wanted.

To each their own. I'll still buy the PS5. They always get me 4-7 games I really enjoy each gen.

I wouldn't say it got boring for System Wars, there was just nothing to talk about. Hell even before X1X release, this place got interesting until it release and then it got nowhere interesting to discuss.

Nah. By the time PS5 is out the PS4 will be at over 100 million. No way Sony is abandoning a platform with over 100 million userbase. They'll use the PS4's success as a way to drive PS5 sales by using BC. It makes sense to do this as you'll sell far more PS5s if you tell people that their digital libraries will move forward to their new console than to tell them to start from scratch. The reason they didn't do it with the PS4 is because the PS3 was a flop for them, the CELL architecture was a bitch, and a lot less people had digital libraries last gen. They can still sell remasters separately and make their money even if there's BC.

They lost because of "$599"

As long as they stay in the $399 sweet spot they'll be dominant again next gen.

BC won't happen. Not now that they know they can sell digital version people buy it ... why would they offert BC ... it will cut in their revenue.

I think that Microsoft will stop making consol and focus on Xbox platform on PC.

Nintendo will continue to do the N stuff and Sony will continue to do the S stuff.

@Random_Matt: Or maybe i dont want 5 playstations under my tv to play everything? Its called building an ecosystem. And any future console without backwards compatability is fucked.

Sony is not big on BC. On PS4, they made masses of money making 'remasters' of the best PS3 games for PS4.

They could've easily given us BC with PS3 games, but no, they wanted to make easy money on remasters.

I think the same will happen with PS5. Instead of BC we will get remasters of all the best PS4 games.

I'm ok with that, as I've no intention of throwing away me PS4.

@quadknight: both PS4 and Xbox One opted against BC, both had a user base around 80 million and both had digital libraries. Luckily MS made a 180 on this and have a solid BC offering.

I’d hope Sony isn’t that dumb but the stupid decisions companies make always amazes me.
