Maybe grown out is the wrong word.

I've played a lot of games - check my blog if you want to see a list I've made - and there are certain game series that I just don't get anything from anymore. I used to love them, but now the luster is gone, and when the new instalment in the franchise comes out I find myself disinterested.

Mario, Ratchet and Clank, Devil May Cry, Zelda, Metroid... I just don't care anymore.

Recently I borrowed Mario Galaxy from my Brother, because everyone is fussing so much about it. I'm about 52 stars in, just learned how to fly, and I'm still just not that impressed. I don't think I can say it's a bad game, it just feels like something I've already done. I go through most levels without even losing a hit point; which makes the daredevil comets kind of humorous.

Anyway, does anyone else feel this way?

For me it's RPGs. I just cant' get into them anymore. And somewhat RTS games, but I still love them...I just have a hard time remaining competitive with them. The older I get the more I enjoy FPS as I can just pick up and play and quit whenever. RTS takes a bit more dedication.

And yes SMG was way to easy and simple.

Devil May Cry ehh why the hell did I buy part 4, Metrioid and possibly Mario if there was a real next gen Metroid with next gen graphics I would've probably took it off the list

I've actually been the same way with RPGs. I stopped playing them for something like three years. I discovered recently if I actually have about 3 hours to sit down and play, I can get into one - but who has that kind of time lying around all the time?

Link, Metroid and Mario. The transition of 2d to 3d killed it for me. Blasphemy, I know, but I've just not been able to enjoy any of their 3d counterparts (excluding Mario 64 and OoT, to an extent).

No, that hasen't really happened to me. I still love the banjo kazooie series and many other "kiddy" n64 titles.

However, I had the same kind of experience with Mario Galaxy. It was just an ok game to me, even though some people love it.

I actually think that Metroid Prime was the first "FPS" that I played the whole way through on single player. Before that did a lot of multiplayer, but no single player campaign could hold my interest for too long. After that I found a few others that I liked decently and when Metroid Prime 2 came out I was a little annoyed that you couldn't strafe unless you were holding the game's hand and using the lock-on. Couldn't get into it as a result.

Yeah, I feel like I can no longer enjoy jRPGs because the last few I've played I couldn't stand. It could just be they were horrible, although many reviews say otherwise. Anyhow, I used to love this genre and have seemingly "grew out of it."

Mario Galaxy is very atmospheric - and if you love a cutsey candyland where all the bushes and stars have happy eyes, I can see how you would love that game. For the gameplay itself though, I really can't understand the hype.

I am having some problem with the horror game this gen (and last gen to some extend)... I dunno, I was really scared with Clive Barker: undying and system shock 2. But now everything seems so bland. Yathzee illustrate that in his Dead space review. Game designer should try to take the japenese horror film as an inspiration.

Heh, I was playing the F.E.A.R. 2 demo on my PS3. I thought the "scary" parts were cool looking, but it failed to even creep me out in the slightest. I wonder if Fatal Frame 4 is coming out in the US...

Boy, did I use to love puzzle games! Wait, no I didn't... Anywho, I have grown-out of not a genre, rather, a type of play: online. Recently actually. I no longer have a thrill in playing against faceless strangers. Split-screen, system link, local co-op, I can do all that. I played the funnest match of multiplayer I ever had at my friends house, playing local 007: Nightfire on his GameCube. I had way more fun with three other friends than against sixteen strangers. Its not like that in all things, like sports (namely hockey), where playing strangers isn't a problem, but in games... I just can't get into online anymore.

Yeah I think I've grown out of the criminal simulator type games like Saints Row 2. The whole "being hard" thing is becoming very juvenile to me.

Heh, now I want to play Oregon trail. In Oregon Trail 2, you could pick different western destinations, like California, and you had different stats and abilities such as what languages you knew or what skills you had.

I think it's the faceless part that bothers me. I NEVER got into playing with strangers online. I like playing with my friends or against my friend, but I can't spend too much time just sitting in a fragfest. However, that doesn't seem to apply to Warcraft 3 for some reason... I play those custom maps anonymously all the time.. Except DOTA.

Cutesy candyland? Really? How long did you even play the game? Some of the fire levels tend to represent hell quite well. And the gameplay is simple but very well fine tuned and it fits Mario perfectly. I can't get it through my head as to how people want Mario to be a Lord of the Rings type thing with serious dialouge and epic story with gameplay that resembles Assassin's Creed or something, and the main character is a fat italian dude with an oversized nose and moustache.

You're kidding right? Although I guess this is a stupid argument since no one knows what "hell" looks like. But anyway, even on the Bowser levels you still have litte fireballs and bullets with eyes.

I don't expect that much of Mario. Which is part of the reason I just don't look forward to his games anymore.

I love pokemon, but I've never liked the single player campaigns. Recently I discovered Shoddy Battle, and that represents everything I like about it just fine.

Not so much grown out of, but series I played enough in the past (prior to this generation) to just not care about anymore include Mario Kart and Smash Bros. Considering how great Mario 64 was, the disappointment of Sunshine left a bit of a permenant bad taste in my mouth, but I doubt Galaxy is as good as 64 anyway, though I do still want to play it. Otherwise, I still play most things.

Edit: Oh yeah, Pokemon! After Red/Blue, I didn't know any of the Pokemon, so I didn't enjoy any after.

You won't bedisappointed. After plying SMG it made up for over 10 years without a good mario game, that is your standard mario game.

Zelda, for one. After so many games, the gameplay has gotten kind of tired. Two, FPS. They all seem the same to me, just with a different coat of paint. That isn't to say they aren't quality, but just pretty much the same.

Yes, I know I'm probably going to get flamed for saying that.

You are 52 stars in, which may or may not be a lie, and thats still not full completion at least of the main story, which can't justify an opinion of the game. Hell, in the Bible, is described as Godless pit of fire. However, I won't argue graphic content, that would be childish, like saying Gears of War is awesome because of extremely gory content and ripping underground monsters up with chainsaws. And if new gameplay and enviorments aren't enough to reason more purchases of the Mario games, fine (although you could try the Mario RPGs, with a bit more story and maturity), but Mario is meant to be kind of relaxing, simple platformer, best played in small doses at a time. That is truly when SMG is best experienced.

"You are 52 stars in, which may or may not be a lie, and thats still not full completion at least of the main story, which can't justify an opinion of the game."

Hence the words, "I'm not impressed with it so far"

You can believe me when I say that I'm 52 stars in. If you want, I can talk about things that are in the game. (Spoilers) I really thought they should have come up with a new boss for the final grand star, instead of just reusing that squid boss. I did think the whole pushing the worm through the apples was kind of clever. And one fo the feed-the-star-until-it-explodes-into-a-galaxy was a giant fish that made me think I was playing Cosmic Osmo

Hell, in the Bible, is described as Godless pit of fire. tktomo01

Give me a passage, one that isn't in Isaiah. And regardless, that's a rather ambiguous description, don't you think?

However, I won't argue graphic content, that would be childish, like saying Gears of War is awesome because of extremely gory content and ripping underground monsters up with chainsaws. tktomo01

Did I mention graphic content? I said it was a candyland, not that it lacked graphic content. Ratchet and Clank doesn't have a spot of blood in it, but it doesn't take place in happy sunshine lollipop land.

And if new gameplay and enviorments aren't enough to reason more purchases of the Mario games, fine (although you could try the Mario RPGs, with a bit more story and maturity), but Mario is meant to be kind of relaxing, simple platformer, best played in small doses at a time. Right, I know what Mario is, and I just think I've had enough of it.

Edit: Wow, something got screwed up... That's odd, it keeps cutting off the first part of my post...

Edit(Again): There that at least gets the whole message accross.

Actually heh (starts sweating nervously), I can't get a passage, I just always remember my CCD teacher threatening us with stuff like that. By graphic content, I wasn't accusing you, I just meant fire and that type of thing, violence and all that, didn't use the word right apparently (though I never was the best in english). If you don't like Mario, OK, that is the point of this thread as you have mentioned on many occassions. I should apolagize for being so apt to argue, I just finished watching all the Lord of the Rings movies (in one day, I've been sick with nothing to do), and frankly I am quite shaken. You can't watch so many awesome movies at once without consequences, in my case, arguing on forums. I did read the OP all the way through, I'm having trouble remembering details with this flu... And finally, please don't say the Lord of the Rings movies were bad, you will make me break my brand new keyboard. Anyways, thanks for a mildly original post for once in SW

Heh, I like the LOTR movies, don't worry. I look forward to their bluray release and my chance to see them on a good HDTV.

If I hadn't played every single Mario game before, I might love Mario Galaxy. But then that's the point of this thread. I don't mean to put down your interests.

Here's a pretty good explaination of Hell if you're interested http://scriptures.lds.org/bd/h/32
I went to check my source before I said anything and I think that link does a better (more accurate) job explaining the biblical usage of the word than I could from my understanding.

Mostly online shooters , not that I don't like them, it's just that I can't devote enough time to it

I think "burnt out" would be better wording for what your saying and yes, I've done that quite a bit this gen. Its happened to me with almost everygame I've played in the last two years. The only games I've truly enjoyed 100% this gen would be Oblivion, AC4, UT3, NMH, megaman 9, and somewhat SC4, and even those games put a sour taste in my mouth from overplaying. The one game that has got me excited right now is RE5 and thats only cause of the demo. There are other games I want this year, but they don't really have that "WOW!" factor

yeah, not grown out. disinterested. I havent finished most of my games. like beat all the missions. like not finished the games. Someone told me once that made a lot of sense. The console gamers (me) have shorter games than the pc gamers because of this reason. Disinterested. And I think that may be true. I dont want it to be but dang.. Failure :(.

I'm burnt out right now on Music games, and VERY Japanese RPG's. Some I really like (AKA Lost Odyssey/The World Ends With You.), but some like Tales of Vesperia and Infinite Undiscovery I just can't finish. And while Star Oceans 4 looks good graphics wise, I don't think I'm going to get it anytime soon. Gotta get me some Halo Wars/FEAR 2/Ninja Blade/RE5/Chronicles of Riddick/Deadly Creatures.

I'm having a tough time with RTS games and that's not good when your primary platform is PC.

Jrpgs... Borderline. I want to believe I can enjoy them but most of the ones I've played and looking back at alot of them, they just feel like children's anime with cheesy dialogue, generic stories and character arch types, girly men... I mean, I realize generic stories and characters are apart of another genre I love, shooters, but shooters are actually fun. Jrpgs typically aren't that fun. Most people kinda play jrpgs for the story. And most of what are in Jrpgs have been played out time and time again in other jrpgs or freaking anime.

And I guess anything Nintendo since you kind of realize that by third game you've played of any of their series that they do not intend to make much any progress game play wise. Throw in a gimmick and they're happy.
