Note: This is not about what ANY systems failure rate is or is not. This isn't even about any of the systems. This is about whether or not an agreement to fix catastrophic console failures makes it OK for the console to undergo a catastrophic failure.

Does a warranty make console failure OK or is the time/energy etc that you have to put in make it still a problem? If it takes a month to get it fixed, does the inconvenience add up or is it OK regardless because there is a warranty?

PS: PLEASE do not make this about what the failure rate is or is not of any console.

Nope, because manufacturers have the basic responsibilities towards a consumer. I admir MS for doing the 3 year extended warranty, but it doesn't make up for the initial batch of Xbox 360s :D

Of course not. However, iff other positive aspects fo the product are so strong that they overshadow the one major fault.... and if a warranty can soften the blow of that fault, then it certainly tips the balance in favor of the product in general.

If anything, it shows that the company acknowledges the problem and is willing to set things right.

Then don't post it in System Wars, take it to Audio/Video Hardware Discussion or platform specific forums, or even Off-Topic. Otherwise we don't get to see silly fanboys arguing.

And no, a warranty does not make it OK for a system to be faulty.

When I initially sent my 360 out the first time, about three months after launch, it took me 9 weeks to get my console back. I just say screw it now and get the Best Buy replacement plans since they're only an extra 30 dollars and you get a new machine. I know bringing up Best Buy on this forum is a no no and I will indeed get nothing but flamed. But if my console fails, I've been through four, I like to go into the store and get my new machine that day.

Offering a warranty doesn't excuse a company for releasing a faulty product. It does, however, show that the company has acknowledged they have released a fauly product and that they are making an attempt to fix the problem (i.e. Falcon and Jasper models).

The warranty for MS is essentially useless to me. If they actually fixed the problem under warranty that would be good, but since there is no fix to the 360s problems. It basically makes the warranty pointless.

Warrantys are fine for the off chance that a system "may" fail as every product has a chance of failing (it's unaviodable), however they are not fine so you can release a broken product so that it can be used to fixed said broken product "when" it fails (ala 360). As someone already posted, i would rather have a quality built product with a lower warranty than a faulty broken product with a longer one.

Honestly, I think it's a loaded question.

Nothing makes a hardware failure excusable.

The better question would be... why does the 360 continue to sell so well IN SPITE OF the hardware failures?

Definitely dont' admire them. Your right, they didn't do it out of the goodness of their hearts. Infact if you remember MS actually lied about the defects saying they were "within industry norms," they also were criticized about deleted forum posts, etc... It was actually the gaming community that started doing polls, surveys, etc... Only once the problem was discovered to be really big and under the threat of lawsuits did MS put in place the warranty

It makes the system failure easier to swallow, But it is still no excuse for the faulty hardware that caused the system failure in the first place.

It certainly takes away alot of the suck when your console breaks down. Having a good warranty also puts you at ease. I remember with my third PS2, I'd practically say a little prayer everytime I turned it on, as I was always fearful of going through the hell of SCE Customer Support and paying for the whole damned process.

Quite a ridiculous statement indeed. I cannot fathom why anyone would by a faulty system over a reliable one due to the fact that it can be replaced at your expense of your convenience for up to 3 years.

Thought so, see your facts are wrong (i'm guessing your a blind fanboy or someone who only got a 360 after the 3 year warranty was introduced), MS did not admit to or own up to there mistakes, they were forced to and that's a very big difference. At the start of the RROD stuff MS denied everything (and how many times did we hear "it's fixed now" after they finnaly were forced to admit it), it wasn't until the threat of law suits and a mass outcry from consumers that they then upped the warranty to cover there backsides. You say to me "good luck when your PS3 fails", i say i had 4 360s RROD (2 pro and 2 elite) on me and that's why i no longer have one (and believe me MS customer support is no better than sonys), sure i got them all replaced via warranty BUT i decided i would rather go with a lower warranty and have a better built product.

Good luck if your 360 fails and you don't get the RROD display, my friends GPU went out and that's not covered under the 3 year warranty. He had to pay MS. Remember the 3 years is for only one issue on the 360 and doesn't cover all the problems people have.

The PS3 is 90%+ reliable compared to 46% reliable with the 360. I think MS gave the 3 year warranty to avoid being sued. Sony offered to fix my internet port for free although it was past the warranty and I broke it.

This is what is lost in the conversation.....it makes no difference about a warranty because unless the warranty protects it the entire generation (which MS claims it's going to be 8-10 years), then why would you think it's ok for it to break so easily? That means you have to buy possibly 3 X360's over the course of it's lifespan. To me that is unacceptable. Everyone keeps saying "hey I just get it replaced when it breaks with the warranty".....all warranties eventually end. I'm not saying you will always get a flawless console if you buy the PS3 or Wii.....but lets get serious, you won't have near the problems that the X360 faces.

No.

Failure hardware should be recalled and re-designed.

Thinking that a warranty is enough to fix the problem is an offense to consumers.

I think it fixes the problem. Previous generations have been only 4-5 years. A three year warranty is 75-60 percent that time. :D

i believe it continues with the original. so you get 3 years, then you get to buy a new one or fix it yourself
