If rumors are true and its as powerful as they say. Then its going to be an insane console. A modern marvel.
I still dont believe Nintendo would make it that much stronger than the 3DS, but they might can, who knows.
It's too early to tell, it all depends on the games. The hybrid idea is fantastic and it looks good so far, but it needs the software to be able to back it up.
Well, it's a console you can take on the go if you'd like. I will get the Switch, but I won't be using the portability hardly at all as much as I prefer to use my tower speaker surround sound and much larger, higher resolution HDTV screens.
The market for handhelds is smaller due to the phonie market, but this is a home console with a portability feature so at least Nintendo can focus more efforts on one console instead of dividing their efforts as they did in the past.
The dated 3DS released in 2011 and the Wii U released in 2012, and the Switch is releasing in 2017.
Hell no. A good enough device that gets some games I want to play? Sure, but it'll be just like the WiiU and Wii in terms of games library (not success, because they sure as **** aren't pulling a Wii again) as it'll be months upon months of that system barely getting anything worthwhile to play.
IMO, it's success is going to ride on a two main things, will Nintendo be able to create any first party killer apps for it, and also whether Japanese third parties will support it or move further into the smartphone / tablet gaming market. I think overall it'll be successful, one gaming device for Nintendo to focus on instead of two. Now Japanese third parties need not concern themselves with Sony with them leaving the handheld market, so hopefully even a bigger avalanche of quality titles heading to the Switch.
With western third parties, I don't expect much support other than seeing a repeat of the Wii / Wii U. They'll release the same multiplats that XB1 and PS4 get, and people won't buy them on Switch. and after that western third parties will stop trying.
I think it'll be better than the other consoles, but that's not a high bar.
My hope is it'll provide at least 10 high quality games worth playing.
@joebones5000: You dont have to use the Gamepad though. You can switch it out, get it?
And for the most part we didn't have to use the gamepad on the WiiU. We could have bought a pro controller for our WiiUs, which I most certainly did. Point still remains that Nintendo acknowledged that the WiiU gamepad was the big weakness with the console, then it creates another console which is basically just another gamepad. Makes no sense. Nintendo deserves the loss it will bring this time, whereas the WiiU was a great try and deserved to be more successful than it was.
You dont have to use gamepad or buy pro controller.
Nintendo stated Wii U struggled because it didnt set itself apart from the Wii enough. It confused the consumers with the Gamepad since it was named Wii U. People thought it was a Wii controller, they didnt know it was a new console.
If by "great system" you mean a system that I will have a lot of fun with, then yes, I think The Switch will be a great system. Nintendo always delivers great games for their consoles and now that they don't have to split their resources anymore, we should receive an even greater quantity of great games.
i think its going to have a great selection of games over its life. its going to have nintendos undivided attention and support from japan is going to be ace. think the combined library of the 3DS and wiiu or wii and DS. thats a dam fine selection of games.
my only concern is will it have more support from the west? its really up to nintendo to get western devs on board with exclusive deals. multiplats will be DOA on the platform and basically no publisher in the west is going to put games on it on their own volition (especially in the AAA arena). if nintendo can make deals with AA developers in the west though it could lead to some great ideas and brilliant games. for AA developers the level of horsepower is fine and dandy and its not some completely alien console in terms of tech. development costs will also be significantly lower which is another bonus. they do need a better western appeal.
the idea of the device will sell little hardware unless they manage some amazing way to use it. to be honest though i think this is all about nintendo focusing its software effrots. they know that the device will sell based on the strength and appeal of its library alone.
needless to say the strength of its launch line up will be absolutely vital in gaining momentum. its not going to be the most powerful or the best bang per buck in any simple metric so it needs to have strong content from day one.
If it can sustain 3rd party support then it should be great, without that its just a more refined WiiU.
It's gonna fail, maybe not as hard as the Wii U but it will probably be the last time we see Nintendo in the console race. They already botched that shit teasing Skyrim would be on it and behold Bethesda comes out and says nothing is final yet.
@joebones5000: Looks like an evolved Gamecube controller to me, i cant wait. Looks like SNES and Gamecube had a baby, mauhahahaha!
Too early to tell.
Nintendo will deliver their usual effort, so it's not like it's going to be devoid of quality content. Most I can hope for is they slip in lesser known franchises between the big hitters, as well as strong VC support.
As for Third Party, one confirmed game I'm looking forward to. And my favorite developer is reportedly on board, so there's that to look forward to. The waiting game is on.
@mmmwksil: One of my favorite developers got added who is From Software. Im hoping we get an Armored Core. Switch should be lots of fun.
Mario, Zelda..etc? Yeah it'll sure be the least fun to play system since the Tiger LCD handhelds. If their games are fun to play and they can get them out in a timely manner unlike the Wii U then it'll never be a bad system.
I need more information.
Ultimately, no other console maker has the potential to put out as many AAAEEEEIEIEO titles - and that was when they were splitting their resources into two markets. How good the switch becomes will depend on them continuing to create must-have best-of-the-best experiences, as well as how good the battery life of the system is.
To be a bit fair. the gamepad isn't a game pad. The two look similar but function completely different. You don't use the screen for input while playing it as a console, it looks like a traditional system where you can more easily take it on the go. Granted I think this is a niche feature as its aiming for a small subset of people addicted to nintendo games that can't go to a party without taking mario with them...
I've always been a very vocal critic and pessimistic towards Nintendo for years, but I've a good feeling about the Switch for some reason and am trying to approach this with a positive mindset. I'm hopeful this will work out, partly due to structural changes Nintendo's been undergoing, but perhaps more so because if this flops it may fundamentally alter how Nintendo makes games....or if they continue to make them at all.
Whether or not anyone likes it or not, it's going to kill it. Not to mention the fact it's going to have a couple hundred exclusives and third party support.
A rumored 4gb of ram is more than enough to make a devastatingly awesome handheld /console hybrid. In my opinion The vita is on par with the ps4 experience... And modern AAA developers are making games no different today than they were 10 years ago, so I can't really be suckered into believing by not having the extra horsepower we are losing something. It's the portability I want. Even if I got to play small indie developers and the occasional larger game I'd be happy.
@TheEroica: Yeah, and this would be like 6 times more ram than Vita. 31 times 3DS. Its a pretty big leap for Nintendo.
@thereal25: It happens all the time, they playing Animal Crossing. They part of the famous Nintendo Girls Club.

yeah, its a fail again because the switch pro controller will be sold separately just like the wii u pro controller
I'm banking on it mirroring the success of the Wii-U.
In other words, I think it'll be a total bust where it'll have a solid lineup of exclusives, but pitiful third-party support. And since I do not care to play video games on the go, the portable aspect is utterly useless personally.
