As much as I respected nintendo's move with the wii, I really don't think motion controls have done much for gaming. Wii sports actually showed promise, but to this day I think that free game was actually the pinnacle of the game library.

Kinect...erm.... yeah..... I guess the only good thing I have to say about it is that atleast its not a blatant rip off of the wii;

Which brings me onto the Move. Hmmm.... HD wii. Wiimote with a light bulb on the end. Looks a little bit like a sex toy.

So, other than getting fat kids to sweat, bringing gaming out of the dungeon (sorry basement) and into the living room so your nan can have a go and look silly, has it done anything good for gaming?

Personally I am not a fan. Motion controls suck.

Touch screens add an incredible amount of dimensions to gameplay.

So does well-implemented motion controls. See Skyward Sword.

Waggle / Kinect? Absolutely useless.

I love motion controls, but I also like tradition controls. So Im happy it seems Nintendo is allowing developers to go either way with the Wii U.

I enjoy them as long as they are not tacked on but built from the ground up for the game with the exception of Heavy Rain

I liked playing Heavy Rain with motion controllers more than with the regular controller if that counts.

I had high hopes for goldeneye on the wii. I thought it was going to be good with motion controls. I ended up using a game cube controller. RE4 was ok with motion - can't say its added anything though. Sports resort again, ok. Mario Kart again, ok. They just don't add anything and they never feel natural. I only have one game on the kinect (the kinect was present). I keep waiting and hoping that something good will come out. I actually considered the dance game for a while.

I hate how Wii makes you use them. If they had the option to connect a regular remote to EVERY game, i wouldnt mind.

But I dont have a Wii because most games make you use the move remote.

Can be decent, although I think should only be implemented for experiences that require them or will vastly benefit from them from a gameplay perspective. Not just some tacked on waggle or awkward controls.

kinect had potential. not to be a main device, but a really neat accessory. i feel it was wasted. the move is pretty much what you described: a sex toy-shaped HD wii... with no games. and the wii was my first system, so i think it's pretty obvious what's my opinion on it. it can be done wrong, and it leads to stupid games with motion shoved into it, or it can be done right and actually make the game better.

MOTION CONTROLS DO SUCK. I like the Wiis games but cannot stand having to use the motion controls for games like SMG. They just turn me off so much soo that i avoid games that will not let me use the classic controller. Theyll never be the same as a gamepad or mouse/keyboard. In my opnion they have no business with gaming

BTW whats your beef with dungeons [basements] bra? We gots to set up our entertainment/electronic systems [man caves] somewhere.

It depends on the game and how they are implemented. Last game I played with motion controls was Heavy Rain, and I felt the motion controls added to the experience.

Depends on how it's implemented. How Retro designed it in Metroid Prime Trilogy was a prime example (forgive the pun) of how it should be done, as it improved the gameplay by tenfold. Then there are games like Mad World where it's just annoying.

yup. when it works it shows amazing potential. both wii sports games gave us a glimpse of what it could do. the sword righting in resort especially was great fun. red steel 2 was also great (vastly underrated...it probably shouldnt have been called red steel). hopefully zelda SS will also finally show everyone that yes it can add to a game and do it very well. in a way im dissapointed that ninty didnt go for linear advancement for the wiiu and made a far more advanced motion controller (though i can see why they did it and am also looking forward to the wiiu controller). in many ways the wiimote was the nes pad of motion controls. tip of the iceberg stuff. if move ever gets some actual great content and not just basic lipservice from sony then id love to try that also...it looks great (well the controller looks a bit silly but under the hood it sounds excellent). kinect is also very interesting but, like the wii, there is a sense at the mo of devs trying to cram games into its design that isnt really suited (ref star wars...wrong platform for that). but yeah...i like motion controls. for the games i have played on my wii i have never felt like they got in the way. in some games there is a sense of motion controls adding nothing but i dont remember ever thinking "god...the motion controls really hurt this game". on the wiiu front....if F1 2012 comes to it one of the things im hoping is that CM will have motion control steering and also have all the buttons and dials you would find on an F1 wheel on the touch screen. that could be kewl. the motion sensor in the wiiu controller is WM+ standard or better as far as i know so it should be a vast improvement of mario kart wiis controls.

I have fun with Kinect. I don't care what anyone says. Kinect Adventures, Kinect Sports, Gunstringer, That Fruit game, and Kinectimals are all solid games....for what they are. I even had a blast renting Joyride.

I love the pointer controls on Wii, I honestly think it's thee best addition to control on consoles this generation, but motion controls have for the most part being very disappoing and right now just aren't very accurate, responsive and are simply good enough.

I really enjoy motion controls, as long as they are done well. There have been a few games I have played that you could tell the developer could care less about really trying with the motion controls. And then there are games like metroid prime 3, and super mario galaxy that show how much motion controls can really add to a game.

Hell, I am a much better fps shooter with motion controls rather than the traditional control scheme

Yes I do (Wii, PSmove). I'm not really found of moving my hole body just to play a video game. That said, I've seen only a handfull of games that have actally gotten the motion controls to feel 'right', like they belong.

If done right, motion controls can be pretty awesome. I like games that offer a lot of different controller input options, like traditional game pad, motion controls, keyboard and mouse etc.

Yes as long as they're implemented right. Red Steel 2 is an example of GREAT Motion Control use in a FPS/Swordfighting game. Motion is basically the best control scheme yet for FPS. Traditional Controls are fine for Adventure, Standard Fighting and a few other genres, but for the FPS genre and Sports, nothing beats Motion Controls if done correctly.

When done right, motion controls can be really awesome. Red Steel 2, ExciteBots, Zack & Wiki, and No More Heroes are examples of using using motion controls extremely well. (And look, only one of those is a Nintendo game.) They can really add to gameplay and feeling immersed in a game when done correctly.

But yes, there was a learning curve for developers this generation. And motion controls aren't great for everything. The DS in particular has shown that it's good to have options -- some games control better with D-pad and buttons, others with the touch screen. A lot of games make good use of both (Pokemon Black). The Wii U should be interesting in that you'll likely have the option of using motion controls or not.

I agree. The Wiimote has been played out, a lot of people aren't paying any attention to Move, & as far as Kinect goes, the hype for it has fizzled out, & sales for it are starting to slow down to a crawl. In another year or two from today, nobody's going to care about it anymore.

Motion controls = Gimmicks.

I just don't care for motion controls at all. While it has brought in a new accessibility for sports and party games, it hasn't really innovated the interface for core gaming. It's big selling point was a new level of immersion and in paper that might sound true but aside from the more natural approach to sports games, it seems to have been more a barrier.

The way I see it, true immersion comes from the mind, not the body. The idea is to make the control invisible, yet the physical activity seems to make it more obvious. When I read a book, I don't need to pretend to flail a sword or wear a kevlar vest to form that mental connection with the protagonist of the story. I am perfectly able to absorb myself into the scenario all while sitting down and being perfectly still, the immersion being feuled just by my imagination.

Similarily, years before motion controls game developers were able to implement compelling visual and cinematic experiences, enhanced with presentation and fluid gamepad interfaces where we barely noticed what our fingers were doing, to create the immersion. Just like with books and movies, we were immersed in our minds where we forgot where we were and could be absorbed in that fantastical world that was imagined for us.

Well in games like Galaxy and Strickers, waggle can be intuitive, when it's only one solid swing.

Yes. When they are well done, they are incredibly innovative and immersive. And even sometimes when they aren't well done (Cursed Mountain) they can be very enjoyable. In some genres, they are the next step for input control. They just won't be realized on current console technology.

When it's very well implemented into a game, it's highly enjoyable. For instance, No More Heroes made excellent use of the Wii controls while also not overdoing it. Plus, without the Wiimote, a great game like Red steel 2 would not be possible. However, when the controls are just thrown in, I dislike it.

88 mil for N, kinda of a hard comparison since N started out with motion and the others didn't. Good selling wii titles have been mario cart, play, sports resort more casual titles and not for everyone.

I don't really care about it one way or the other. I haven't played a game using motion controls in about a year, and I can't say I've missed it, but I wouldn't object to playing a game just because it has motion controls.

I've not really used motion controls that have fealt 100% natural. My awareness of the method of control (and it some case battling the controller to make it do what I want) brings me out of that immersion.

The kinect really baffles me as I just don't know what they are going to be able to do with it. Its very good at mapping body movements but limited to a couple of square meters. So yeah, that is great for say a dance game, fitness game or some fairly static sports. But how are meant to move around a game world?
