Poll Do you think the Switch will die out once PS5/XboxNext come out? (94 votes)

Yes 13%

Maybe 13%

I must admit, as a proud Switch owner its an amazing console hybrid. The best Nintendo has launched since the cube. However, I still play more pc and ps4. I believe Nintendo will need to launch a new console as next gen when the PS5 comes out momentum will start to wain out. I don't have any hopes for the XboxFlopNext - so w/e that.

No. I don't see the Switch dying anytime soon. Rather I expect some sort of revision either this year or the next that is more powerful but not by an awful lot.

I don't think so. Nintendo fans usually march to a different tune from the Sony, MS, and PC fans.

PC should be grouped separately as well. But, there is more overlap with the other two consoles.

I think it will and really do hope the Switch sticks around. I don't own one (I'm a PS4/XBox girl), but I'm a firm believer that competition is great for the consumer.

Yep. By the time next gen came switch is 4-5 years old. nintendo is always front loaded in console sales, peaking in 3rd year and a massive drop after that. Happened to almost every nintendo console except the ds.

true nintendo usually release a new system every 5 years. so in 2022 a new nintendo system will launch. ps5/xbox launch in 2020.

in the meantime in 2019/2020 nintendo could release a revision to buy them 2 more years for the next system.

nintendo is in no trouble.

Wow we agreed on something.

Anyhow I'm basing this from records. Wii sold 20+m in its first 3 years, everyone expecting it to outsold ps2 but then sales dropped off a cliff in 2010-2011. Probably due to amount of shovelware and casuals no longer interest in wii. Hope Switch has better longevity as even though I generally hate nintendo franchises, I do enjoy zelda.

no, the wii stopped selling because nintendo stopped making software for it.there was also no 3rd party to keep it alive like playstation and xbox. in 2011/2012 no notable nintendo games came out for it. They shifted focus to wiiU. the wiiu launch was not bad but it dried up quick.

Nice so this means RIP switch 2020. Hello new console 2022

Why would it? It's not competing with home consoles, it's a Handheld competing with smart phones. lol :P

I doubt it will die out completely, but unless they want to continue having decent 3rd party support, I'd recommend they at least find a way to upgrade its hardware to match the minimal requirements 3rd party companies need to port over games without driving up development costs....

Unless ps5 and new Xbox become hybrid consoles, Nintendo can thrive in being the most supported handheld in the market.

isnt there a handheld only switch due out soon, the switch has basically replaced the DS so it will still be around when the next generation of consoles hit.

@mandzilla: Sony doesn't give a shit about Japan. They're pretty much a western company now.

Hell, even Switch is performing overall better than expected in the west and worse than expected in Japan.

Of course not. Switch is considered part of the PS5/Xbox Two gen 9. No doubt the Switch will continue to pummel the PS Bore 5 when it releases.

Switch isn't going anywhere. Nintendo will just bring out a new system when they need to. The Switch is already super-hobbled when it comes to graphics and features and that still hasn't stopped people from buying it now. I don't see next gen making a difference. If Sony and MS jump on the hybrid market, that could change though.

The Switch is a Hand-Held/Portable.

Why would a Portable stop selling when the PS5 and XB2 release?

Hmm, I dunno. Maybe not as much as they used to, but they do still dedicate a lot of their games output to the Japanese audience I'd say.

Maybe this gen you're starting to see them pivot more towards the west, with the updated (bigger) controller and giving up on handhelds, at least for now anyway.

I couldn't careless. I already got what I want from the Switch and rather it comes to a stop whenever PS5/Xbox Scarlet releases, the Switch will have the exclusive games I already own and my PC will do the rest for my gaming needs.

Based on? Switch seems to be selling fine and has outpaced overall Wii sales hitting the 7 million mark in 97 weeks, compared to the Wii that it took 105 weeks. What could improve Switch sales? A possible redesign a long with a price cut could come this year. I don't expect a more powerful Switch coming, like how Super Metal Dave 64 dreams about in all his youtube videos. They have their investors meeting coming by the end of the month, so it will be interesting to see where they're heading with the Switch.

I'm talking about compared to 3DS. Wii dropped off a cliff in Japan pretty early on. I'm not saying that it's performing badly at all; expectations were just a little higher. Many initially expected it to pass PS4 last year.

Last year, or fiscal year? I expected the Switch to surpass the PS4 in its 2nd year (From March to now) and it's projecting right so far. Remember, 3DS had a slow start in the first year before the price drop and software drought until 2011. Nintendo responded with a huge price cut from $250 to $170, also titles likes Animal Crossing: New Leaf, and Monster Hunter Tri G bolstered sales. I don't see that with the Switch. I think the Switch can have a shot making at least above 15 million as long as they continue bringing out software. Japan is still in love with Pokemon and a gen 8 title will fair better than Let's Go.

3DS's start in Japan wasn't really that slow at all. For the record, 3DS was at nearly 10 million at this point in its lifespan launch-aligned, and that's without a Pokemon RPG or Smash. And 15 million would be really bad for both Nintendo and the Japanese market in general since 3DS is around 24 million.

The bigger issue though is that Switch was nearly flat YoY last year and is only up about 5% YoY for the fiscal year in Japan when they want to be up 33% WW for the fiscal year. It's a big reason for all of the analyst doom and gloom.

Okay you got me, I didn't actually realise a lot of the Japanese games on PS4 were third-party.

Last year, Switch suffered from droughts due to certain parts that weren't available, (NAND Flash), as for YoY, remember, 3DS has a longer lifespan. Do you think the Switch will be supported 7 years from now?

Nintendo consoles usually suffer from gaming droughts, especially in the 4th-5th year that is what usually causes them to die prematurely.

If Nintendo can release a steady stream of must have games every year, it will sell, otherwise it will very much lose all momentum in the next couple of years.

Nothing survives next gen hype and by this years E3 it'll in full swing.

Switch doesn't get the AAA games from third parties now because it can't run them and once third party moves over to next gen Switch won't get a lot if anything and will have to reply solely on Nintendo.

Would people buy a Switch or save that money up for a next gen machine with pretty next gen graphics?

@FireEmblem_Man: You mean the year before last, and that only excuses around half a million. And are you trying to predict the future and using that as an excuse? Really? Are you also with the trolls here that support and sales will die in 2021 then?

Also, what does the lifespan have to do with the YoY growth? It's less than Nintendo expected, by a fuckton.

I want to know what you're talking about and what the relevance of the question about support is. Also, your 15 million prediction requires Switch to fall off a cliff; it should break 15 million in Japan by the end of next year easily unless something goes horribly wrong.

BTW, it's 2019 now. The NAND supply issue you're talking about was in 2017.

My 15 million is a guess as if Nintendo will continue after 5 years in the market, per trend of a 5 yr cycle before releasing a new console. The 3DS hit 24 million after 7 years in the market. My 15 million is nothing but a safe bet, as a console, will surpass the Wii in LTD, but as a handheld we shall see and it all depends if Nintendo release a new redesign this year with a price cut that will help longevity. A trend they did since the orginal Gameboy.

yea... thought so.

It will continue to get the lighter games.

Nintendo already said that they want to support it longer than that, and either way 15 million is still waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too low. It should be over 11 million by the end of the year with the currently known lineup and a potential new model; 20 million would make more sense as a safe bet unless you believe that 2018 is Switch's peak year. But you're still missing the point. Nintendo wants to ship 20 million units worldwide this FY, up from 15 million last FY. That's a 33% increase. Switch is only up 4% YoY for the current FY in Japan. That's definitely below expectations (especially since Switch was sold out through all of 2017 in Japan), which means that Switch is leaning heavily on the west right now. It's doing well in Japan of course, but Japan is also the sole reason Nintendo will most likely miss their target.

Why not Nintendo make just switch as phone case with app to sell all their game? Have case shaped like phone case with switch like control and hdmi output, charge $50 dollar for controller case/dock, make profit here, and then sell game through app from cell phone? Then install base is much higher than 20 million switch. Controller case has storage card space or built in. Nintendo make extra money from dock to tv or pro controller. Even game still can be sold like card if it fit in phone case controller.

What high end games is it getting this gen?

yea... thought so.

It will continue to get the lighter games.

You literally proved my point...... And the lighter games will stop as by that point even the base requirements for those will be too high for Switch.

Switch is basically PS3/360 level but with a much more modern architecture and by the time PS5 comes out it'll be 2 generations behind in terms of performance.

No one, apart from Nintendo is regularly going to make games for hardware that is that technically behind everything else.
