Do you feel that Kojima deserves the repsect he gets?

TREAL_Since

I think he will have deserved it when he has done what those men have-pushed their genres onward and upward rather than purely upward. Did you know that Legacy of Kain was the first RPG without text? Have you ever experienced a story in an FPS that even comes close to the narrative level of that of Deus Ex?

Until these men receive respect equal to that of Kojima, I will say that he is overrated.

I believe that for what those designers have done, they sure as hell deserve more notoriety. You shouln't down someone else's acheivements and poplularity because others haven't quite reached that level of stardom. Don't blame Kojima, blame gamers. Kojima deserves what credit is given to him.

Kojima has pushed a genre "onward and upward" by creating the stealth-action genre with Metal Gear during the NES days. Then revolutionized it with Metal Gear Solid as far as story-telling: Hollywood-esque narrative and serious character depth for the genre he helped usher into the industry.

Do you love Kojima mainly because you believe that he ushered in an era of excellent narratives and deep characters?

If so, you are horribly, horribly mistaken. Baldur's Gate, Final Fantasies 1-7, and Fallouts 1-2 came before it and had better and better presented stories and better developed characters-stories that make you feel as though, as fantastic as they may be, they are real-characters that feel as though they are true people. That sense, I am afraid, is not really captured in the Metal Gear Solid games; you said yourself that he utilizes "Hollywood-esque narrative"-a narrative form that is often criticized for feeling superlatively contrived and unrealistic-a narrative form that creates two-dimensional, or even one-dimensional, characters-characters that often feel, once again, contrived and unrealistic.

In addition, games are, by definition, not films; they, much like music needs a different form of narrative than that of literature, have different needs in regards to storytelling. This is touched upon in games like System Shock 2, Half-Life 1-2, and Bioshock; though their stories are not necessarily the greatest, they create atmospheres, through purely first-person narrative and environmental subtleties, that cannot be duplicated in any other medium.

There is much to love Kojima for, but advancing the means of narrating a story is, without doubt, not one of them; he has, indeed, taken steps backwards in this field.

The MGS series has always seemed pretty crap to me. Maybe I am just of a different sub-species of human, but I've never been able to grasp why people are always praising MGS.

oh, god its the guy with bearded man on his signature. No Kojima is a prefectionist, hard work should be praised.ff7isnumbaone

Colmusterd... the one and only...

Again, I like Kojimas work as he is very dedicated, but I wouldn't call the MGS series (which I've played all of other than the obvious MGS4) the greatest games ever... MGS1 was the most inventive, most fun to play in my opinion. I liked MGS2, although it became a bit much in the story department and MGS3 was eh, ok, above average....

He's pretty much one of the first devs to craft a story that was relevant to today's society. Plus, it helps that it is a really good story as well.

Go youtube the MGS3 secret theater.

Many people wouldn't joke around their own videogame like that. In fact, I yet have to see another one mocking it like that.

Zone of the Enders , I think. I've only played his MG and MGS games though.

Lunar Knights for the DS...great game. I agree that Kojima recieves too much praise on here.

Kojima is awesome, there's no questioning it in my opinion. His work in the stealth-action genre is fantastic, and he has many fan favourite titles under his belt.

But do I think he's under or over praised? No. Many praise him too much, many praise him too little... It all balances out.

I'm between your opinion OP, and the "God" opinion.

I find that he makes great games; some of my favorites of all time, but there are certain parts that he doesn't focus on that get to me (gameplay).

He's more about telling a story.

Never played one of his games, so I will withhold judgement until I eventually get my hands on a B/C PS3.

I just picked up MGS2 the other day for 5 bucks and am rather glad I did. I had not played a metal gear game sence the old Nes days and with all the hype for #4 I decided to give it a go. I am not all that far into the game but I can say for sure that it has to draw its greatness from its story becuase the gameplay is so hard to get used to. If I had to rate the game right now it would get a B but would never pay more than 10 bucks for it.

As for the question, he is over rated, but still really really good at what he does. I cannot see why some praise him as much as they do, but i also cannot see why some bash him.

Overrated. The MGS series is good, but I find many more people to be better developers. His dialogue is lame and melodramatic, and MGS2 proved that people will eat up a story no matter how stupid and convoluted it is.

He has one of the most creative and innovative minds when it comes to story telling that fascinates me. He is what Miyamoto is to gameplay and Uematsu is to Music creation.

I think Kojima is a very important game creator. MGS was the first truly cinematic game and I think people will realise the significance of that over time. MGS is still playable now as well which is pretty suprising because the vast majority of 32/64 bit games have aged terribly.
